I don't see any gouging in the footage.

Oliver leans over him and forcibly pins his head pinned to the ground with his forearm. He retaliates by putting his hand onto the right side of Oliver's face and trying to push his head away.

The fingers don't go into his left eye, and nowhere near his bloodied left eye.
Yep and Oliver does what he always does - whinges to the umpire after being lippy and starting s#it.

You do not push someones head away by scraping your fingers across their eyes.. You do it by pushing away.. Lets call a spade a spade here. Oliver clearly squeezes his eye closed in the process and moves it away - after the incident its clear Oliver understood the intention and made clear motions suggesting eye gouging. I have no like/dislike for either but thats as clear a case of intention eye gouging as you will see. Oliver was lucky he closed his eye in the process.

Not sure we have seen all the vision of the incident.
AFL: Lions star in hot water over apparent eye-gouge

More like fingers scraped across the cheek at first look
Oliver did react instantly so maybe a finger got near his eye
An element of plausible deniability may see tribunal leniency

Worst premiership defence ever?

I know Bulldogs 2017 missed the 8 but theirs was a "miracle" flag.

Richmond fell off a cliff last year but almost became irrelevant by mid season and also had already completed a dynasty.

Hawthorn 2016 straight sets but an old list at the end of the road.

Melbourne were 10-0 with a list in their peak age profile, that people declared unbeatable at that time. Getting finals in Melbourne against interstate teams unlike their flag year. It's a choke that has no comparison.

I'm not proud of it, in April I was the first to remind the ravers on here of 2008, and Melbs were NO CERTAINTIES.
Well okay, I am proud of it. :)

Oliver's right eye was the result of an incident last week.

Though this looks like a hand to the right eye also - also interesting that Oliver pointed it out to the umpire, but he'll likely will go the players code and nothing happened

The Berry eye gouging would absolutely be a suspension in the home and away season imo. It'll just come down to whether it's one of those incidents that they let go through to the keeper simply because it's finals ala the Cotchin hit on Shiel from the 2017 Prelim.
Hawkins would get a week and the offending finger chopped off.

Going back... 2008 Hawks beat the unbeatable in Geelong before missing the 8 by 6 points.
Richmond in 2021 was a really big drop off and they had a better list in 2021 then they did in 2022.

Before that you are going back a bit. Croms in 98 won the flag from 5th, and then in 1999 were poor with an 8W14L record finishing 13/16.
1993 the Bombers finish top of the ladder by percentage, smash Carlton by 44 in the GF, then in 1994 finish 10/15.
