With Lyons on the decline, we need another Gold Coast steal for the media to slam them about over the next few years. Bowes fits that bill perfectly.

Additional quotes from Gunston in this article. Geez if he doesn’t come after speaking like this it would be quite the turn around.

Hawks or Lions? Gunston close to free agency decision

Hawthorn great Jack Gunston says he is drawn to a move to Brisbane Lions regardless of whether Chris Fagan continues as coach of the club or not.

The triple-premiership Hawthorn forward says he will decide over the next week whether to make the move to a third club to bolster the Lions’ premiership tilt.

Brisbane wants Gunston, 31, to replace Dan McStay as a mobile marking target in addition to potential recruit Western Bulldogs’ midfielder Josh Dunkley.

Fagan has stepped aside from the senior coaching role for the time being to participate in the league’s investigation into the alleged mistreatment of Hawthorn indigenous players.

Gunston, who kicked 17 goals in his last five games for the Hawks in 2022, said his connection with Fagan from Hawthorn was only one factor in his call.

“What appeals to me is there is a strong Hawthorn connection,” Gunston said.

“Fages’, Cam Bruce is an assistant coach and ‘Hodgey’ (Luke Hodge) and ‘Birch’ (Grant Birchall have done it before (played at Brisbane).

“I have obviously had a lot of chats with those guys.

“’Fages’ is obviously going through a tough time at the moment, and hopefully he is still coach of the Brisbane Lions.

“But if I do choose to go there it isn’t resting on ‘Fages’ being the coach or not.”

Gunston, who started his career at Adelaide, said he was still “working through the contacts” from both clubs.

He said the allegations relating to Fagan and Alastair Clarkson’s time at Hawthorn, and the reported mistreatment of Hawthorn First Nations’ players, was a total surprise.

“It was a complete shock to me, and my dealings with Fages and Clarko have always been really positive,” he said.

“They have always been for what is best for me, and that is what I have experienced in my time at the Hawthorn footy club.

“It was a shock to me like it was for many of the Hawthorn players, and hopefully it can all sort itself out.”

Gunston said he had not yet put a line through the Hawks, but was excited by the prospect of joining Brisbane’s premiership push next year.

“They have got a really strong list and making a preliminary final and have got a lot of great players and a lot of young talent and that is obviously one of the appealing factors there,” he said.

Gunston said he came back too early form an ankle injury this year but was otherwise grateful for the patience Hawthorn had shown in recent weeks as he has mourned the loss of his father, Ray.

“The Hawthorn footy club has been awesome to me. They’ve given me the time and the space to make a call, obviously a lot of challenges this year for myself and my family,” he said.

“We are making the right call together and what’s going to be best going forward.

“Is it the change of lifestyle that we need and what’s best for my family going forward?”

Ahaha, indeed :)

Also, the GC could be seen as a backdoor to the Lions as it were :p

Every club would be interested in the Bowes deal. I don't want to get my hopes up and then hear he wants to go to Geelong lol

I guess we’ve gotta get him to choose us. Pretty simple

Brisbane-bound midfielder Josh Dunkley says he is confident Chris Fagan will be his coach at the Lions next year as he denied a culture issue was at play in his second trade request in two years.
Dunkley will move to Brisbane if the Lions can broker a trade with the Western Bulldogs, but says after 18 goals in his outstanding 2022 season he is prepared to play mid-forward in an onball unit that includes Lachie Neale and Hugh McCluggage.

The Herald Sun revealed last week Dunkley would sign a six-year deal worth $750,000 per year, and Dunkley said he had genuinely been unsure about his decision until last Monday when he officially asked for a trade.

He told the Herald Sun at the TAB Spring Racing launch that while Fagan could not go into details about the accusations from First Nations players about conduct in his time at Hawthorn, Dunkley believes will would coach the Lions next year.

“It was a tough decision and something I had to think about a lot,” he said of his trade request.

“Weighing up my life here (in Melbourne) and in Adelaide with my partner Tippah and my life in Brisbane as well. So at the end of the day I feel like it’s a good lifestyle decision and they have an exciting list up there.

“Fages was really good. He is really disappointed and everyone knows that. It’s been on the public record that he has been struggling with it, but he’s a great person and we didn’t talk too much about it. He just wanted to reassure me that he feels like he hasn’t done too much wrong and with the situation that is going on, it’s hard to talk about.

“It definitely didn’t make me second guess. Everyone has backed him in and all the news reports have backed him in, and from what I have had to do with him in such little time he’s such a good human being and he’s really cared for me, and I am looking forward to that relationship and getting up and meeting him.”

