With the exception of MK being out injured and replaced by Pittonet, here's our round 5 team, picked all the way back in February.
I recall somebody (me) said Levi could play in the backline and someone (you?) said that he cannot.
OK, plenty said he couldn't, but I know what I saw at Casey.
Not putting a line through ECurnow at all, but there's surely a line of thought at the club as to who's the best suitor to replace him.
I have little doubt that by years end he won't be attending 90% of the centre square stoppages. Let's use the last 5 games for this.
Rider: When I say I have little doubt, it's because I see some of our mids given more opportunity and making more impact.

If that were the case it would have happened regularly by now. Club obviously do not see it that way. People talk about his intercept marking which is a good thing but he needs to be a defender first and foremost and be able to kick out of defense with some precision. What’s his one on ones like, is he agile enough to mark up on a smaller defender? That’s why plow is a better option he is good against smaller and ok against slightly bigger bodies.
Pretty close. The two other players I see being long time regulars are SPS and Fisher.
Every player may go through poor form, but I feel these two will be given more time to play their way out of it.
I'd also have McGovern there as a forward. I'm not worried about him at all.
Even though you haven't listed a ruck-man, Pittonet and TDK should hold us in good stead.
So what after that?
Dangerous forwards - There's certainly a gap there and then.....the big one; Which of our mids will come through and not just become regulars, but stars?
This has been my query for some time now.
You have not included on your team list: #5-Setterfield, #3-Dow, #19-Stocker, #13-Kennedy, #17-Kemp, #20-Philp and #5-Petrevski-Seton.
We have 7 first round picked mids (I'm not including #10-O'Brien & #21 Cuningham)) and we're still not sure which of them will come through with any certainty.
Some of these mids (not including Philp & Kemp) have to not just have the odd good games, but start really imposing themselves upon the comp.

Right now and moving forward, we are thin in quality KPD stocks. Luckily it shouldn't be too hard to rectify

With all of the uncertainty and discussion around what will be our Best 22 come Round 1, perhaps we need to rethink and re-frame the discussion. Rather than a Consensus 22... perhaps we need to separate our list into 3 groups. 1. Consensus Best 18 players - based on CJMB and his outstanding...www.bigfooty.com
How are you assessing the KPD stocks, I mean, do you think the ones we have, aren’t up to scratch? Our back 6 is relatively settled at the moment, with Marchbank working back from injury, however I’m not sure how he fits in, him aside, is BSOS a defender? What’s happened to Macreadie? He looked solid at the start but has really struggled with injury. I also see Gov and CAS being able to play there if needed going forward.
I do though see small/medium defenders being thin, the guys that can play on the smaller forwards or midfielder/forward hybrids, other than Plow who i am not convinced on, I don’t see many suitable players.

I probably shouldn’t have included Williamson in there, as I only was trying to include players who have actually shown consistent performance, not just pure optimism, or a handful of highlights to go off. It’s also why I think chasing guys like Papley at seasons end is super important, it adds another lock to your future team, removes doubt.
I like both SPS and Fish but I’m not sure what either of their best positions are, I don’t think SPS can defend as he lacks strength and physicality and Fish has shown in patches he can be a good player but is going through some poor form, low confidence, injuries, so I’m not sure what his best position is.
All though Ive liked what I’ve seen from Pitt, he has played 8 games of footy, so just not enough to go off and TDK is the same, I would like to actually see and hear how he goes after actually playing in the ruck for an extended period of time.
Cuningham and Setters have this year to press their case and if Cunners can shake his injuries, we should be able to know how good he is by seasons end, I also liked Setters game last week but need a bigger body of work to go off.

