It's nice to hear about his positives. The talk on our board is that we might be wanting to turn him into a key defender ala Roughead.
It's not beyond him. He's played a bit of footy there early and looked ok in
patches, but raw. My recollection is he set himself to play forward. He's a beautiful field kick at times, although he can miss a target trying to be too adventurous. And he's a great mark too - but intercept marking is more about reading the game IMO and I dunno about that aspect of his play.

Good to see bullshit rumours dismissed.
Greetings Brisbane board.

I live in Brisbane so I watch a lot of Lions games. Gotta say... Dan McStay is about the least noticeable player on your team. Most weeks I couldn't tell you if he's out there or not is how I think of him.
I checked his stats and they are horrible. Under 10 possession, less than a goal a game 3rd tall.
You guys are a top 4 side so there has to be a reason he's playing. I assume he does a role. What is it? What am I missing?

Could have sworn your lot said the same thing about Crisp.

Steak knives as he was called. Now you worship him like the next Jesus.

The Witherden scenario was handled well by the club in my opinion. Alex was a contracted player by the club however the club didn't consider Alex as being in their best 22 moving forward hence had the decency & honesty with him to give him the opportunity to find another club where he could play at the highest level. Should Alex not have found his way to The Eagles, he would have stayed at the club but probably played the rest of his contracted time in the 2's. I think (by memory) the Lions even payed some of his wages to get him to the Eagles....great gesture by Brisbane Lions 100% to give him a better opportunity somewhere else. "Shipped him out" is far from the truth but that's how you & others percieve it.
I am aware of all that.

But I do recall you posting somewhat different at the time, being very public on here that Alex didn’t want to go.

But all of that has nothing to do with the point I was making about loyalty.

I'd love to add a hard working, flanker/mid who can be an elite role player for us. Someone who just works their ass off defensively whilst finding the footy offensively. The Pies have a few e.g. Crisp, Lipinski and N.Daicos and are key to their success this year. Jarrod Berry at his best probably plays this role for us whilst players like Answerth and Ah Chee are good on the defensive end but don't find enough of the footy going the other way, although Ah Chee can at times.

I think Prior and Dev could be these sorts of players for us if given the opportunity.

He didn't want to go 100% but if he wasn't going to get a game in the best 22, his career was best looked at another club......obviously!!!
The Lions did the right thing by Alex. If he decided he didn't want to go, the Lions would have kept him to his contract. How is that not being loyal to an agreement and to the player?

Or are you saying the Lions were not loyal to Alex?

Please play the ball and not the man!!!

Prior definitely...not so sure about Dev.

I believe the underpinning aspect to this and the many other post about McStay leaving is about the perception of loyalty. Clubs have no problems moving players on to improve their list, negotiate with players who are still in contract with other clubs such as Charlie and Adams, that's professional sport. However it is a two way street, and I have no ill will for a player who is an unrestricted free agent seeking better money back in their home state.

Literally just made up by McIvor though, who is on a real hot streak of posting.
Hardly- plenty of people at a QAFL club I have a bit to do with that know far more about the Lions and have varied connections that talk about a lot of things Lions and that was one thing. Why is it with you Tom that anyone that shares a different perspective to you that you target and mansplane to quite a lot.

So what that many people value the loyaty that so many champions at this club and even other clubs rate highly, but why openly mock them as well. If it helps , I personally apoloize to you that I have offended you that you persist with the attacks.

The Lions didn't have a choice about keeping him to his contract if he refused to go. It's not loyalty if you're bound by rules to do that bare minimum.

Pressuring a player who didn't want to leave into approving a trade is not what I'd consider loyalty to the player. Loyalty would usually suggest giving the player every opportunity to succeed in their preferred environment. In Witherden's case, his preferred environment was obviously us, but we're there telling him he had no chance to succeed here and his best bet is to move on.
Please play the ball and not the man!!!
Nothing in his post was reflecting on you as a person.

Rubbish.
The Lions were up front and honest with him. They could have said nothing to him at all & kept him to his contract which would have almost killed off his career playing in the seconds permanently. Instead he is now playing at the highest level (well at least some of the time) instead of VFL.

He went back to what I said when Alex moved on to the Eagles and questioned it as if I had a different slant to now...which I do not. He didnt want to go but he didnt want to play seconds more so he looked at his options. There was zero pressure..it was pure honesty about his playing prospects at the club.

I'm putting it out there that I quite enjoy McIvor's posts. He has forthright opinions that most don't agree with but he has reasons and sticks to his guns. I think he's been bullied a bit . So I'm sticking up for him.

As far as Witherden goes I couldn't wait to get rid of him after we put him on a contract well in excess of his abilities. Whatever really happened I don't know ,but he had every right to make the Lions honor the contract and it spoke volumes for him as a person that he moved on in line with the club's wishes and tried his best somewhere else. I was really hoping he could cement a spot there.

We more than made up for Crisp when we gave you two first rounders for Beams on the way back.
I do love steak knives though... Absolute gun!

I’m not playing the man.

I was trying to point out what you posted earlier today that the Lions treated Alex fairly, was very different to what you were posting back then.

I certainly don't intend to mansplain or directly attack individuals - as others have said, there is room for different views on here and we both certainly have different perspectives. I do think you are going a bit over the top in your call to drop McStay for being disloyal.

But, probably shouldn't have said you made the Bailey thing up - but I don't think it is a very credible rumour.

The Lions were very much not keen on paying someone at senior level wages for someone stuck in the reserves.

But sure, goodness of their hearts lead to them offloading him. :D
