Dev has played 22 games. It is worth noting that from his draft year there were 65 players picked. 15 of the players picked before him have played more games thus far and one the same. 10 players picked after him have played more games, two of which are K. Coleman and J.Prior.

I think any player drafted to a consistent top four team, which we have been of late, is gong to be doing very well to get much more game time than that. Especially when you consider that in general our list has been one of the healthiest in the comp.

I like Dev and I think he has a decent career ahead of him. I see a role for him in our setup given some players are ageing in roles he could play and others are yet to fully cement themselves. His disposal is still not always the cleanest (I have him a fair way in front of TBez in this regard though) and I don't think we can have too many guys like that in at once. I see the argument for replacing Lyons with Dev and could go either way. We are sacrificing a bit with Lyons ability to cover off on transition but his ball use is better (at present) going forward.

How would you get him into the 22? At who’s expense?
Currently instead of Robbo. In past weeks at the expense of Tunstil, Terry and Sharpe. Maybe even Ah Chee or Prior.

If he had been playing for much of the year there may not have been a need for Matho.

What had Robertson done to demand a spot in the team? People making out as if he has dominated and then been dropped.
I agree with that. He's promising but no better than two or three others trying for a spot.

I'd like to see him dominate a game a bit as Terry and Mathieson have done.

He seems incredibly highly rated by many on this forum on anything I've ever seen of him.

Robertson will play his best footy when he's added a few extra kg' to his frame. He's just one of those blokes that will take a bit to get his skillset and physique to match. Once he does though... best 22.
That's one thing I have against him. He just doesn't seem strong enough physically for that inside mid role.

If he can build up a bit then we might find out whether he's good enough.

I'm in the sceptical camp.

I guess we'll know more if he stays at the Lions post this year.

But the thing is he can’t play the roles that Ah Chee and Prior especially can play… and to a lesser extent Tunstill and Sharp. He doesn’t play wing. He is an inside mid… this means he unfortunately has to wait his turn

Dev is an inside midfielder in the mould of Clayton Oliver. They both look a bit unglamorous but are deceptively quick and hard at the ball. Disposal is average. He is not a forward flanker or a wing. How do you think Oliver would go if made to play in those roles? Probably not much better than Dev. To those who are prepared to see him prosper at a competitor I ask who else on our roster you see playing as a permanent midfielder to replace Lyons and Zorko in 2 years?

The thing is Dev did play a variety of roles for us last year and acquitted himself quite well. If we have a look back at our best 22 suggestions from late last year and early this year I suggest most had him somewhere in the 22. There seemed to be a plan to get him up to 50 games nice and quickly, regardless of position. That hasn't been the case this year.

This could be for a number of reasons. The most likely imho is that the club has backed Clugga, Rayner, Berry and Bailey to take the next step and become first string mids. This hasn't been overly successful unfortunately, at least not as yet, and has been compounded by the injuries of Zorko and the drop off of Lyons.

There has also been a bit of a policy this year, and we have heard coaching staff themselves in the last few weeks, of picking like for like on almost every occasion when a spot becomes available. I'm not sure I agree with that myself especially when a player like Dev has shown an ability to play forward, wing and inside mid. I had a look back at his stats from last year and he averaged just over 13 disposals and 4 tackles over 16 games. That's actually a bit better than Ah Chee, Jerry and Prior last year, who also played various positions.

I know Lyons is the flavour of the month as far as players who should be dropped but got some credits in the bank- was nearly all Australian last year.
I think the credits in the bank ran out just after the bye. Many including myself thought he was performing poorly for the first half of the season and hoped the bye would help freshen him up, unfortunately it’s been the same issues.

That goes a long way with him getting a game!!! ;)

Dev is rated as you suggest he isn't.

Simply put, he just needs to focus on playing the best footy he can each week in the 2's and keep improving on the things he lacks as detailed by his coach's week after week after week.

I like Dev as well and do think he has potential as a regular player in our best 22. That said, he has to wait/earn his turn or ask to be traded. If i were him, I would stay and persist. Resilience is an important make up in an AFL footballer as well. Fingers crossed he gets there.

You would have thought Dev's best chance to get into the side and play that inside mid role that he is best suited for was last round v the Giants... instead they went for Matho. I went and had a look at their profile on the club website.

Dev- 185cm, 85kg.
Matho- 186cm, 86kg.

The reasoning can't be that Matho is a bigger body, he must have some issues he needs to work on, I didn't watch the last reserves game, did Dev play as a pure inside mid?

Matho is definitely a stronger body and has been more consistent in the 2’s.
Have heard a lot of the players comment on how strong the beast is.
And for the game against GWS Matho was brought in as a purely mid role to help in an area we had been clearly struggling.
But he will need to continue to play well because he will be first out if he doesn’t keep it up.
If Dev continues to play well in the 2’s as he did as a mid last week it could be him who replaces Matho if and when required.

Weights of footballers on any website are never correct
