Are at the stage where electric cars are good value and feasible to use around perth or not yet ?
I’ve had one for the last 6 months and have no regrets, I love it.

Looking to buy a new car. As long time stans will know, I know nothing about cars. Who wants to enlighten me on what I should look for or just tell me what to buy? I already know not to kick the tyres.

Requirements:
  • Automatic
  • Mid-sized (sedan or hatchback)
  • Not an SUV
  • Not a piece of crap

Getting closer - but not quite there. The technology is improving at a significant rate every year, the longer you hold out the better the value in my view. I'm probably going electric around 2028-ish. Consider also a plug-in hybrid for a compromise solution as the spread of electric charging points (and efficiency and speed) still has a way to go before even coming close to matching the availability of petrol.

What's your budget? Have bought cars myself and advised friends and family with all sorts of requirements, I like to think I generally know my shit (or that I'm shit, I guess).

Those who suggested an i30 or Mazda 2/3 are spot on if you're looking for something cheap and decent that fits those four dot points.

Around $35k. My mother has a Mazda 3 and I'm not a fan of it.

Hmm, well that covers most if not all good late model Japanese compacts, but for a medium size car it may be pushing it. You a tall guy? Many complain about just how small a Japanese sedan or hatch often are. I assume you're happy to buy used (I always advise this, a new car loses a third of its value once it leaves the lot, there's always ex-demo and ex-dealer models floating around), so at that budget pretty much anything is within reach.

Can't go wrong with a trusty Toyota Corolla and they actually are half decent nowadays. If you're prepared to push the budget, I also always recommend a Volkswagen Golf - once you go German you don't go back.

Whatever you decide, for the love of god don't get an MG.

Currently driving a 2014 Golf. They are a good car, but I want something with a reversing camera and (ideally) proximity sensors. Otherwise, given I've only done 58 659km I'd keep it.

Thanks for the advice.

You can get a late model Corolla Hybrid for your budget as well. Toyota is always a safe bet and they hold their value, particularly the hybrids.

They’ve also got plenty of small SUV’s available for your price range as well, and most of them are available in a hybrid version.

You can define mid size yourself. Either a Camry or Corolla hybrid. Unlike pure electric vehicles they hold their value exceptionally well, require very little maintenance, get amazing fuel economy and there is no need for worrying about range anxiety or overpaying. But new and be willing to wait. Corolla hybrid hatch would be my choice with your specific precursors. Sedans are becoming ever less popular so the hatch makes even more sense there. Midge range SX in Glacier white. Don't get talked into any extras.

You place your order and make sure they agree and it's on the contract at the retail price with a full tank of fuel, full set of floor and dash mats. It will be boring, people will think you are old or can't drive, but it will be a great car and has all the features you need.

Feels like I see a thousand ******* Tesla's any time I'm on the road so must be feasible to some degree.
In my 6 months I’ve had to use a public charger because I was getting a bit too low for comfort once, and that was purely because I forgot to switch the charger on at home so it didn’t charge overnight

Otherwise 95% of my charging is done at home or at work when I can, I hardly ever get below 60% battery.

Rule of thumb anything japanese (toyota, mitsubishi, mazda, nissan etc) are all reliable no fuss cars. Same with the korean stuff (hyundai and kia).

European cars have a bit more flair but can be hit and miss reliability wise and usually cost a premium. VW arent bad these days and I've looking at them as a possible next car.

A lot will come down to personal preference with looks, entertainment systems and other gadgets.

The modern Golf versions have those bells and whistles.

Funny enough my last Golf (2016 GTI) is my last car without those things, they come standard now.

Also was about to advise this but the waiting list is tremendous. If Trucko can wait then I'd definitely advise going down this route.

Just plug in during off peak hours.

Tore out the undertray from my Scirocco R once and that made me glad I had insurance. That single piece of plastic (exaggerating I know) cost me more than what I earn in a month if I had to pay out of pocket. The Golf R looks nice but I ain't paying $70k for a hatchback, sorry not sorry.

European cars can be broken down into German and non-German though - although I like how some of them look and perform I'd definitely avoid Renault, Citroen, Alfa Romeo etc etc. Although Skoda is one I wouldn't ignore, they are good value for money...

There’s plenty of second hand ones available if you’re happy to pay the mark up.

I was keen on a RAV4 until I found out how long the wait list is, and the second hand prices were ridiculous. Nearly 70k for the trim level I wanted and that wasn’t even the top the range model!

+1 for Corolla Hybrid. Wife has one as her work car / weekender and it's very good, if a little small to be our weekend family car.

You could also get an aftermarket reverse camera and sensors installed on your Golf and keep it, Trucko

The pillar next to my parking bay, repeatedly. I hate reverse parking but there's so many large cars parked on the verge in my street that reversing out of my driveway is a touch dangerous.
Save some money. Cut up some pool noodles and stick em on the pillar!

Camera might help. Proximity sensors can often be a bit useless - if you know it's going to be a tight fit you are often in a situation where you need to be in that 30-40cm zone where the sensor has gone to the solid tone and is no longer telling you anything useful. The sensors are really good for alerting you to the presence of something you didn't know about/see.

People parking all over the street sucks balls.
