After reading the past few pages around academy kids and getting a shafting on the best available talent… How might we increase our ability to recruit the best, develop the best talent? Can we identify talent over east in junior leagues and align to our academies before anyone else gets a hold?

If Vic has the biggest talent pools and academies aligned then we are fighting a losing battle from the get go. Is that the case? Are the odds staked in their favour or am I just copping a whinge

Due to the current matching bids rules, unless you are a Northern club, academies are pretty much a waste of time and money.

Get the top U16 players families who would qualify under NGA rules to move to WA before they turn 16 would be the only way to do it, except we still can't match on those players before pick 40....

In other words we are at a detriment to every other club bar fremantle who then you have port and the crows slightly less screwed over than us, then probably all the vic teams bar geelong with GWS and GC on a par (different benefits balancing each other out) and then geelong, swans and lions with the highest levels of benefits (swans and lions having full academy benefits, FS and in established sides) (geelong with the only true home advantage in Vic, plus a lot of off the books benefits to players (all AFAIK accepted by the AFL) whilst also having the combined city + country feel all in one.

I am expecting to see Bailey Williams's contract extension announced soon. He is one of the very few highlights in 2023.

Pity Waterman missed out on the weekend, I think his real option to stay on the list is to turn himself into the Hurn replacement down back. With Maric recruited and a possible free drop with Georgiades, I see Jake as a better back pocket assuming he wants to play seniors and not rot in the WAFL. That said, he might just be given a 1 to 2 year extension as we are light on for talent and he is solid and Maric will need a couple of years to develop.

Petruccelle is a puzzling one - he pops up every now and again to say he might be OK but then has patches that frustrate me.

Nothing I have seen from Foley makes me want to keep him while Witherden has done enough to earn another contract, albeit on modest $$.

LEdwards is contracted for another year and looks depth, and in a competitive Eagles AFL team, he will likely be player 25 to 35 only.

Trew West and Clark are our only other mids aged between 21 and 27 and I cannot see any of the three staying on the list past September this year. That is one reason as to why Shuey might earn a 12 month modest extension. I would offer him $300k which is actually a pretty decent wage compared to his alternatives to football.

In what world could waterman be a back man? Slow, doesn’t read the play at all well, no second efforts or ground ball ability, no aggression, speed or intent to go forward.

Watch any game where he ends up loose man in defence watching the ball go around him because he has no idea where to stand…

Made a good living as a list clogger. Times up.

Playing upright isn't always a bad thing If the player keeps their feet and keeps moving from contest to contest. Probably why he gets to so.many damn contests and makes himself available.

You need players who don't go to the ground easily and Sanders body shape seems to be a contributing factor.

Yeah I'm not saying I wouldn't like him.

He's probably a rd1 starter.

seems very professional

Darling's what 31?Would he have any currency at teams like Melbourne or Collingwood who are each short of a KPF?
I accept he may be too old, that his last 12 or so months haven't been flash & that the difference between his best & worst is substantial, but his best is very good & may be that missing piece for both those teams.

You guys are coming hard for Naughton, very much in his ear trying to get him to jump ship. Have had this confirmed by two separate sources.
No idea outside of pick 1 what you could offer the Dogs seeing his contracted until end of 2024 and in our leadership group / slated to take over from Bont when he hangs up the boots.
Would Barass be on the table?

Find that impossible to believe. Simmo said in a press conference WC weren't in a position to chase free agents. So why would they chase Naughton who isnt one

No, but you can have Gaff :)

Start by not making monumental draft stuff ups like taking Chesser before van Rooyen or Johnson.

Started to wonder just how many we could realistically offload at the end of the year. Once you start looking at names, the answer becomes - not as many as we'd like. If you fast forward to the end of the 2025 season, just how many (exclude NGAs) do we need to get off our list in the next 3 off seasons.

I don't think too many would argue with these 14...

Gaff (33), Naitanui (35), Cripps (33), McGovern (33), Rotham (27), West (26), Clark (28), Shuey (35), Trew (23), Darling (33), Foley (26), O'Neil (25), Hurn (38), Winder (23)

Plus massive question marks over another 8...

Petrevski-seton (27), L Edwards (23), Petruccelle (26), Witherden (27), Cole (28), Jamieson (25), H Edwards (25), Waterman (27)

Add another 4 probably barley hanging on, if not finished as well.

Kelly (31), Sheed (30), Hunt (30), Yeo (32)

Its not unrealistic to suggest we need to get rid of almost 8 blokes per year over the next 3 seasons. Whether that's even doable from a list build perspective I don't know. You're not bringing in 24 guys in 3 national drafts. Some savvy low profile free agents to fill our mid 20s age gap may help, otherwise its all looking like a long dark road.

More likely Darcy leaves Freo for Geelong and freo will pass on what they get for him for Naughton.

F**k me, if we give up anything of value for him then we need to seriously fold the club, burn it down, scoop the ashes into a pillow case and then fold that up too
Doubt it would be this year. I think what we do with Pick 1 and 19 are the priority surely. Hopefully the Pieman gets the picks right.

Goss reckons we are into Mr English big time.

If we sign English before he becomes a free agent I think I might actually check out for a few years.

My impotent rage would be all consuming. The amount of stern letters that I wouldn't post, incalculable.

Oh great and powerful King Niz, please don't do me like that.

Simpson has been regularly emphatic that our intention this year is to hit the draft - as recently as the post Adelaide game press conference

The notion that we’d trade for established players like English or Naughton seems fanciful

I don’t know which is going to be worse, watching us play another 10 games of football or enduring all the totally stupid trade rumours for the next 5 months or so

I just don't think you can take anything Simpson really says about list management at face value given how secretive the club is.
I don't think we'd do a trade like that involving our high picks, but at the same time the club has been making some bone-headed moves lately so who really knows what we're capable of.

Yeah agree with that. When he becomes a Free Agent it makes a lot more sense given the other kids we will and have acquired by then, to have a go at getting him.
