Norwood vs West Adelaide u18 game tomorrow looks like it will be worth watching with Valente, Saviour, Coles, Charlton. Gerloff named in both u18/ressies.

Cameron Buchanan from Glenelg have you got much on him or Jordy Aitchison from Sturt ( I think he is injured at the moment) ??

Hi Chris25 , a few phantom drafters have a big question mark on Stephenson's kicking, as you have him at number 1 you don't see it as a big deficiency?

How would you compare his kicking to another who had a perceived weakness in this area last year ie. Sam Powell-Pepper?

Chris Fagan puts a lot of importance on having very good to elite disposal skills.

Maybe worth watching from a Norwood perspective, not so much West Adelaide. The Bloods don't really have much in terms of the draft.

I don't mind Buchanan, largely a defender but only about 188cm. Clean and does most things well, thought he could have been a chance at the Champs but lost out to Carroll and Coles. Doesn't really have the size or attacking game to get drafted yet I wouldn't have thought.

ok, I see what you're on about with Stephenson :thumbsu:

I was never going to move him from #1, a game like that makes it easier to justify.

I don't think I've ever seen worse kicking than at that this Championships. Every team seems to struggle to hit a target from 20m away, or at times they can't even get the ball in the air. So it's not just a weakness of Stephenson.

Overall, I'm not too bothered. SPP has shown what AFL coaching can do, he's certainly improved since last year. And for a bad kick, Nat Fyfe goes alright.

I'd say Stephenson is an average kick, not bad but not great. But everything else he does is great, which means you accept some of the bad. Having said that though, he did kick 5 goals straight...

Hi Chris,

I see you still have Fogarty rated very highly...I was expectant and left underwhelmed and would be concerned if freo drafted him - your not overy concerned? I liked what WA produced at the Champs and think there are some bargains to be had from that squad. Must admit I too loved watching Rankine play, but would have Ian Hill ahead of him (probably WA bias) but I hope we can somehow snare Lukosious (not sure of spelling)....2018 already shaping as a super draft. Just one final comment/query, I enjoyed watching Giro and was wondering if he could make it as an attacking back pocket or is he too loose defensively?

I wouldn't be hugely concerned if Fremantle took Fogarty, I'm just not sure he's the best fit for us at the moment. Up forward, we're missing that #1 guy - as good as I think Fogarty will be, he'd just be added to the mix with McCarthy, Kersten and Cox. It's one of the reasons I'm not too fussed with whether we chase Mitch McGovern or not, I don't think he'd add a great deal for what he would cost. While we could definitely use someone in the midfield with his size, I'm not drafting Fogarty as a genuine midfielder yet. So I'd be happy to have him, but he wouldn't be a real needs based selection.

As for Giro, I haven't really seen enough of him defensively to say whether he could do it. It's not really a role he's had to play, he's purely an attacking ball magnet at SANFL level. Brad McCarthy is the one I like as a small defender, should get All Australian honours in my opinion. He has the run and strength to match any small forward, and a nice boot on him too.

Tends to be the only thing I get right I think. I was high on Stengle, LeBois and Kirby last year and all three are tracking well. I don't think it's a coincidence that Richmond are finally looking good now that they have speed in the forward half, that's been the biggest change for me. If I was a recruiter, I'd focus on the small forward position more than some seem to.

Unfortunately, there's very little I'm interested in this year. Taryce Stewart has potential as a 19 year old, playing well in the WAFL seniors but didn't feature much for WA at the Championships. And Ian Milera is having an excellent year in the SANFL. Otherwise I like James Bell from the Allies, more as a utility flanker type. Kieran Parnell is a serious talent from the NT, but has been injured for much of the past two years. So maybe he'll be a chance in the future.

2018 already has me more excited.

Good get having Zac Bailey in your Top 20 before today Chris.

Really liked his game. Quality possessions. Quality clearances.

I'll make 2 observations i had. I thought i was watching Andy McGrath last year watching Bailey today. Very similar looks, traits and style. Fast feet with a bit of power. Also, clear headed.

Also while a different player of course, the way Bailey took the bit between the teeth and took on and beat a group of higher rated mids reminded me of the way Patty Cripps and Dom Sheed also did a similar thing in a big game at their Carnivals.

