Under a 20 team league, construct a 10 team final series

One if, no buts, no maybes, and yet you still found it worthwhile to make that comment. I won't try convincing you further, it is a waste of effort.

Under a 20 team league, construct a 10 team final series

If the minor premiers beat the 10th seed in week 1, they get a bye in week 2. The 10th seed doesn't get this luxury if they win that game. The result of this game determines whether there is a third week 2 semifinal or not - there will either be 6 teams left (2 byes) or 7 teams left (1 bye)...

I regret dredging this thread up from the depths.

Under a 20 team league, construct a 10 team final series

Scroll back and see the format I bumped this thread with (3 second chance teams) - I think it got lost with the normal morass of internet comments. Maybe I could merge that with this and come up with a viable "lucky loser" scenario...having 3 semifinals and a bye in week 2 is really good...

Under a 20 team league, construct a 10 team final series

I'd love it if you could find it so I can compare with mine; I've ALSO discovered a 13-team straight knockout works incredibly well, and want to see if he's got the same reasoning. After the first round it's very much about rest advantages. EDIT: Obviously 13 is too many for the AFL, but the...

Under a 20 team league, construct a 10 team final series

    Found it - sorry I'm almost a decade late. Top 3 get the double chance, and there's a semifinal in Week 2 that only gets played if there's a big upset in Week 1. Prelims & Eliminators: A - 2nd vs. 3rd (double chance) B - 1st vs. 10th (double chance for 1st only) C - 4th vs. 9th D - 5th vs. 8th...

WTF is this talk about abolishing drawn games?!?

How many times have Premiership games been decided in extra time? That Collingwood game a couple years ago? Is that it? That's the beauty of this game - 80 minutes almost always does it. Mecha: the less-than-1% of times a game goes into extra time would likely not be accounted for in the TV...

    Extra time in H & A rounds?

Where here in the States the general consensus is "overtime, duh," footy is a great sport with rare draws. Earlier in the thread, someone said they don't like the "three different outcomes of a drawn match" through H&A and Finals, which I agree with - I work for the NHL and we have a much worse...

    Richmond draw a new record.

You guys should be happy that you have a code of football that has so few draws in regulation - gridiron and ice hockey are mired with horrible overtime systems just to find a "winner," even if the resulting overtime no longer represents actual football/hockey. Enjoy the novelty of a draw (it's...

Why 4 points for a win?

I've suggested that ice hockey and soccer might be best served by playing a full period of sudden-death overtime (1/3rd the length of the regular game, which neither sport does except in playoff situations), and then getting rid of points and counting ties/draws as TIEBREAKERS, coming after...

    Weird football scores

I heard from a friend that he knew of a lower-league game that finished with a final score of 989 to 0 (he didn't specify goals vs. behinds or who). If anyone has information on that game I'd love to see it.

How much longer before St.Kilda fall in a heap? *MB Thread*

    Obscure Question Re Grand Finals

If stadiums are an issue, I'm sure that there are some up here in the States that would gladly take on an AFL Grand Final Double Replay (but it has to be promoted as that). I'm certainly not promising MCG oval size, shape, or quality, but hey...the $econd $aturday of october $ertainly $ound$...

    Number of games per oval?

Lenny: nice :) I laffed. No, the idea is that the Victorian clubs end up with more "home" games because they are playing each other quite a bit. I'm actually not suggesting any neutral site games at all (what's the point when you finally tap the markets that you are aiming for?) It just...

    Number of games per oval?

I'll probably need only one answer from Victorians, but I'd like to get answers of the following three questions: 1. What is your local AFL-level oval? 2. How many AFL games are played there on a given weekend? How many lower-league (WAFL, SANFL, VFL) games are played there? 3. How many...

Why 4 points for a win?

I've asked this same question several times, and the best answer I get (from teammates, the internet, etc) is "it's just the way it is, the way it's always been." I have Robert Pascoe's "The Winter Game" in front of me (a bit of a find here in California for a dumb yankee boy who didn't grow up...

Help a BigFooty Legend - Bring Mobbenfuhrer home.

Where in the U.S. did they end up going? (b.t.w. sending out that e-mail worked, I stopped frequenting BF about 2 years ago and I'm considering ways to help out...so Shiek, I think it's either way :) )

A Final 9? (If there was an 18-team comp.) Which "9" is better?

In practice, the double chance also exists in Week 2 - except in exchange for not playing in Week 2, the QSF winners effectively "lose." Imagine if you were to just not show up to the QSF in week 1 - they'd list it down as a loss and you'd continue in the Semis.

A Final 9? (If there was an 18-team comp.) Which "9" is better?

Is a 10-team, 4-week finals a simple system? I figure maybe the best way to do that would be to go with old-tyme McIntyre setups, where everyone plays every week (all winners and the top-seeded loser advance in the first two rounds), but I'm not sure.

A Final 9? (If there was an 18-team comp.) Which "9" is better?

The OP's plan 2 is something that I had come up with recently, on my own - and was told that I had copied it from the Footy Show or something (like I'm going to watch the footy show in the U.S.). I like it, but it's not as intriguing as the current system, IMO - a team can come back from a...

Finals flawed - how can 21 wins give you exactly the same rights as 13 wins?

I don't mind the system the way it is - it works, makes sense, and usually doesn't reward mediocrity. That said, there's a proposal I came up with (apparently others have too, so I'm not giving myself or anyone else credit) that gives the minor prem a serious advantage. However, it is not...

Expansion Expansion, A Fair Draw & Prosperity for the AFL in the Future

I hate the two-conference idea - it doesn't work the way you people want it to. Post 3. EDIT: Oooh I know. Use one of the other "fair draw" "schedule" or "conferences" threads.

Expansion Fixturing / Finals With 18 Teams

I have a similar view to the divisions as many others: two Vic teams go west, two Vic teams go north, six Vic teams make a division, and they all rotate on a yearly basis, meaning that you will be in the Victorian division 3 years out of 5. However, I do have a caveat that each team should have...

Expansion A-League to add 4 new teams in 2009

Trust me, soccer fans prefer 4-4 draws. And to have Sydney and Melbourne be "powerhouse" clubs just stifles the rest. Would you like it if your footy club was, by league action, just another club while Collingwood and Carlton were back in supreme power? Salary Cap = necessary. Prevents...

Where would you rank Aussie Rules on this list (see inside) of the most physically difficult sports?

Re: Where would you rank Aussie Rules on this list (see inside) of the most physically difficult spo Hi. ESPN is shit. Even here in the US we know this.

    Furious Kangaroos to meet AFL

Why can't they give the Kangas one more point. That seems like it would appease everyone. Sydney doesn't get a full draw, Kangas beat out others with draws. Of course then percentage would be absolutely useless for those two teams for the rest of the season.

Expansion Fixturing / Finals With 18 Teams

And I hate this conference talk. They don't work in the US - why do you think they would work in Australia? 3 divisions of 6 teams. 22 rounds. Any more rounds and we'll see major footy fatigue. It's fine. It's actually kinda balanced this way. And the format DOESN'T have to change much...
