At this age if he's still only playing 70% game time then you have to think he'll only ever be a second string midfielder and pretty limited
most weeks we end up with 8-9 players under 80% game time
A few in low 70's I put that down to rotations.
Also where we play guys

We seem to rotate our wings, HB and HF as well as mids.
Look at a guy like Kiddy everywhere although low 70s
The talls forward and back play most of the game

Neale does that here is the stats from AFL. Hugh and Bailey just crack over 80% and Bailey rests forward
On next page Rich 76, Lyons/Rayner 75, Kiddy 73, Take Zorko out as not finished a few games
Some of the other guys who been subs I assume game time effected so leave them out as well
As said not as many in high 80's as you think.. 4-5 on the bench they all come off
Normally after they are hot and kick a goal :)

I'm talking about Matho taking the next step and being a first string midfielder or a genuine A grader not just a second string, fringe player.

I think it might have been about the lowest (non-injury or sub and Tunstills debut) game of the year for us. Pretty much everyone else makes 70% every game.

Robertson is an interesting one. As it stands I have him in the 22 next season in place of Lyons, but if Ashcroft noms us where does that leave him? Could we still operate with a midfield of Neale / Robertson / Ashcroft (too young aside from Neale) with the regulars floating in and out (McCluggage / Berry etc)? I'd love him to stay on as he has all the traits to become a very solid player, but if Dev was to head back to WA it would be to WC with Freo appearing the likely destination for Jackson. I expect we'd be asking for a draft pick or two to ensure we get Ashcroft (if he chooses us) along with Fletcher?

We will be able to get the points this year for Ashcroft.
I would be looking for atleast their second next year and maybe a 4th this year for a few extra points for Fletch.

Lyons signed up for two, so we are better off trading Dev if he wants to go. Will get us future 2nd from Eagles easy, since he's contracted.

If I was the Eagles I’d laugh at such a request.

He’s a second round pick, who is depth and can barely get a game. We’re not getting close to what we used to draft him.

Ok,

ok, Oscar Allen then, hasn’t played a game all year.
Injury history, good trade I reckon.

Do we really want to watch Dev play 200 games for the eagles whilst Lyons jogs around the field next year like a slow moving bus?
Would much prefer to keep him.

I still think he will be a topliner.A goal he kicked in a game earlier this year was just amazing. The skill is there, the consistency and application is not.

His application is great... and he hasn't been given a go in seniors at his preferred role ie. inside mid.

He is signed up with us for a year, so we can use that as our leverage to get the second.
Without any contract, I agree - Eagles would walk us out the door.

Me too, and I think you are referring to the GWS game at the GABBA.

Dev and a couple others, just cannot get a consistent run at AFL to develop, so at this stage, our fringe players best is certainly good enough but they just have not yet acquired AFL standard consistency in their games. I don't think the VFL is that strong in some of the key positions, as I believe there is a significant step up from playing KP and inside mid in the VFL as opposed to the AFL.

Didn’t realise Robertson has been with us 3 years for 20 odd games. I like him and hope we keep him but if I were Devon I’d be asking to be traded instead of watching your career rot away in the 2s. He’ll be another Keays except better.
Worried Fagan will get another top 4, get the bum slaps from within for another top job, and in the mean time the oldies all get older, and the youth look elsewhere.

That’s the only negative I have had with Fages over the journey with us, in regards to his reluctancy of blooding younger players more games when players like Rayner (in the past) and now Lyons, (as well others) not performing as high-standard as they should be at AFL level.

Obviously it’s been difficult given the injury-free luck we have had over the past couple of years as well making it difficult for fringe players like Robertson, Berry Jnr & Mathieson to get a fully extended run at the top, but if we also have to keep one eye on the future as well and possibly play more fringe players (if they earn it through the reserves) against the lower-ranked oppositions, otherwise our club could experience a similar lean period to what we have experienced in the past after the 3-peat era.

I don’t think the issue is blooding young players, it’s just not giving them much responsibility in the best 22. They’re almost hidden away which is the frustrating part. We can’t fault the effort of the young guys brought in so I’m not sure what the coaches expect to see from them playing the roles they’re given.

Exactly.. how good would Dev be right now if he had played 15 games straight in the team as an inside mid? I could nearly bet a house that he would be delivering more than Lyons right now. I'd expect Prior type influence at the least

I doubt he’d outperform Lyons in terms of numbers but yes I do believe he would help the team and the midfield group more than Lyons is.
JL’s specialty is meant to be helping everyone set up for clearances which has been a big weakness for us, I hope the coaches don’t think he’s too important for our stoppage structures.
