No, myopic supporters forget that this is a job for the players and when out of contract they are free to choose their employer and contractural terms just like any other person in this country. Being well remunerated or playing a sport you happen to enjoy doesn’t mean someone surrenders their ability to make a choice.

9 Hawthorn players on Sunday started their careers at other clubs but now play for us - just wondering if they’re all mercenaries also?
Hill is/was a gun. Loved him during our threepeat. He was worth more than we got from Freo, I thought the club could’ve taken a harder stance at the table but clearly put Hill’s interests ahead of ours.
If we got Serong from Freo for massive unders because he was struggling and wanted to play with his brother, then 5 mins later he’s fine to now move back to that state but shuns his nose at Freo and takes the money at West Coast, even though Freo looked after him. I would question his character based on that being the only evidence.
To say that every player moving clubs must be a mercenary is a massive leap.

The fact that some are saying he didn’t want to come to Hawthorn because we were on the way down, is fair enough.

I look at it like, people in the club have worked their arses off and done the heavy lifting, and now we are on the way up he might be interested. That’s just consistent with his actions and decision making throughout his career. The grass is always greener elsewhere and it is 100% about him.

Hill chased the money.

Not only did clubs pay the money but what they got in return was a lazy , unmotivated player who some would even argue was overweight but still getting games to justify why the club chased him.

Our team of growing youngsters do not need this personality disrupting what we are growing.

Weddle, McDonald, Day will be asking for more chocolates come contract time.

I think they deserve it more than a blow in that relies on reputation rather than hard sweat to get games.

He will tap Clarko next.

Ironically the fact that so few AFL players are solely motivated by money has really hurt us the last 5-6 years. We have been front ending contracts for half a decade hoping to land big names with the extra dollars but AFL players are mostly motivated by team success, individual development and lifestyle factors of where they and their families want to live. At the end of the day, with the salary cap and after tax, the difference between the biggest offers and the offers strong sides can make anyway is rarely life changing. It’s not like a $20M difference in other sports.
I think about it like this, if you in a position where you know and like the culture and the people around you and you are on 500k a year how much would it take you to go somewhere new where you barely know anyone, where you have to learn everything about the place, where you need to learn all those things about team mates people around the club. I always expect clubs to retain players

Spot on

Rumours that Charlie Cameron wants out of Lions!

We're in a spot where it isn't just talent talent talent, we've got to look at fit both from a game play and a culture perspective. Baz would be great - right age, hard working kid, close friends with CJ and others on our list already. Hill still has some connection, he's close with the coach, with Roughy, very much so with Sic. If he came really cheap I'd be okay with it.

Cameron I don't get. Not just that I find he's a bit of a downhill skiier, I just wonder if he's going to want to be here and if he does is he going to respond to how we want to play. Not so sure, particularly for what he will cost.

Hill went back home for family, realised it was a shit hole then came back to Melbourne, sure he picked up some healthy money but as a 3 time flag winner at 22 and one of the best winger combinations of the last 100 years he had every right to be rewarded. We got shafted by freo but to end up with meek and weddle, and hodge a little while before that it all works out in the end

We need to avoid doing a St.Kilda and topping up to play finals and then crashing back down.

This. Hill's age puts me off more than anything to do with his backstory. Same with Cameron. These aren't positional needs we are desperate for.

Topping up is essential, just you have to have the basis of a team before you start to put quality assets on the trade table. We are in a very different position to what the Saints were when they went for Hannerbury, Hill, etc.

So would the club. Surprised to see some on here baulking at the idea of a 50 goal a season forward in his prime

Watson - Chol - Ginnivan
Cameron - Lewis - Dear

That's some forward line, one of the better in the competition.

It would also free up Moore and Macdonald to spend more time in the midfield.

A graders don't come on the market very often. If you have an opportunity to get one, you do it.

To clarify from what I’ve read the Cola reintroduction applies to the soft cap only, so to assist in keeping assistant coaches.. not related to player payments.
Also no to Hill and no to Cameron..
I’m open to Smith as he’s something we don’t have a lot of, and he’s got a lot of years left at the highest level.
Develop our players as we’ve been doing. target FAs and draft.
Don’t rush the rebuild, it’s happening organically, we just need to stick to the process..
