Yes, and that’s been true since the old Dr. j and magic tv games on the Atari.

Doesn’t amount to anything
Video games are a bit more involved these days and heavily licensed. The Dr J v Magic game was 1 game with 2 players. A bit different.

The only reason I knew Dr J was because of playing that game.

They do?
Don’t think I’ve ever seen one in SA?
James NBA, absolutely.
Crows jumpers? 10 000’s in fact you’d see more crows jumpers interstate than you’d see Messi jumpers in SA.
It may be popular elsewhere but australia it’s not, soccer hasn’t just been around for a few years, it’s been around forever and it’s not taking off now or ever.
At my kids school every uniform free day most boys wear some sort of sports top and more soccer tops than AFL. Messi PSG tops are very popular.

If it ever does I won’t be here to see it… thank god

Yes, I understand & appreciate what you're saying .....but Soccer Clubs are still broke .....young stars leave Australia at the first sign of opportunity

It's still fact ....2nd rate competitions can never compete with Indigenous National Sports ......has Soccer impacted the American NFL ?

Now that Beckham has signed for LA, you wait, soccer will take over the USA. NFL is done, basketball at risk, baseball might struggle through.

So your son's interests and those of his mates might not be reflective the greater population and more reflective of your household courtesy of your keen interest in the world game?
Um that post you quoted was from a totally different topic, try again.

The discussion isn't about where we are now. Its about where we will end up.

Gentle reminder that the US will host the World Cup in 2026.

we understand the discussion because we've had it multiple times before. Seems like every few years there's people that all of a sudden become experts in the certain takeover of AFL by by soccer. I'd say it's a full moon type thing, but that's monthly, but it does seem similar in terms of reliability. Did we have olympics this year? Maybe it follows the olympics cycle.

Nope but it's growing massively in America cause NFL fans aren't closed minded dickheads and see it as more sport to jump onto.

Go and check out the USA squad for the World Cup, multiple players based in the big 5 European leagues.

So fans can follow both sports in the USA, so it's not a risk to the local product there? But the AFL audience isn't open minded enough to follow 2 codes and so it's not growing here? Have you not just defeated your own argument?

And that is the problem

A fan can follow multiple sports around the world through to its best leagues

Just because someone supports Chelsea or Liverpool it doesn’t mean they’ll follow an inferior domestic product.

This is the same demented logic that led us to invest in e-sports and baseball

Which is another self defeating argument made by these guys. The ever-diminishing size of the planet. You don't need to give a crap about a busted arse local league when you can tune into best product on the planet for next to nothing.

Soccer was the no.1 participation sport in Australia in the 1970’s

This is a very slow burn

Kid participation has been a recurring thme too. AFL isn't stupid, it sees the competition which is why it changed kids rules to be less combatative. But seeing and engaging in competetion isn't the same is forecasting certain doom. I think there's a few around here that might not catch the nuance. Just saw a coke add on TV, they're obviously shit scared of Pepsi, they know they're done, will go the way of Mom n Pops Soda in 2 decades, you wait.

Been watching the world cup and I noticed that the sport is basically identical to how it was when I was a kid. There doesn't appear to have been transformational rule changes that everybody hates. It's also nice that the commentators aren't a bunch of w***ers who treat their job like it's a social club for has-beens or a chance to do comedy.
