Is it that we give them both our firsts (Gresham and natural FRD pick) for 8 and we take Shiel off their books to pay Gresham more? I'd rather have the 2 first round picks.

If the reports of there being no genuine star mids by that point then absolutely we should keep 12/13.

FYI Shiel has a foot injury that is somewhat "persistent".

Essendon wont have him in preseason training until after Christmas. Modified program before that.

Not that it means much, but he's already carrying...

Means the pick we give up for him can be even lower. Good news for us

Ralph seems to think Essendon will get 13 or 19 and Gresham and we will get Shiel. Doesn’t break any of the AFLs rules. Essendon paying Gresh 750k is reasonable with new CBA in his view.

Exactly People are misunderstanding. WE get 13 and Shiel , they get Gresham and part of his salary paid by us. In effect we are paying for his compo pick to be Band 1. Essendon DO NOT get a pick from us. Gresh is a FA remember

The benefit for St.Kilda is we get Greshams salary off the book (he conviently forgets Sheil is on 200k more) and we get a hard running midfielder who was top ten midfielder (before he became a clapped out old injury bust).

Yes that is the benefit to St.Kilda we get a higher salary for a 31 year old and no compo for a Free Agency. Wow what a boon for the mighty Saints.

To be fair, Essendon’s injury management/ strength and conditioning have been borderline negligent for the last few years. So many players go there and end up with chronic injuries. Hopefully, Shiel’s injuries are few and far between if he comes.

If Gresham's contract has run out and he doesn't want to renew it, isn't it already off the books without us needing to take on Shiel or hand back the compensation pick?

We have no walk in backup for Steele, and Shiel is at least an experienced senior midfielder and could easily do what Gresh 2023 has been doing but probably better.

I’m really not sure he can. He certainly can’t play forward. Even if he could, it wouldn’t be for long before he dies of old age.
