Standard of Umpiring - Suggestions for change

I’ve definitely seen it worse, but it felt like most of the 50/50 Essendon free kicks were called and most 50/50 Collingwood free kicks were let slide. That can happen so no real complaints aside from the push in the back on Bo. That one was shit and a momentum killer.

It wasn't even the terribly lopsided free kick count that was the issue

It was the absolutely insane level of inconsistency across 4 quarters. It was diabolical
agree, though the free kick count also reflects this inconsistency, as it was all one way. McGrath not disposing of the ball in front of goal when McCreery tackled him in the last was a non-call, whilst Crisp is charged and kicks the ball off the side of his boot... HTB. I could literally name 6 - 8 instances like this, including marks not being paid vs paid to bombers. At least they used to come out and admit errors in the past. Watch the radio silence on yesterday's officiating now though.... whilst a pies win makes it even easier to sweep under the rug

I thought the umpiring was poor yesterday.

Umpire 4 I thought was very biased in his interpretations.

Just watched a replay of the last quarter and when Draper got a free kick that would have put Essendon back in front,Brian Taylor actually said the umpires have been superb today. What a dick he is.Does he actually watch the game while he’s calling it?
Commentators where calling the Game from the Essendon Cheersquad

The cherry on top was Jake Stringer's goal after the ball up following his trying to fend 3 players and not being called for holding the ball (following the non-call against Draper for a similar passage of play in the middle).

The most prominent areas of contention/inconsistency are holding the ball and marking contests. Too many umpires vacillate between 'it came out in the tackle' and 'didn't have prior', in the process failing to reward the tackler. In terms of marking contests, certain players get more favourable treatment and it's almost as if the umpire is just waiting for an excuse to pay a free (see McKay/Curnow in the Good Friday game).

Then you’re the one out of 50,000 pies fans at the game that felt that way. Bronx cheers in the last quarter when we finally got a call. And umpires booed off the ground, despite the win. Free kick count doesn’t lie… 19-10 Bombers way

Brad Scott was extremely vocal in his support / protection of umpires whilst being the football director, and they are tipping their hats to him in appreciation it seems.

When they Paid the Draper one in the last I felt like Jumping the Fence and Decking the Scumps

At the match i thought the umpiring was very good. Consistency was there and cant remember many controversial decisions

What Game did you Watch as I must of been watching a Different Game then you watched

Media Hates Collingwood like the AFL and AFL House

Here's a brief selection of newspaper articles about umpires from many years ago:

I spend lots of time reading football articles in newspapers from yesteryear, and I've seen many similar stories to these ones. There's probably hardly ever been a time when fans/critics haven't claimed that umpiring was "the worst it's ever been"! If the world's still spinning in 100 years time chances are they'll be saying the same thing! That's football fans for you.

You missed some mind blowing non decisions (in addition to Draper getting two extremely soft frees right in front of goals).

McGrath, Draper and some other dude had instances of clear cut prior, multiple steps, dropping the ball while tackled and nothing was called. It wasn’t even at the bottom of a pack, it was in plain sight.
Like almost always when i watched the replay today the decisions i thought may have been wrong were mostly me being wrong. My view now it was very well umpired and the umps let it go a bit in the style of finals.

At the game the decsion i questioned most was Drapers mark in the 1st Q. Thought he didnt hold it. He didnt, it was Darcy getting him high and a free. I am not really amazed that fans of their own game are terrible judges of umpiring and this thread backs that very well.

Think media and the AFL love Collingwood Dave. Us being successful is their cash cow.

Posted my review in the post game thread before seeing this thread.
Spot on, some notes relevant to your post:

Ess free – In the back, McCreery tackling, initial tackle seemed fine but just final position in the back, but barely. 50/50 “but stiff there” according to JB.

Totals:
Coll
Fair frees: 9
50/50 frees: 1
50/50 not paid: 5
Missed: 3 (incl. missed 50m)

Ess
Fair frees: 16
50/50 frees: 4
50/50 not paid: 3
Missed: 0

Collingwood need to lodge an official way to look into the state of umpiring. Its borderline corrupt at the moment.

Umpires make mistakes just like players. As a fan you have an interest in the match which creates bais. Times when your team gets the short end, when i'ss the ther way around it simply does not register this is human nature.

It's a vrey hard game to umpire. The Camera never has the same view as the umpires. Who do not have slow mo replays.

People need to get over themselves and reflect for moment.

Snowflake, it was deliberate... Two weeks in a row.

Tell me with a straight face the umpire in front of Murphy made a mistake but paid Moore's high contact...

Terrible umpiring. That was the most one sided umpiring I’ve ever seen, especially in the last quarter. You’d swear we were playing against four extra men tonight, that’s how bad it was.

The commentators said Adelaide had two spare behind the ball and this is the image that popped into my head

I actually didn't think umpiring could get worse but woweee tonight was a new benchmark.

Pretty much every category of free kick we were shafted.

Somehow they saw our infringements for high contact but missed all theirs. The Murphy smash to the face was about as obvious as you can get.

The interpretation annoying me the most is insufficient intent to keep the ball in play. I see plenty of players with zero intent to keep the ball in, who just walk the ball over the boundary line or handball it straight over. Yet De Goey will get pinged when kicking long out of a pack.
