Your Ideal Side for Round 1 2011 + Delisting/Traded Out Predictions

Ellard will stay, he's been really good in that role he has. If we want to delist players for having no legspeed then we will get rid of hadley and Mclean. I disagree about your opinions on poise and skill. He's played about 5 games, what do you expect? He's also been important in our clearances. He does not lack leg speed to the extent that a few others in our side do like Hadley and Mclean. Ellard is an improving player and worth persisting with and will be a very important back up player if our best 22 is avaliable. I would not delist Ellard or rookie him, but I would trade him if something decent came up.

We do not lack medium sized defenders. Russell has been good. Davies was very good considering he is in his first year and Touhy will be really good for us next year. Walker was also good pre injury too. Gibbs and Lucas are no mugs either. We are loaded with medium sized defenders and have some quality ones coming on.

We lack a Mundy type and a Frawly type in our side.

I think our delist squad will be:
Fisher
Wiggins
Browne
Thornton
O'Keeffe
Tiller
Anderson

Anderson and one other may get rookied.

I wouldn't blink if we delisted Ellard. It's unfortunate that Ellard's tenacity is matched by his lack of awareness, legspeed, poise and skill. I don't see a place for Ellard in the Carlton side as anything more than a top up player beyond 2011. I stand by my view that Browne has more talent and skill than Ellard. ....

I'd kick up a fuss, a real big one. Not going to compare him with Browne coz I don't think they play the same role but If you asked me what I'd like to see more of from our boys I'd say tackling 9/10 times and Ellard's tenacity for mine makes up for his deficiencies. I'd have him in with Brock over Hadley next year

Delist and trade

Ellard (rookie), Fisher, Tiller, Thornton (trade), Wiggins & Anderson.

Really hope that Tuohy can develop.

We lack a medium size defender like Nick Smith who stiched up Betts in the final with a great game.

Be careful there. You might upset his #1 supporter like I once did and did he let me know it. But we need players with class to take us to a flag. Players who are just tenacious will keep us middle of the ladder.

Tackling and contested possession win games too. .. While Ellard is still a fringe player, with all our injured players on deck, at least he brings that hardness that we lack. .. You need a mix of players to win a premiership. ..

He was basically standing on Watson's toes when he was asked to tag him in the Essendon match. He has commitment, something some of our boys cant do for a whole match.

At the end of the day, at the end of the year he was consistently in our best 22. Yes there were injuries but Id much rather keep him than 6 or so others.

Based on 2010, Ellard is clearly more required than Browne (although I'd have liked them to try Browne as a centreman rather than defender).

You might be right and based on skill level it will probably happen.

He also can play as a BP - he had some good games at VFL level tagging AFL level players out of games e.g. matthew Stokes

im hoping we dont trade any players in this year because i dont think there is any quality players that would add to our needs. i would like to see us trade for picks there are some very good players in the top 40 or50 picks in the years draft.

delist- anderson, fisher, johnson, wiggins and tiller

rookie promotions- white, ellard and garlett

trade-
yarran to west coast for pick 4
hampson to gold coast for pick 9
walker to st kilda for pick 24(depending where they finish)
thornton to hawthorn for pick 37

draft
pick 4 day or darling
pick 9 watson
pick 18 lynch
pick 24 green
pick 36 prestia
pick 37 young

rookie picks
phillips
labi
bray

i wouldn't necessarily support trading yaz for pick 4 (prefer if player volunteers for a trade). However, the logic of gambling on established players risks a Voss disaster, if taken to the extreme. In the scenario of a player not in our best side i'd prefer to trade for a pick than a different player since i'm not sure any of the players actually up for trade fill a missing link or just add depth. E.g i think tarrant is too big an outlay when we have white and austin in development.

My ideal team which is subject to change during the mind numbing off season of trade suggestions. :(

B: Armfield Jamison Joseph
HB: Russell Austin Gibbs
C: Simpson Mclean Lucas
HF: Yarran Henderson Garlett
F: Walker Waite Houlihan
R: Kreuzer Judd Murphy

I/C: Warnock Grigg Robinson Betts

Emerg: Davies Hampson Scotland

Robinson didn't trouble the scorers in the final, but his one per centers and intensity is easily overlooked as part of our structure.

Scotland will probably prove us wrong again, yet I hope Grigg, Robinson and Lucas are all there to step up in 2011.

How can you compare Ellard to Mclean who doesn't tag?

Brock is still great at taking the ball right off the hands of the ruckman. Is also good at squeezing out short kicks in traffic like Mitchell who is similarly slow.

Playing as a defensive forward and a defensive midfielder is Browne's best go, so he is similar to Ellard in that regard. Ellard was too slow and a turnover specialist with four or five kicks in the added heat of finals. Even Moore and Bolton ran Ellard down to spoil his kicks.

Browne is better at finding space than Ellard and a longer kick inside fifty because he isn't rock slow. I lked his goal in the VFL after he beat Medhurst on the wing and ran hard to kick it from 50. I can still picture Browne hitting Fev in successive weeks off a step with both feet. And snapping a point from 50 on his wrong foot against the Tigers that easily made the distance.

With Mclean, Grigg and Lucas likely to be ahead of Ellard next year, I would prefer it we kept Browne for another year. I reckon he has more to add playing Ellard's role as a defensive mid who pushes forward. Browne marked well and kicked straight against WC when he played Houlihan's role. I hope Browne's papers aren't seemingly stamped like Thornton's.

In my ideal team, I have Joseph playing midfield like Jack and tagging. AJ has Ellard's desperation, but is quicker and a longer kick. Lovely pass by AJ to set up Warnock's goal against Sydney. I expect Yarran and Kerr to step up next year because they're both beautiful kicks. And with Buckley coming onto list in the 2011 draft, I don't see a spot opening up for Ellard any time soon.

