It's just a massive strategic failure.
Strategy should have been to maximize picks in top 30. Instead we get fixated on a 27 year on old and then for god knows what reason seem to have structured our whole trade period around securing him. Just insanity.
Then, even if you thought going after...
It just feels so bad that through a combination of (now) our own incompetence and AFL draft concessions we are performing as near the worst team but getting less from the draft than several other teams each year.
Positives
Jamieson had some good defensive efforts, Cripps and Yeo are trying really hard, Gov is still great (lovely kicking early).
The commentators are so sick of watching our non-competitive games they are advocating for us getting a PP.
Negatives
We have lost all 12 quarters we've...
Pos
Good stuff from Ginbey - got his hands on it and showed some speed.
Gov/Cripps/Yeo/Hunt really trying and giving us something
Reid (particularly in the first)
Intent to take the game on more was good.
Hough was good
Neg
Basic skill errors ruining good build ups
Not kicking a goal for 60+...
Yeah I'm worried about this too. We just need to get more talent in and have limited means to do so at a rate which gets us above replacing what we are losing.
I'm not sure that would still be the case with an uncompromised draft but 1,30 every year just doesn't look like getting it done.
I'm...
I'm really struggling with the F1 thing.
There seems to be about zero people on this board who would do the Melbourne trade this year (1 for 6, 11, F1). So why is effectively 1/2 and 23 for 7 and 16 so appealing?
Just seems deeply short sighted.
Finishing last or near it and not getting a...
People seem really put out of shape by the Gov/Naitanui/Gaff deals but I've always seen them as sweetheart deals to reward players who've done a lot for the club (and potentially cut team-friendly deals at other points in there careers). It's never bothered me because with the state of the list...
Positives
Really excited about Hewitt
That was genuinely a very good game from Gaff, good on him for sticking with it.
Long bobbed up again with some nice plays
Neutral
Like seeing Chesser getting more of the ball, but feel like he loses touch with his player too easily around stoppages and...
Positives: Hewitt - Last two weeks have made me feel a lot better about the pick split.
Chesser - looking a little better
Negatives: I get why we did it but it's pretty hard for anyone to look good playing that game style because you never have good options to kick to.
I am finally aboard...
I mean Gaff knocked back a big contact offer from North at the end of 2018 to do the two year extension that took him to 2024. At the time he was a 28 year old averaging 31 a game, and he had a very good 2019. Didn't see him falling off this badly but a lot of it is about his traditional role...
Suspect we are on the path to get one during this rebuild because the chances of next year being more than what, four wins?, seem pretty low.
But I imagine we might have to wait another year for the losses to really pile up before we get it.
It is just wild how bad our list is. There are like 5 players that are young and talented enough to even have a theoretical shot at coming out the other side of the rebuild.
In theory the go all in on trying to win the flag and then completely bottom out was the right strategy. But I didn't...
Who knows how it will play out long term but they both really look like the have something special and particularly over the last few weeks Ginbey has really just offered tackling and not much else.
This is probably the wrong way to think about it but it really does make inclined to take Reid...
This is it - I get the frustration but we are putting historically bad teams on the field and there's just not much a coach can do.
Fix up the S&C and get some decent picks/free agents in the team and reassess at the end of this contract.
Just to get this straight opportunity cost is the value of the best alternative forgone. With football where there a number of players in the midfield the opportunity cost of playing Priddis is the best midfielder not currently in the 22. To be blunt at West Coast this player is often not very...
I'm actually finding this quite hard. Hawthorn, Geelong great teams and produce exciting play but have been in so many recent GFs it just wouldn't be that exciting.
Essendon I don't want near the grand final because of reasons that won't be mentioned on the main board. Sydney I don't want near...
Respectfully disagree on Shep. He has below average first touch, strength and composure. Much more suited to playing outside than in a traditional midfield role.
Not a coaching issue. So many opportunities missed due to basic skill errors (fumbling mostly as well as poor disposal). Would at least like to see them with some of their better talent back in.
Maybe this is broadening the issue too much but personally I have no issue with AFL players taking recreational drugs for the simple reason that it doesn't effect the integrity of the competition by boosting performance and the players are only putting themselves at risk rather than hurting...
Again where did I mention he's as good as one of the truly elite mids? Where did I say we should build around him?
My post was entirely to make the point he doesn't simply beat up on bad midfields to get his stats. Whatever you think about his overall game that is an unfair criticism.
I'm a...
Well ok then - unfortunately that opinion doesn't fit the facts. He doesn't beat up on weak midfields and then play worse against stronger ones as you suggested. In 2013 he averaged 28.5 disposals and 5.5 tackles in wins and 28.8 disposals and 5.9 tackles in losses. As I said: consistent...
Regardless of the rest of what you've said I think this is really inaccurate. In fact when we are getting beaten badly Priddis is often one of our only players who is effective. He always leaves everything out on the field and at times has been the only mid capable of consistently winning his...
Yeah certainly the possession total would have looked a bit better if he had played the last. As I said I'm just a little worried about how often he is held to low possession counts.
The good:
Gaff's physicality - I've been worried that he has a tendency to corral his opponents instead of putting on the jets and looking for a tackle, which can hurt our overall defense. Some great bumps and tackles in this game and a generally willingness to chase and tackle.
Bennell -...
