Geelong don't want to overplay their hand given North and Hawthorn are able to pick him up in the pre-season draft.

For North he becomes a McKay replacement and Hawthorn chased him prior to him nominating Port.
I hope Cats end up with nothing.

At this point in time, I'd love both Esava & Tom to leave them.

And Ollie Lord has said he has no intentions of coming back to Victoria and Port have said they have no intention of trading him out. So it seems Cats didn't even bother asking him 😆

He might have no choice but go into the pre-season draft or stay at Geelong, where they treat him like a backup player during the season, but Darcy Moore during the trade period.

Geelong is such a collectively irritating footy club. Arrogant, overinflated egos and very pleased with themselves and absolute pricks at the trade table.
They have so many similarities to Sydney in the way in which they're perceived and like people to perceive them.

They're able to install ex-players and administrators within the AFL or the AFL-media (i.e. Ch. 7), they are continually emphasising their 'culture' and use their location as a selling point to potential trade targets, while at the same time being difficult or obstinate in their trade dealings with other clubs.

Much like Brisbane, I'm unsure how Geelong fit all their players under the salary cap.

Hubris has come back to bite them.

Hard to properly comment on without knowing the formula (if there even is one) but they need to base the compensation solely on the player.

Not the deal length, not the deal remuneration, etc. Poor teams with cap room are offering overs to inflate the compensation and bypass trading for players.

I would've thought a fairer system would see a team not know the compensation until at least the offer is made, and after the offer is made it can't be adjusted (ie increased) to alter compensation.

Tldr Gresham end of first round compensation doesn't sit well with me.

Agreed. Basing compensation picks on contract value/length is subject to manipulation. This is an opportunity to use player ratings from accredited outlets. Prima face, Buddy Franklin gets Hawthorn a compensation of pick 19 but McKay gets North Melbourne a compensation of pick 3! No one can reasonably argue that this is justifiable.

Player ratings is just as subjective as any other metric. Player ratings are very different based on the team, style they play and whether they are actually any good.

Hard and fast rules....age, cash and length....are the only metrics that can be used.

Why is everyone so up in arms about compensation?
Otherwise bad clubs just get poorer and the good get better.....without it, FA would be a complete mess.

My point is if Essendon legitimately offered Gresham what he's worth, without being able to manipulate the compensation, it might only spit out an end of second round compensation pick.

Then St Kilda say you know what, we match that because we'd rather you trade us pick 30 than us getting pick 42.
