Unfortunately our injuries will make top 4 a serious challenge now. Top 8 wide open obviously- we just have to hope for a healthier list from round 18 onwards than what we have right now. I honestly think our best 22 can beat anyone in Melbourne. Avoiding Freo / Brisbane away finals will be important so top 4 or even top 2 is going to be extremely important this season.

Stocker, Honey and Marchbank all getting into their seasons now could help out. Jeez if everyone was fit at the same time selection would be difficult. We'd be legitimate top 2 threat.

We'll just have to do it ourselves. Win more than them other contenders for the 8 and don't look any further ahead then next week. Enjoy the season, we're winning more than we're losing for the first time in a decade.

5 days until our game, pretty happy it is on a Friday, it doesn’t feel like the gap was that large this year.
Hoping we can beat * comfortably, it is a good opportunity for S Durdin to find his feet before we play some higher quality opposition.

Just quickly on our losses for this year. Freo, Suns and Collingwood, are all likely to finish top 10. They may prove to be higher quality teams at the end of the season then many have credited them to be. Could not be prouder of how our club is going this year! Go Blues

Freo and suns were clearly better than us on the day.

Filth however were very lucky to get that win.

Wondering how those losses play out if we hadn't lost a key player early in each game
We certainly win the pies game.

Cripps was in outrageous form when he went down against GC. Who knows. Could have been the difference

We've had to endure such a ridiculous amount.

Take out any teams #1 ruckman, #1 key forward and #1 key defender medium/long-term and they would absolutely flounder.

Melbourne: Gawn, McDonald, May
Fremantle: Darcy, Taberner, Pearce
Brisbane: McInerney, Daniher, Andrews

I think only Fremantle can somewhat cope.

I think Brisbane cover there too. BUT take 6 (and I'm being generous here) of the best 22 out of any of those teams then in my opinion becomes a different story

Essendon milestone celebration game

Special song penned to the tune of 'I don't want to spoil the party' by the Beatles.

We would love to spoil their party
So we'll go
We would love their disappointment
To show
Yes tonight we'll make them sad
When we smash them we'll be glad
We still loathe them....

Etc etc etc. :sneaky:
Here's the original ...so you can pen the 2nd and 3rd verse if you feel up to it.

Ps. I miss Royal Blues. The master of transforming songs.
Come back R.B!

Yep Dockers seem to do fine with a smaller forward line. I think they'd struggle a bit without Pearce though.

Melbourne are already struggling without May and McDonald...throw in Gawn as well and they'd drop right back.

Brisbane have also lost 2 games in the last few weeks and haven't looked quite as damaging without Daniher.

It's not just those 3 positions we are missing though. We are also missing 2 other key defenders (Jones, Omac), and 2 x 3rd tall defenders (Gov, Marchbank).

So for Melb could add Petty, Smith and Tomlinson for example, on top of May. They'd be screwed.

Every team would absolutely struggle with our injuries.

Pretty crazy that we will be going into this game with Young and Durdin as our key defenders...

Young, new to the club and is Young and inexperienced.

Durdin joining from MSD, stepping up a level and little time to train with us.

Can see Essendon just getting into their key forwards as quickly as possible to test them out.

Not sure exactly what thread to put this post in but there’s been a bit of talk about our path to finishing in the top 8 in this thread so will chuck it here.

Since the top 8 finals system was implemented in 2000, no team has legitimately* missed the finals with 13 wins. The one exception of course of is the mob we play this week who won 14 games in 2013 but were rightfully banned for their pathetic performance enhancing drug program.

The equation is pretty simple for us: win 5 of the last 11 and we will almost be locked in for finals.

5 of those games we will likely start as favourites: vs Essendon, West Coast, GWS, Adelaide and Collingwood.

The other 6 games we will likely go in as underdogs or at close to even money: vs Richmond, Fremantle, St Kilda, Geelong, Brisbane and Melbourne.

Clearly we are a bit undermanned at the moment but hopefully we see Harry back in the next few weeks and Weiters and Pitto back in 5-6 weeks. Despite the injuries, we’re still in a strong position to play finals. A win this week will really enhance our prospects. I’ve got no doubt the boys will crack in (as they have all year) and let’s hope we can sink these cheats.

yes someone posted a similar breakdown a few pages back..

Essendon is a very important game to win - makes the assumption that the next three games have a big L next to them easier to stomach digest and expunge.

Still and despite 20 years of misery following the mighty Blues - I am more optimistic than pessimistic. I can see Marchbank back in as a genuine intercepting defender over the next couple of weeks to help Young/Durdin - the only fix required ( for which there is no real solution ) is for a genuine ruckman - it is somewhat galling watching other sides with lots of 'spare' rucks all looking bigger meaner and more developed than our non-existant stock - surely this gets fixed in the coming trade period?

Harry Machbank Weitering Pittonet all to come back in in a month or so - and more depth pushing performance coming as well in Cuningham/Honey after that.

Should make for a flying finish to the season.

Mostly agree but tend to think if Melbourne lost Gawn they would cope with Jackson sole ruckman and Ben Brown to help out.
I think it May they struggle to cover most. Lose May and Lever and their backline would be in real struggle town.
We've had to rebuild a backline without Jones, that not by design, then lose McDonald that was tried out in pre-season to pick up the slack, then McGov in new interceptor role down back and then try to have Weiters teach Lewis Young on the fly how to be a key defender. Just as he does that for a month and a bit, he goes down too. So we now down to someone new to club in pre-season and poor Young with no one experienced to teach him and to sink or swim now.
This would be like Demons trying to cover May, Lever, Petty and Tomlinson all out and try to teach whatever tall guys capable of backline into those roles within games. Actually just looking at their list, they have more depth there as could call on Mitch Brown and Majak Daw so they would get by but not top of ladder for too long. We brought in Durdin that really the delayed back up for losing Jones back in summer.

I think every club will struggle if lose prime key defenders. Lions without Harris Andrews would be massive set back. Dogs without Keath has proven similar this season. Dockers much better when Alex Pearce playing in team, Swans without Paddy McCartin would find it hard. Kind of highlights it all will come down to a bit of luck with avoiding injuries if you there at pointy end of finals.

As you would, but we will be aiming to move it quickly to Charlie and Jack forward and they more than ok at ground level if weather is shit so I confident we will find our way to win again. I am comfortable in Durdin to play as the alternative was more underdone Marchbank that also not same body size. We have options as to whom to play on Wright now. Young on Wright and Durdin on Harris Jones is probably what we will do but no fussed if other way around.
Stringer is tougher match up but maybe Docherty, Kemp or Stocker for him.
