White hasn't played much first class cricket at all lately. What are his most recent scores for the Vics in first class cricket. I'd like to see him go back to shield cricket dominate and then be selected for test cricket but until that happens I feel he is an ODI, T20 specialist.

I tend to agree, though he has averaged 50 in the FC cricket he has played over the last 3 years. He has done a lot more in FC cricket recently than Ferguson, in any case.

Bias? I have called for Ferguson's inclusion in the ODI team (though for whom I'm not sure, it's a tough choice).

However, Ferguson has not once performed to a level in FC cricket that suggests he is ready for Test action. The highest average he has managed over a season is 42 FFS!
We all need to remember though that he did miss that whole year with a knee injury. If Ferguson had been available then, I have no doubt he'd have a baggy green cap by now. The fact he belted a big 100 in his first Shield game back after a year off can only be a positive. Ferguson is clearly in our best ODI and T20 (not sure why people disagree with me here, his T20 record is awesome) sides, and a Test spot can't be far away. Kwawja needs to be blooded in one dayers first I feel, like Ferguson, before earning his baggy green.

So what if he had a year off? Big whoop, I'm talking about averages, and the best he has averaged over an entire season in his CAREER is 42!

And he hit a big hundred in his first Shield game? Khawaja hit a big 200 on the same pitch. Khawaja is a rubbish OD player, but he's the best FC batsman not currently playing Test cricket in Australia.

Maybe because he had a whole extra year to play?

Completely irrelevant. As Eddiesmith said, White has only played one extra innings, but he has also been a more impressive and damaging FC player in those innings.

Hazlewood is gone for the Summer

Not according to this article written one hour ago...

Emerging young quick Josh Hazlewood is targeting a Christmas comeback from a back problem which has slowed his meteoric rise up Australia's pace bowling pecking order.

...

Having already successfully recovered from a stress fracture, the teenager was optimistic he would fully recover and be back in action by the turn of the year.

white isn't even in contention. he had his tests in india, he's been fit but hasn't got a look in. what makes people think he's suddenly gonna be considered test material? realistically its out of kwaj, fergs and smith atm. they all bring qualities to the situation facing us (a middle order prone to collapse and a very good spinner with a penchant for lefties) that the others lack. excellent first class record in his debut seasons vs proven temperament against international attacks and right hand option vs handy leg breaks with potential to develope and right hand option.

even more realistically, nothing will change til the 3rd or 4th test when we make a kneejerk reaction and play catch up for a series we've already surrendered the momentum in

Watson
Katich
Ponting (c)
Clarke
North (with Kwawaja coming in i'd expect North to step up to No 5)
Khawaja
Paine (better keeper, not that far behind in batting)
Hauritz (would prefer Smith but not in Brisbane)
Siddle
Hilfenhaus
Bollinger (one leftie is enough)

12th Man: Johnson

Please don't tell me we'll rush it. He's a promising young quick with a back problem. Whenever it looks like he's ready to go, give him another month off.

So on the one hand he is guilty of not getting out tailenders, and on the other he flatters his figures by getting out tailenders?

Wickets taken against 1-7 batsmen

Hilfenhaus 83.4 %
Bollinger 73.5%
Johnson 71.1%
Siddle 63.3%
Hauritz 61.9%

This shows how good Hilfenhaus has been bowling, without reward. Wickets by the Hilf are, you could argue, around 12% more important than Johnson's.

Or it shows that Hilfenhaus takes all his wickets with a new ball when its swinging and is less effective with an older ball when the lower order comes in

No Hussey. No North. No Haddin. No Hauritz.

I hope that (c) next to Clarkes name is a joke?

Obviously they wont make that many changes but I really hope they bring in another batsman for North or Hussey or even both. White should come in first followed by Ferguson. The NSW love will help Haddin get a game no doubt. I think we're almost better off putting a wheelie bin behind the stumps sometimes.

I daresay this was discussed in the recent ODI thread - but for the first time in a few years - MJ actually swung the ball.

We all know that he can drfit it across the right hander. He was almost unplayable when he could swing it in. He seems to find a rhythm and when he is swinging it - his pace is also up.

I appreciate it was the white ball - but I can't remember him moving if off the straight in a while.

Fingers crossed he has stumbled into something

On the X1 - I don't think any changes will be made - with perhaps Haddin resuming business behind the stumps.

At the Gabba - i'd rather go in with 4 quicks and use North as the spinner. He's just as likely to get a wicket as Hauritz.

However - North hasn't warranted being in the side since before the NZ tour.

What is all this talk about Ferguson?

He averages 35 in FC cricket. I haven't seen him play much, but his record doesn't suggest he should be picked.

Duck before the Adelaide boys have a cry.

He's half as good as his own team-mate - if they'd pick Klinger - everyone would think it was deserved.

Picking Ferguson - 1 match after a knee recon would be a joke. They'd be better off seeing if Lehman or Siddons still had their pads.

Why not? Because Khawaja is better than White, Smith and Ferguson, Doherty is rubbish in FC cricket, and Bollinger is currently the best bowler in Australia.

Khawaja needs to have at least one consistent season at domestic level before he's considered for the Test team, Doherty can only be as effective as Haurtiz currently is and Bollinger is injured.

i'd be happy with two of ferguson, khawaja and smith. even white for that matter even though thats off the cards. main thing is to get rid of those two nervous nellies from west oz:D

Who did Klinger pigroot?

2000 runs in 2 years is a mile ahead of Ferguson. Callum's only just got that in his career

Klinger, Smith and Khawaja are a mile ahed of White and Ferguson.

IMO - i don't care if they are openers - but hughes, rogers and jaques would be ahead of White and Ferguson.

I can't be accused of state bias because my rabble of a state can't produce cricketers.

When it comes to batting - runs and more runs should be what gets you selected.

The Australian test team isn't a teaching ground for blooding 'promising' young blokes - that's what shield cricket is for (and perhaps short versions). When blokes start making centuries in shield cricket - give them a go. If they can't score tons - don't pick them.

I read through this thread and all the fapping over White and Ferguson - i just can't see why wither are in the frame. Marcus North scores more runs for Australia then Ferguson does for SA - and people want North sacked and Ferguson in??

I'm all for north getting the chop - shoudn't have been in the side since last Aus summer - but fair crack - a bloke with 5 tons in 6 seasons - and a season best of 2.
