Lobb is a good ruck too. Some of his taps last freo game lead to goals. He is not going to be playing just forward with the occasional chop out. He's going to have some stints there while English rests forward.
He's ok in the actual ruck contest but doesn't do much else around the ground when on the ball. Doesn't have the dynamism or game sense of English.

Can't scapegoat Rohan Smith after one bad year. He's been our most solid line coach.
Yeah doesn't seem right. He's been heralded by players and other coaches alike for many years.
While our defenders aren't the best in the league, the bigger issue is defense through the midfield. It puts our back line under ridiculous levels of pressure.

Particularly since last year the midfield was applying so much more pressure compared with this year. Last year the team was pretty low in terms of genuine 1v1 defensive contests with most balls coming in long and high giving others a chance to compete. We were still poor in 1v1 contests though, just didn't see as many. In the off season we lost out fwd line and midfield coach, those are the changes that have been detrimental.

Rohan Smith has been at the club for a long time now. I’m not opposed to a fresh voice and look. It’s possible whilst his loved amongst the group, he may not be getting through anymore.

Happy to keep him also. An entire assistant shake up would be the best case scenario imo.

I don't think Gawn plays only 60% ruck, but even if he did it's not really the same situation as Luke Jackson is a lot more competent in the ruck than Lobb. The difference between their setup and a potential English/Lobb setup is not the same.
He does, check the stats he rucks on avg between 50-70% game time each week - and he’s still considered the best ruck in the game because his output across a full game is huge.

I get the setup is different but most good rucks wouldn’t be rucking 80% of a game these days, especially if they’re such a beast in other positions. Even Darcy currently only rucks on avg about 70% of the game with Lobb and he’s the most traditional ruck in the comp (and 10x the centre square ruckman Timmy is)

A 60/40 pairing will almost certainly be the target imo

NFI why Rohan Smith should be taking the fall for this. You could make a reasonable argument that the defensive structure across the park is primarily to blame in combination with some further talented required in KPP stocks. How much responsibility should Smith be held for this breakout? Some of it maybe but to me it looks like we need another high level respected senior assistant who can even out Beveridge's weaknesses (revolving structure, 5m tactic, one on one defending).

Defence isn't the only thing thats dropped off, the midfield aren't performing as well as previous seasons, the forward line only has one regular winner and we just haven't been able to get a regular side out on the park. 2 best 22 players in Bruce and McLean (one of whom is a 50 goal a season forward) missing for the majority of the season is hard enough to replace let alone the big chunks of the season players like English, Smith, Hunter, Keath, Duryea, Vandermeer, Garcia have missed (maybe some others also) Even Darcy out for the first half hasn't helped. He probably would have debuted had he had the 8 or so extra games to start with. So thats another option we haven't been able to utilise.

I really don’t think our salary cap would be as tight as people were expecting - we’ve been really well managed for quite a few years now and have brought in no big signings (whereas as every year Carlton are bringing in a Saad, Martin etc and paying overs)

We’ve only brought in Keath & Bruce and we were very stingy at the trade table, I doubt we over paid on the contracts. Then Treloar popped up and we had the space last minute to fit his 600k in the cap - yet Carlton have used what 1.6 odd mil on just Williams & Saad?

Everyone else is home grown and on long term contracts (which usually means a few less dollars)

Lobb & one of Pearce/Barrass should really be the target, can’t see Pearce leaving though

I disagree here. Although Smiths been great over previous years, the proof is in the pudding this year and it’s pretty ordinary.

A line coaches job is to motivate, ensure the line plays with confidence and to imbed the messaging the coaches sell as a whole. They continue to teach the trade at training and at games and they are responsible for how they perform.

This season, our backs have been horrendous. Poor skills and decision making, our cohesion is poor, our 1v1 has been very poor even for our standards. And as individuals, nearly all have dropped away from last seasons form. Keith, Williams, Daniel all are no where near it. Gards improved and has since dropped away in recent weeks.

This isn’t just isolated to games where opposition teams transition with ease either. I’ve watched every game and they’ve been woeful at times regardless of how our team defends higher up.

Obviously not all responsibility lies with Smith, but it’s his job to get his line up and functioning. He hasn’t done that this year. He’s been at the club for a while, so a drop off is inevitable, as it is with Beverage.

This may not be why he’s moving on, but just looking at the performance of the line he’s responsible for, it’s been a pretty ordinary year. He’s not alone here either. Beverage also had a shocker, he’s just not as expendable.

This is very true, the good word is Bont and Libba both signed for well under's as well to keep money free for other players, nowhere close to the million the media harps on about.

Speaking of assistant coaches, with your inside knowledge, what do they see in Spangher as a forwards coach because Im baffled at how poorly the structure across the forward line has been this year. What was the reasoning/logic behind getting someone who played on the backline to be the forwards coach?

As far as I know talking to people who work at the club, Spang was as left field as it gets, it was a last minute as it gets - also have heard that the money we offer assistant coaches is well below what other clubs do, we chose to spend money in other areas instead (like sports science and recruitment) instead of investing into our coaching panel. The club was really banking on getting a female assistant coach outside of our soft-cap to help, but that was also knocked back by the AFL, supposedly our application/presentation was not all that great.

If you ask me we really need a look into our football department to re-jig where our money under the softcap is going, I'm with the rest of the Dogs-diehards that we need some serious experienced voices back in the coaching box.

Can't wait for new defensive coach Ryan Schoenmakers.

Cant say anyone's actually surprised, if anything more surprised at seeing him play on again this year
If we landed Soldo I suspect he wouldn't have.

Would love Alex Pearce but seems to be staying at Freo. Still only 27 as well, plenty left in him.

The others noted are all from WA hard to see them being keen to move interstate. Especially considering they are all best 22 and in contract (besides Logue).

I’m glad we’re trying though.

I’m part of (I assume) the same discord and a little bit of creativity was taken with the Rohan Smith point. No mention of being in danger of losing his job, just that the club were aware of our defensive problems and he was coping some flak.

The selling point I’d give Pearce is that we’ll rip up his contract if Tassie gets a team. In practice you would structure his [4] year contract as an initial 1-year deal but with [3] x 1-year extension options that either party can trigger.

Signed a 5yr contract last year, may have cold feet now he realises he’s going to see out his career at the bottom of the ladder but still makes it very very tough.

Woulda been a free agent too 😭 would have been perfect
Other than the AFL's propensity to introduce rules on the run I assume there is nothing that expressly restricts clubs and players from renegotiating contracts, including to change the number of years. Dale Thomas from memory renegotiated the removal of a games trigger to get an additional year. We were also able to renegotiate Tom Boyd's contract to essentially disappear.

The best option for the Eagles would be to renegotiate Barras' contract to be only a 1-year deal expiring at the end of this year, and thus making him a free agent. Given where the Eagles will finish a Band 1 compensation pick would be very appealing. I'm sure the AFL would take issue with gaming the system.