Sorry Chris, when the similar player used for fogarty is Jake Stringer that should be a no go for me. Brander is clearly the one to me to fill the role up forward. Looks like a footballer. A bit like Sean Darcy looks like a footballer, and not an athlete pretending to be a footballer ( zac clarke comes to mind)

Both Fogarty and Brander are clearly footballers first - you don't need to be scared there. Yes Fogarty is slightly smaller, but he is also more agile, can side step multiple players (and then bash his way through), good on a lead, good field and goal kicking, can play play in defence and provide drive from the back half (things that we are not so great at ATM). He hasn't been great through the midfield or had a super U18s but he is a talent no doubt.

I also wouldn't set your heart on a key forward - our list management has been shown to be complicated and doesn't seem to favour taking talls really early, particularly if they are not really tall or exceedingly good and values them more later in the draft. As Chris has pointed out, Stephenson is really good and unique as a forward or wing, and Lochie O'Brien is super agile and super dangerous by boot. I would be happy with any of the players that I have as Top 8 at pick 5.

Zac Bailey has always impressed me, so it was good to see him perform on an even bigger stage. He's one of those players who just looks like a footballer. Might not be the biggest or fastest, but knows what to do on the field. I don't think he goes as early as I have him, but whoever gets him will be happy they did.

As you said, Fogarty is agile. But with his knee causing him issues, it looked to be his agility that was hampered most. So more often enough than not, he had to resort to using pure strength to try to barge through the opposition. Which didn't always work.

Stephenson reminds me a bit of Rob Murphy playing fwd.

He does tend to create time and space, and you know the play will end well if Stephenson has it in his hands.

Looks like we will be surging up the ladder in the wrong year ie. 2018;). The Magpies will probably get the choice of Rankine or Lukosius.

I've only had a chance to watch the single Allies v V Metro game, some thoughts of mine......
Zac Bailey was a real stand out for me - something about his clean hands and ability to burst through or hit the pack at speed reminded me in some ways of Dangerfield. Not saying he'll ever reach those heights or have such a rounded game - just something about his 'hustle' that made me wish we had an early second rounder .

I wasn't particularly sold on Brander - I do find it hard to pick taller talent though, I just look for quality of hands, body positioning in the air and timing of leap. He has it but nothing screamed absolute top 5 to me .

Sutherland was a hard one to read - I can see the natural eye, talent and balance of an athlete. It's hard to figure out if his frame will fill out and allow him to be a dominant body-on-body KPF. Freo have been burned by too many lightly framed high picks of late, makes me revert to the 'pick Fogerty' position .

Just some musings of mine

I'd probably switch these two names around and still select them 1 and 2 this year as well.

I'm glad I don't actually have to make the choice. I think Lukosius would go first, but I just love Rankine. I'd have taken him at #1 last year as a 16 year old based on what he did in the SANFL.

It's shaping like an incredible year for SA. On top of the ones I've mentioned in the OP, there's still a really promising ruckman in Ruben Flinn, Luke Valente who I thought was unlucky not to play at the Champs this year and 194cm Hugo Munn. More Academy members than both the Victorian sides.

Everyone always sees a different player when they watch potential draftees. I thought there was a bit of Lachie Neale about Zac Bailey, in the way he works his way through traffic. He's just a good footballer, one I certainly wouldn't be unhappy with Fremantle drafting.

Picking talls is certainly hard, I'm much better with midfielders and small forwards. I think if you were basing it just off the Championships, then you probably wouldn't be picking either Brander or Sutherland in the top 5. Just not enough plays that make you really take notice. Brander has runs on the board, and has the versatility to play at either end. I still see him as a #1 defender with his ability in the air and field kicking, but more a #2 forward. I just don't see a team building around him at full forward, which is one reason I'm slightly hesitant about Fremantle taking him. Sutherland is one of those picks where you just have to back yourself - if he's gotten where he has without U18 football while focusing mainly on cricket, then how good will he be once you get him into an AFL environment. That's what teams will be asking themselves. And I doubt anyone on BigFooty has really seen enough of him to make that call.
