They had a run of 6 in a row against us. Since then it has been 4-1-1 our favour with the 4 wins being by 76, 74, 62 and 96 points.

It took Ratten 6 games v's the bombers before he finally got a win against Knights.

Ratten 3 v Hird 1 .....plus 1 draw
Ratten 1 v Knights 5
Ratten 0 v Sheedy 1
Pagan 5 v Sheedy 3 .... plus 1 draw

Except for the fact that Sheedy didn't coach in that drawn game.

Gary O'Donnell was coaching Essendon that day.

O'Donnell vs Pagan - 1 draw.

Curious.

It used to be the leg speed of the Dons that would get him.

Is that still what he struggles against?

I think Fremantle is the only team that has a winning record against us over our previous five matches. It could possibly have been written off as an anomaly, with us having played so many games recently against the Dockers over at Subiaco, early in the season, when they seem to be firing. But the elimination final last year suggests it might be a bit more than that. Round 14 next year at Simonds (first game there against Freo since 2009) would be a good time to get one back on them.

We've got the wood on Hawthorn and Richmond currently. Most of our recent 200+ gamers have only lost to the Tigers one or two times. Milburn (not surprisingly) had the worst record against them: 13-4. Ling and Chapman were 13-1, Scarlett was 13-2, Bartel 12-1.

I think it's more down to us having a weaker side in 2 of the last 3 seasons. Common sense - when your team isn't as strong you lose games you normally would have won. They had plenty of chances to win both the losses in Perth in early 2010 and 2012 but weren't good enough. Each turned out to be excellent indicators of our seasons - dismissed by some fans as irrelevant, but shown to be very accurate signs of decline on previous years.

Don't forget also that Fremantle have managed to play at Geelong precisely zero times in each of the last 3 seasons. Doesn't hurt their chances.

After finally beating previous bogey teams like St Kilda and the Dogs in 2012, hopefully we can finally beat our losing streak vs the Blues in 2013. Also, not sure of when we last beat Geelong in a H&A match - would be pre 2007 I would have thought. Another team we are yet to beat are those pesky GC Suns :D

Teams we generally play well against - Brisbane and 'generally' we have good games against the Swans (in recent years at least especially at the G).

Strange isn't it, he just struggled big time against the Dons.

Has it seriously continued with Freo?

Freaky.

apart from the 108 point win

Absolutely. In their recent games against us (besides the 2010 semi final), they have always played exceptionally well and the games have been a high standard. Pavlich's game against us in 2010 and his battle against Ablett was one of the best individual games in recent years. The Dockers also had their chances to beat us over there in 2008/09/11. Pavlich's poster after being 6-8 goals up (from memory) at two different stages of the game in 2008. Was it a potential holding the ball against Kelly in 2009 that wasn't paid when the game was in the balance, allowing us to kick a goal or two and get over the line (I seem to remember something like that)? And their poor finishing (Mayne being a major culprit, IIRC) in 2011.

Agree with the fact that they've been a bit lucky never having to play us at Kardinia, but we were saying the same thing about them playing us in Victoria full stop a few months ago, the team would have had to be fired up after a spiteful Round 1, where the Dockers got a five goal head start on us and we were playing catch-up all game. Then the same thing happened in the final, but much worse. The Cats players should have the game circled in their calendars already.

A few on either side of the ledger:

Highs
- Tom Hawkins' emergence as a genuine key forward
- Taylor Hunt getting the utterly thankless task of tagging and actually being reasonable at it
- Further experience for our younger players
- Chapman accepting his days as a midfielder are over and adapting to kick 35 goals as a pure small forward

Lows
- Horrible early season losses to Fremantle and North
- Menzel re-injuring his knee
- The complacent "turn it on in finals" bullshit that completely failed to appear when it mattered
- Continued protection of some senior players from the seconds when their form doesn't warrant selection (Corey, Stokes)

Reckon you might be looking for the best and worst of 2012 thread.

Wood - Richmond

You once may have had the wood over us but not anymore, in our last 6 games, You have won 3, We have won 2, and we have drawn 1. Hardly the wood on us.

Obviously we have the wood over the hawks.

Our bogey team? Well we've been so good for so long but I guess it would have to be freo now they beat us in Vic.