Don't worry about SPS and Fisher. Both have AFL traits in spades and have traits others don't.
It's often when we start doubling up on types, that causes most concern for me.
I have no issue with SPS, Fisher, Dow, Setterfield. All are different types that can offer different things to the team.
If I as to do your exercise, I'd have -
Docherty Jones ............____________Marchbank/Plowman
Williamson Weitering SPS___________Although I feel either Stocker or Philp make for a good fit also
Walsh Cripps Fisher________________Would love to put O'Brien here, but just not feeling it for now.
Martin CCurnow............. ___________Cuningham makes for a good start, but not sure yet.
McGovern McKay ............. __________Huge gap post Betts
Backline will find its way without issue having Docherty and Weitering running it.
Forward line is dangeorus but still needs one last piece of the puzzle.
Midfield though is uncertain. That's not to say it won't come about and given all the high picks we've used on it, it should become a strong component of the whole.....but the things is, we just don't know who and when.

With which combination of defenders though? Was it ever with jones, weit plow simmo Daisy and (can’t recall who else we had at the time) ? We had a lot of injuries during time when bolts was coaching.
In current set up who would he replace?
If Jones or Weitering go down for an extended period we are in trouble
Sure Levi could go back there, but prefer him forward with Charlie being out
Let's be clear, Marchbank is not a KPD
This area needs to be addressed this trade period unless the club feels one of Macreadie or BSOS come on. Goddard is not the answer either

Exactly. It's easy to say we have lots of KPD's in Macreadie, BSilvagni, Goddard etc but we just don't have any good ones.
We'd get by the odd game or two without one of them, but should either do a knee, we just don't have anything remotely that makes for a substitute.
Certainly an area we should be looking at and not by way of draft but by way of trade. A second rounder maybe, for the right type?

Only way Ed doesn't play in the guts back half of the year, is if we are out of contention for the 8
Ed will once again be a starting mid next year

Except for the couple of weeks Weitering played 2s.
Just remember whoever attends the centre bounces doesn't necessarily need to play midfield straight after. You can have stoppage specialists that start in the centre and then switch out for a midfielder once general play allows for it. I wouldn't be surprised to see a bit of this happen throughout the year as a way of transitioning others into some of these positions.
Which players do you feel could do this best?
Martin is a beauty as the way he enters and understands the space in the forward 50, is exceptional.
Unfortunately you only see this via down he ground footage. He just knows where to go and when.

Lets say it’s trade time and we are on the lookout for a KPD, a good one as you say, the cost for this argument isn’t important.
Any player other than a draftee will want to come in and be best 18, they’re not going to accept a trade, being a good player and come to us, purely in case one of Jones or Weitering go down injured.
I think the situation is quite hard, unless you go to the draft or unless you recruit a player nearing retirement who is happy to play backup.
If Marchbank can’t cover for an injured Jones or Weitering and can’t play on small like Plowman, I really don’t know what his role is. If BSOS comes on, then we are in a good space.

Yeah I was serious but it was that long ago it’s not clear in my mind what the set up was back then with availability and also being under a different coach. Should be trialled because as we’ve found with cas and jones you will never know until you try it.

I have no idea who he replaces, Im not sure what his best position is but I remember him playing with Jones, Plow and Weits whenever he was fit. Having him on the bench makes sense, but moving on to next year, we have already decided that Harry, Charlie, Gov and CAS will be in the side, so let’s say CAS is in the bench as well, it leaves the side very tall and not overly fast.

Are we all aware that Marchy is only 2 cm taller and 4 kg heavier than plowman? I don’t see why either couldn’t play a similar role. Plow does appear a bit more agile but March would have the advantage against bigger bodies.
Do u think BSOS will develop into one? Perfect replacement imo for JonesyRight now and moving forward, we are thin in quality KPD stocks. Luckily it shouldn't be too hard to rectify

I rate him, but think it will take 18 months before he is ready
I think this could suit Dow the most. He's speed out of the middle and ball winning abilities could be quite useful whilst perhaps not perhaps having the fitness and strength yet for a full time midfield role. I don't think he's ready to replace Ed's work and output just yet so this could work well in that it plays to his strong clearance work.
Like you pointed out, Martin is one we could also use in this way if we wanted to then rest him on the half-forward line. Potentially Fisher could start in the centre and then move to a wing.
I think there's a few options we could consider so that Ed starts attending less and others get more of a look-in and that transition begins to occur. Once the clearance is complete and there's a stoppage in play, Ed can resume the run-with and inside role as per normal.
