Jon Ralph said we are on the lookout for a mature forward and mentioned Walker and Gunston but believes Buddy is no chance.

I think I’ll put my money on Buddy being at the Lions next season

Would make sense given that we have little tall forward depth (Fullerton and Smith don't seem ready yet).
I would back Fort to take McStay's slot next year and put Omac into a ruck/forward role. Nobody seems to be able to match up on Oscar effectively for his limited forward minutes and Fort is a pretty reliable shot on goal for a ruckman.

Wasn't sure where to put this but found Alastair Lynch's comments on our finals chances rather pointed:

"There just seems to be a missing piece. Anyone in that forward line can rip you apart on their day, but I think maybe that missing piece is that real blue-collar guy that when it‘s not going his way, he’s got the grit to still do a reasonable amount to crash packs, apply pressures and all the boring things. It’s a bit ‘all or nothing’, which is a bit harsh, but they just need a bit more to be in that conversation with the absolute top."

I kind of got the feeling he was taking aim at McStay, just my take on it. When you look at who can bring the score board pain in the chart below:

Eric seems a bit of a standout as needing to be that blue collar guy to play a role in that forward half (I'm giving Hipwood a hall pass for his recovery, same with Cam who has also been played more down the ground if I'm not mistaken).

If Lynch thinks that's our Achilles Heal what are we to do to fix things for the finals and beyond?

I think he taking aim at all our 3 talls.. Before Hippy did his ACL last year he did start hit packs more.

Jono Brown also said something along the lines our forwards all think they have to kick 2-3 themselves. Not doing the team thing as much

The old argument a champion team beats a team of champions.
We have many exciting talented guys who can be hot for 5 mins and then not seen the rest of the game.

Over this year I think Neale, Starc and Coleman been consistent week in and week out.
Berry, Ah Chee, Linc, Answerth and Zorko had only a couple of poor games
Charlie been good the second half of the year. Where the first few rounds was on or off.
Opposite of Joe was good before injured and now hot or cold.

After that I think everyone been Hot or Cold. Which means we can end up carrying too many, most carrying injuries as well.

I think it's a bit simplistic to say one guy should be doing the donkey work. All three of the talls should be crashing packs when it's their turn and we want anyone playing forward to apply ground pressure. I was pleased to hear Eric say that the forwards accepted some responsibility for the second half of the Richmond loss because, as much as our intensity dropped and our ball movement collapsed, the game could have been won if we were able to halve more aerial contests and trap the ball forward.

But it seems to me that we play our best footy when we don't kick long down the line and we don't "live in the contest" (to use a shitty football term). I think our forwards are best suited to quick ball movement and we have the half back and midfield players who can either kick or run the ball through zones. Strategically setting up to play straight lines down the boundary will fail in the finals because our forwards aren't great at making that contest and our mids have proven to be slightly below elite in contest. So I'd rather see us take the risk of playing angle changing, line breaking footy and let our agile, quick forward line go to work in space.

if you look at the first halves against the blues and tigers.
We kicked to guys with space and over the top.
Was also helped by some poor disposal and defensive marking from both teams
When teams actually switch back on and pressure us. We go for the panic kick into forward 50 more and more.
Players seem not to make space or covered. We seem to worry about the short kick to make angles and just dump kick more.
If you look at our forwards no one really a pack smasher. Joe, Charlie and Hippy prefer it our front or go for a miracle mark over the top.
Dan good contested pack mark although he is not going to split it same as Oscar. More stand ground and take it
Linc and Rayner float in from the side.
So often we get out marked and the ball flows out. Also often we have 2-3 go for the same ball as well.

I think we need to learn to play with pressure more. games flow on and off. Just bring the ball to ground not mark it.
Wonder sometimes we lack some on field leaders as well.

In a perfect world yes but to call his thoughts 'simplistic' may not be born out within our current list structure. I would rather we didn't expect Joe to use his body as a battering ram, as he has know shoulder issues and is our second best at getting the score on the board.

I was interested to hear Alastair thought we need a specific type of individual to do the "donkey work" when required, as you put it.

AL: "I think maybe that missing piece is that real blue-collar guy that when it‘s not going his way, he’s got the grit to still do a reasonable amount to crash packs, apply pressures and all the boring things."

A Jack Darling type, something he believes we are missing.

That puewlt.defenaive role.forward that stays down on the ground and watches everyone else jump for it is definitely a need. The thing is we don't need a new player to so it we just need our smalls to stop going for as many marks.

But it's hard to tell guys of the overhead marking quality like McCarthy, Rayner and Cameron to stay on the ground.

Cameron is a great leading forward but struggles against taller defenders from what I’ve seen at VFL level Lohmann is actually quite a good over head mark.
Billy Elliott would have been nice but he’s now signed at the Magpies

Zurharr would be a good get by seems likely to be at Essendon next year

Rayner plays the Zurhaar role, not the type we need IMO.

Haven’t seen any quote or previous conversation but yes please I’ll take him. Couldn’t care less who he plays like, if we get a player in who’s in our top 22, it has to be for the better.
I don't think he would be much of an upgrade on Rayner and IMO Rayner has a bigger upside.

I like Zurhaar, I think he has a good amount of mongrel and desire for the contest. Not sure what his tank is like to make a proper move into the midfield but if we projected he could do that I think he would be a much better get then De Goey.

Here are their averages:

That said, I always thought Zurhaar was touted as the next North Melbourne captain. Find it hard to believe North will let him go.

He's out of contract this year, but expect him to re-sign or he'll stay in melbourne with another club.

If Dunkley comes that’s the end of hope of dev/Matho and lyons. I don’t see it happening as we need picks for Ashcroft and Fletcher. Also his girlfriend plays for the Adelaide thunderbirds so probably too far away.

Would definitely be keen. Mentioned a couple of months ago about his sister playing netball up here, so I’m not sure whether that’s just journos joining the dots in regards to a possible link here or whether there’s something in it.

ANOTHER CLUB IN DUNKLEY CHASE

BRISBANE is among the clubs with interest in out-of-contract Western Bulldogs midfielder Josh Dunkley, who is deciding on his future.

A call from Dunkley isn't expected before the end of the Dogs' season, as the Lions, Port Adelaide and Essendon show interest in the ball-getting premiership player.

Inside Trading revealed the Power's interest in the 25-year-old last month, while the Bombers have continued to track Dunkley closely since his attempted trade to Tullamarine at the end of 2020.

The Lions are also understood to be in the mix, with Dunkley having a link in the state where his sister Lara plays netball for the Queensland Firebirds.

The Bulldogs are keen to retain the 2016 flag winner, with AFL.com.au reporting in July of the Dogs' long-term contract offer in front of Dunkley. They have been keen to sign Dunkley for some time, with his signature the remaining piece in a year of important re-signings for the club.

Dunkley has played 20 games for the Dogs this season and averaged 25 disposals and booted 17 goals in a strong campaign. He is a year away from being a free agent, so would need to be traded if he decided to leave the Bulldogs. – Callum Twomey

He would be PERFECT. Not sure how we come up with assets to trade for him though with the picks required for Father Son selections.
