Autopsy Round 3, 2023: St.Kilda v Essendon *150 YEARS OF THE SAINTS*

We looked like we were trying to play catch up footy early in the last.
True. But after chasing all night just to get there, it was a bridge too far For them.
It was worrying for a while no doubt, but we found another gear. As the commentators said - it was mature stuff.

I’d still prefer to start fast every time rather than needing a late charge to get over the line.

Can anyone who followed the media yesterday say if Stan Alves and any of his players were involved?

All the noise has been about the first Lyon era, but the 95-98 era was amazing too and deserved more than a loser's medal in one GF and a couple of Brownlows.
Loewe was from that period. He was there.

Hang on Byrnes ran 17.8km today.

That would be equal to the third biggest running game EVER RECORDED. Territory only previously reached by Tom Scully.

He's using his strength!

16.3km from 18yo Pou an outstanding effort as well.

We all thought Ratts was the problem in recent years, but it turns out it was in fact Max King!

Since his debut we’ve won all 6 games when he’s missed, whereas when he plays, our winning percentage plummets to 48.3%.

Ratts stiff. Turns out all he had to do was drop Max.

Probably due to our inability to look at any other option. I feel like this period might be a blessing in disguise. We don’t trust anyone else when he’s there. This shows them that a spread of goals is better. When King plays we lose if he has the yips otherwise.

Re-watching the game now and the chirp from Langford in the lead up... Pretty pathetic for them to come out the way they did with that said.

“I think they booked us in for a win,” Langford said. “They’re 2-0 and we are 2-0. We are going to build right throughout this week, and we’re going to come out nice and hot against them.”

****ing gee whiz champion, pretty sure we kicked the first 5 goals and our depleted forward line with spearhead forward aka. natural winger or mid Mitch Owens was going harder at the ball than anyone on your team. Had the better of Ridley a few times 1-on-1, crashed packs as a 19 year old, took contested balls right out of the hands of "A grade midfielder" Darcy Parish, scrapped away with multiple defenders when outnumbered and often won. I'd say they poked the bear/gigantic teenage beast in Owens and got bullied. The Mitch Owens love affair grows though.

Yeah, we were in M1 and it was going off.
I was in the same bay.

I was getting pissed off at the Essendon supporters in the standing bay though. On reflection I shouldn't have got as worked up over it.

it's interesting you see it as a pot shot, did you watch his game today?

Can you see him playing as being helpful to our side in any way based on his current form at VFL level?

And before you say he'd be a handy marking option in the forward line I'd point out Ross has reminded us a few times already with media comments that you play the way you train, so I can't see Sharman playing in defence for Sandy and then being selected by Lyon to play in a forward line, that would be completely contradictory to his firmest of coaching beliefs.

So not taking pot shots, just calling it as I see and as it turns out I've been right about him being way off the pace.
Got to agree with this one. Sharman played 3 good games 2 years ago. He is a flash in the pan and just isn't very good.

You would think that with our injuries in the forward half this would have been his year to grab a spot. Unfortunately he can't and therefore I fully expect him to get delisted.

And now for some Sunday Night Trivia ( acknowledgement to Andrew Gaze)…
at the end of the round celebrating our 150 years, our percentage is….150 (.3).
Hows that for synchronicity?

Are there any older members suffering flashbacks to the last buildup we had under Ross? Isn't it amazing how much this game affects us? I think I had PTSD after Ross left but now that he's back the healing is starting. And 3 - 0 doesn't hurt!!!!! ¶:Þ
Unfortunately, I got a warning for saying something innocuous on the Essendon board otherwise I would have put a like reaction to the above.

Yeah I thought it was great and I was in M3. They got loud as you'd expect coming back and getting level. Then we absolutely gave it back to them as we kicked 5 in a row again. Footy banter is the best. Ya got to take a bit to give a bit. Perhaps though my age sees that through a different lense as a veteran of Windy Hill, Arden St and of course Vic Park. If we don't want segregated supporters then you have to live with opposition. For mine, from where where we were behind the middle of the goals the atmosphere was electric and that was because of the two groups of supporters.

I've been going for 45 years and an official member for 32 years (darn the lost members records before 1991) and I'm struggling to remember a better atmosphere at a home and away game but perhaps it's tinged with the emotion of what the game meant in history.

In any case we don't get to play in many massive games like that so breathe it in and enjoy it. We bloody deserve it.
