ROOS LOOK FOR RUCK BACK-UP

North Melbourne is on the hunt for a ready-made ruckman in the trade period, fearing it is likely to lose 300-game big man Todd Goldstein.

Goldstein, 35 is weighing up a number of options, including an offer to join his former coach Brad Scott at Essendon.

The prospect of any two-year offer would be tempting for Goldstein as the veteran ruckman believes he still has good footy left in him following another consistent season.

Tristan Xerri will go into 2024 as North Melbourne’s No.1 ruckman, but the 24-year-old has yet to play more than 12 games in a season.

Callum Coleman-Jones is a forward-ruck back up, but he missed the back end of the season as he dealt with a concussion issue which the club hopes has all been resolved.

Charlie Comben suffered a horrific leg injury earlier this season but is seen more as a forward rather a ruckman.

It means the Roos has already started scouring the competition in an effort to get ruck back-up relief if Goldstein chooses to depart Arden St.

A decision is expected to come soon.

NORTH OUT FOR YOUTH

Alastair Clarkson will look to youth as he builds his 2024 North Melbourne coaching panel in the wake of several high profile departures.

It is understood the Kangaroos are in the market for good, young assistant coaches with Clarkson and footy boss Todd Viney searching for the right mix.

This follows the departure of Brett Ratten, who took over as interim head coach when Clarkson took his break from the game, with John Blakey and Gavin Brown also leaving the club.

Ratten is looking for a new role in football.

Veteran Liam Shiels, who has an interest in list management once his playing days are over, will almost certainly play on next season.

The three-time Hawk premiership player turns 33 next season, but he was a valuable contributor in a difficult year in his first season at the club.

He played 16 games and finished ninth in the Syd Barker Medal.

Smart move imo.

Younger coaches will be more relatable for the young group, I also think they bring different physical standards than 50+ year olds in Blakey, Ratten and Brown as an example.

DOW SET TO BE ON THE MOVE

Paddy Dow seems destined to find his way to St Kilda as the Blues’ late-season charge gives them trade collateral to get back into the national draft for the second straight year.

Carlton expects Dow to find his way to St Kilda and Zac Fisher to play at Arden Street next year, with both players out of the side but having benefited from recent surges in form.

The Blues have given away their second and third-round picks, having secured Ollie Hollands, Lachie Cowan, VFL Team of the Year member Jaxon Binns and Harry Lemmey in the draft last year as well as summer rookie Alex Cincotta.

Carlton will expect reasonable compensation from the Roos for Fisher given he has two years to run and could secure a five-year deal.

So the Blues could top up their draft hand, then give a future pick to Gold Coast if the Elijah Hollands deal goes through.

The Blues have been keen to hit the draft hard all year but didn’t have much to give up and yet Dow has climbed off the footy scrapheap and Fisher has found form at half back.

Saint to take time

St Kilda’s restricted free agent Jade Gresham could be weeks away from making a call on his future, with three opposition clubs still in play.
Essendon remain Gresham’s likeliest destination if he opts to leave the Saints – and he could yet re-sign – but Richmond and Carlton are other possibilities.

None of the clubs has lodged an official offer, with Gresham prioritising his fit in the team.
The Blues were keen from a long way out, but the re-emergence of Jack Martin, along with the improved form of David Cuningham and Lachie Fogarty, means Gresham is no longer as high a priority.

The Bombers, who have one of the league’s largest war chests, have also pitched a long-term offer to in-demand North Melbourne restricted free agent Ben McKay, but face stiff competition from Hawthorn and Sydney.

Chief executive Craig Vozzo is playing an integral role in the pursuits, along with outgoing list boss Adrian Dodoro. Whichever club McKay chooses, in what is a tight race, is almost certain to trigger first-round compensation, which equates to pick three for the Kangaroos.

The other interesting factor in the timing of McKay’s decision is the AFL Commission will meet next week, when they will consider whether to grant North more assistance to help them be competitive again.

Changes afoot?

The draft and the list-management space could be in for major change in the months ahead.

The new collective bargaining agreement looks increasingly likely to include a provision that first-round draft picks will sign three-year initial contracts, rather than two, in a win for clubs.
The potential move would not only help clubs retain talent from interstate but also delay top draftees commanding huge contracts from their third year – a bugbear for clubs – often before they are fully established.

Separate to the CBA negotiations, the AFL’s player movement manager, ex-Collingwood list boss Ned Guy, recently surveyed clubs on a series of topical matters that could trigger rule tweaks.
Among them would be the ability for clubs to trade salary-cap space for picks, without having to include a player in the deal, which appears to be the next frontier of trading.
Clubs also want the ability to transfer players directly to the rookie list without having to delist them and redraft them, a mechanism they had in 2020 after the AFL slashed playing list sizes.
Another possible change would be mid-season draftees remaining eligible for the rookie list into their fourth season. Current rules state players must be promoted to the primary list after their third season, but mid-season draftees have only 2½ years in that scenario.

You don’t pay a second rounder for a guy playing in the 2s for most of the year.

Moyle from GC is the one. Unfortunately he's contracted, so will cost more then we want to pay.

Why on earth are we offering 4 year contracts to fringe players who are under contract? And no doubt we will trade overs to get him. Please, PLEASE, this cannot be true. If this is coming from clarko, we are truely ****ed.

If true then simply idiotic. :stern look

This is correct, except the Blues are trying to dump his salary.

And if that is the case then a late 3rd will do.... but if they want to keep him which given they have no dropped him so don't think that is the case then we would have to pay up