Treloar’s great mate Adam Treloar’s partner Kim Ravaillion is in Brisbane playing Super Netball, and he is likely to join her once his AFL career is finished.
It means that while it will be difficult for Dunkley to leave his best friend, they will be reunited in Queensland in coming years, with the 25-year-old adamant the decision was based around lifestyle.
His partner Tippah plays Super Netball with Adelaide and while all contracts in the league are up at the end of next year, she loves the exciting young side she is playing with.
But in the long-term they will settle in Queensland, with 2016 premiership player Dunkley describing it as an offer too good to refuse.
Dunkley asked for a trade to Essendon at the end of 2020 amid the turbulent finish to the club’s hub experience in Queensland, but is adamant the Dogs culture is sound.
It is no secret the ultra-professional Dunkley led the charge on that front at the Dogs, but he said his relationship with coach Luke Beveridge was good.
“I think that was never an issue. It was more for me the on-field stuff and my role and the lifestyle. I feel like I can improve my footy again in the team up there. The culture stuff never came into my decision making.
“The culture is really good at the (Bulldogs) footy club. The boys are really close
“This year has been the best year out of all of them. It was a good step in the right direction after the grand final, so there is no bad blood.
“Bevo was really good to speak to on the phone. We have had a great relationship from day one and before I was drafted he spoke to me about how much I can be a role model and leader, so Bevo has been great for me and he’s like a father figure.
“I said to Bevo it was more of a lifestyle choice. He backed it in and said he completely understands the long-term deal was appealing.”

Coupla years ago, as part of the Pies salary dump, I would have loved to have got Trealor. can you imagine a midfield of him, Lachie and Dunkley?

Got to appeal to that inner Queenslander. Being along Wally Lewis to talk about how QLD spirit never dies.

I'm going to be heartbroken if we don't get this done. I'm already emotionally invested

Really makes sense for him to make the switch. Hawthorne are likely too far off their window for him, Brisbane is where he needs to be to stand a shot in the next couple of years.

Are we a strong enough club to take a gamble on Sydney Stack? Extremely talented. Geelong probably have the strongest club culture in the league bar potentially Sydney and that paid dividends in getting Stengle, an extremely talented player who was struggling off field. They turned him into an AA. Stack on pure talent would be among the top of the league but his dedication and some off field baggage have held him back. Some may say Stack is already at a strong club in Richmond who haven't got the best out of him but Stengle was also at the Tigers before joining the Crows and then the Cats.

Just a thought, been some talk that Richmond may not offer Stack a contract and I think we could do worse than pick him up as a DFA.

Great minds, I nearly posted re Sydney Stack earlier today but thought nah probably too much baggage.

I'm unsure on the correct words to use - 'apparently' or 'rumours' but when I use these, its basically that I have heard from someone on the inside, or connected to someone on the inside that XYZ is the case. I can't just outright say who told me what, as I would breach their confidence.
I'd go with "rumours", but everyone assumes it's media reported unless specified otherwise. :thumbsu:

Speaking of delisted free agents, I'd pick up Narkle as depth. I could see him playing games for us. He'd likely look for a club where he would be guaranteed more game time but you never know. We are an extremely appealing club to join at the moment and he may just be convinced. Dunstan chose to join the Demons in spite of their stacked midfield for example. Players are drawn to good, successful clubs.

If our off season consists of -

Josh Dunkley
Jack Gunston
Jack Bowes
Will Ashcroft
Jaspa Fletcher
Riley Greene
Narkle/Stack

It would easily be our strongest list in Fages time here even in spite of losing McStay, Robinson, Gardiner, T.Berry ect.

I only post here and really only recently discovered this board and these discussions. I am a St Kilda supporter (long suffering) but have been involved in QLD footy for decades, including the Lions/Bears and while many may disagree or whatever, I am pretty well connected with a few of the players, coaches and also folks with reasonable knowledge about what is happening in clubland in QLD as well, who often are well connected with the Lions.

So while I am a Saints supporter, I have an interest in QLD footy, like to see the Lions do well and especially like to see more QLDers on AFL lists, so have a very strong interest in both the Suns and Lions academies - though more insight and familiarity with the Lions

Happy to take the feedback that you guys aren't interested in what I have heard, so happy to tone that down.

I was 100% on Dunkley, you will soon see I'm right about Fletcher and I wouldn't be surprised if Rayner's name comes up (not via a journo, but a proper footy person). If you check my history, you will see my comments on Lester, McFayden and others and I imagine they will all be proven correct. I'm also the person that brought attention to the interest in Greene.

Other examples of inside knowledge are that several of the VFL top ups have signed with Williamstown. The likes of Colenso, Triffit etc will be playing VFL against the Lions next year. Hardly groundbreaking news, but its not out there yet - but it will be in time. Think Lions will find it hard to sign mature age top ups in 2023 unless something changes in how they are treated.

Hey man, I went Greene first. Don't make me get BRAB to go Nerang on you.

We’re going to need some KPD depth coming in that’s for sure.

If we did get rid of Gardiner, the core of Payne, Adams and Andrews is still very good. The problem is, what if one of them go down?

Wouldn't be opposed to Arnold and Greene from the VFL or even Buzza as depth. Buzza wouldn't be a quality player at AFL level, but in a full time system and with the right players around him I think he could plug a hole if needed in a similar way Eagles did for us.