Plus, there's a good chance we'll get at least one mid or flanker in this draft with more ability than Ellard. I wouldn't be shocked if Cachia steps up and develops into a similar player to Carrazzo. So it's hard to see Ellard staying on the list, let alone becoming a fixture in our side. However, I wouldn't be against the club keeping Ellard and not Johnson on a one year deal.

No soft *****.

Trade those for more kids - I hope not. Except for the Thornton if he wants to go let him. The top two are kids themselves you're just wasting the development done on them & going backwards starting again with unknown quantities. Both these two will end up as good players at a minimum but I suspect more. We will have enough picks after the delistings/retirements and continue to develop the young guys we have already.

I like that suggestion of Armfield playing a Clinton Jones type role, I remember he did a few tagging jobs in late 2009 and did really well.

B: Paul Bower, Michael Jamison, Aaron Joseph
HB: Jordan Russell, <insert CHB>, Kane Lucas
C: Dennis Armfield, Shaun Grigg, Bryce Gibbs
Foll: Robert Warnock, Chris Judd, Marc Murphy
HF: Chris Knights, Lachlan Henderson, Kade Simpson
F: Jeffery Garlett, Jarrad Waite, Eddie Betts
I/C: Matthew Kreuzer, Chris Yarran, Brock McLean, Andrew Carrazzo
EMG: Marcus Davies, Heath Scotland, Zach Tuohy

Obviously Ratten and co. have indicated the need for another tall defender, I think we should grab someone through the draft rather than trading for one unless Tarrant comes at a reasonable price.
Bower has been hampered by quad injuries this year and in the past has performed quite well on opposition tall forwards, we also have Austin - not sure if he'll make it, we have Simon White is a tad undersized for what we are looking for.

You are right, it is a good idea - so much so that I remember bringing up that exact idea and comparison in early April. ;)

I too would like to see Army in that role at times. Great minds think alike, I guess. :p

BEST 22
FB: Armfield, Jamison, White
HB: Lucas, Bower, Russell
C: Simpson, Gibbs, Scotland
HF: Yarran, Waite, Murphy
FF: Betts, Henderson, Garlett
FOLL: Kreuzer, Judd, Mclean
INT: Warnock, Walker, Grigg, Carrazzo

Would like to see walker play in the midfield,
Robinson skills and decision making is terrible,
Got to work on the defensive side of our midfielders, our kicking skills and our fitness in the pre-season,
got to get bower fit and stronger so he can take the good CHF
2011 should be a good year hopefully upwards of 6th

Not sure why the Austin love, I think it is more in hope than any positive form.

Good too see Scotland not listed in many teams.

FB: Russell - Jamison - Joseph
HB: Armfield - Austin - Drummond^
C: Simpson - Judd - Murphy
HF: Yarran - Kruezer - Gibbs*
FF: Henderson - Waite - Garlett
Foll: Warnock - Carrazzo - Ellard

I/C: McLean, Betts, White, Lucas

Emg: Jacobs/Hampson**, Bower, Robinson

^Josh Drummond should be our first priority in the draft... will float perfectly across hb giving run and a penetrating kick to allow gibbs to move more into the middle - and stop my heart racing everytime i see Jordo take a kickout

*Gibbs playing the defensive half forward role could be a massive positive. He will be more damaging on the scorebird that Carrazzo in that role and better for midfield rotations than Walker (who i saldy think will go) or Houlihan who played that role

**Whichever ruck stays on...likely to see one leave the blues in search of more opportunity

Very surprised to see AJ not slotted into majority of teams somewhere.. has had fantastic two yrs in the number one shutdown role.
Bower/Austin/White are really gonna have a fight on their hands for the starting CHB spot with 2 of 3 likely to play each week.
Kruezeer will play more forward (as expected every year since drafted) because of his knee. Rucking to rest the tower Warnock who will bulk up over pre-season and be very handy in 2011... I luv the fact that it was so hard to pick this team due to young options i had... don't be surprised to see Levi Casboult line up in the goal square early in 2011, especially if Kruize is fit and ready to ruck

For a start, there is no decent key defenders up for trade that I have heard of and Tarrent is not in the ball park when it comes to a good fit for Carlton so. All the stress over a key defender when we have Austin and White coming into favor next year and Bower who played this year half fit, perhaps we are over reacting a little. It's quality midfield depth and grunt we need and don't have looking to come in appart from Mclean and he's just 1 man. We need a group of center players with plenty of toughness about them. Not second rate or old KPDs.

B: Armfield Jamison Russell
HB: Lucas White Bower
C: Simpson Mclean Murphy
HF: Yarran Henderson Garlett
F: Betts Waite Kreuzer
OB: Warnock Mundy Judd
IC: Gibbs Grigg Carrazzo Robinson
EM: Joseph Scotland Austin

IN (From last match): Lucas, White, Mclean, Yarran, Kreuzer, *Mundy*, Grigg
OUT: Jacobs, Walker, Ellard, Hadley, Scotland, Joseph, Davies

Close: Davies, Cachia, Touhy, Ellard, Hampson, Kerr

Trade:
IN: Mundy (maybe 2nd rounder)
OUT: Walker (maybe Jacobs/Hampson)

Be good to see a bit of grunt and have some midfielders with a bit of shit in em like that team there has.

FB: Russell :: Jamison :: White
HB: Armfield :: Bower :: Scotland
C: Gibbs :: Murphy :: Simpson
HF: Houlihan :: Henderson :: Yarran
FF: Betts :: Waite :: Garlett
R: Kreuzer :: Judd :: Mclean

Bench: Warnock :: Lucas :: Tambling :: McKernan

I tried but couldn't find any room for the following players:

Robinson, Davies, Hammer, Ellard
