Bring back the AFL Reserves Competition

Doesn't each team effectively have a reserves team now? I think Freo and West Coast do, while the Swans, Giants, Suns and Lion reserves play in the NEAFL. I think Adelaide have a standalone reserves team in the SANFL from 2014 and didn't Port Adelaide of the AFL and SANFL merge so that the...

Why is the AFL never going to be truly equal?

What is the key issue impacting on having an equitable competition? I think if there is one thing that has the biggest impact it is the number of clubs. I feel this cascades across many of the issues that have been raised in this thread. If the number of clubs was reduced to 14-16 I think this...

The myth of our so called ageing midfield

interesting discussion. The harshest critics of a team are its supporters. What I noticed this season was that we were the best team with few clear standout players. Often when I would look at the inside football ratings, it was clear that we generally have an even contribution from most...

Another AFL - Demetriou failure - 2013 International Rules Series

While I am generally supportive of the AFL administration who have a tough job and can't keep everyone happy, this is not something they would be proud of.

Another AFL - Demetriou failure - 2013 International Rules Series

So what happened in the past makes a racial based selection policy acceptable? Your attitude is more racist than the comment you responded to which was a statement of fact. An all aboriginal side represents that demographic; it is not an Australian side because players were not provided the...

Why is the AFL never going to be truly equal?

This is the unfortunate truth. I believe 16 clubs is ideal; the AFL should have maintain this number when adding GCS and GWS.

AFL Draw - You cant have your cake and eat it too

An equitable fixture can be achieved if you have two conferences of nine and play 25 games.

    Fateful decisions at your club

The 1996 proposed merger. While it wasn't a great time, it has made the HFC what it is today. It led to a 180 degree change in the in the what the club was operated and galvanised the clubs supporters not to take the existence of the club for granted.

AFL Draw - You cant have your cake and eat it too

While there is some tongue in cheek in what you say, as clubs like GC and GWS get stronger it will place increasing pressure on the weaker Victorian clubs. While the AFL is being silent, I have always maintained that it is inevitable that at some stage the issue of the number of Victorian clubs...

AFL Draw - You cant have your cake and eat it too

Could not agree more. The AFL needs to do something which eliminates/reduces the distortions the draw creates. As much as it pains me, the only feasible solution is a conference system where the teams in each conference have an equal chance against the other teams in their conference. I think...

AFL Draw - You cant have your cake and eat it too

The above table highlights how distorted the draw makes the AFL. If North had Port's draw they would have made the finals. A couple of years ago, Adelaide made the top four at West Coasts expense because of the draw. I wish the AFL would seriously look at this. There are solutions other than...

    Fact Ken Farmer's career

Surely, there must have been some reason why there was such a scoring spree. Looking at the VFL goal kicking numbers, it is noticeably that after 1940 the number of goals kicked falls right away. Other than Coleman (who tops 100 three times and kicks 97 in another season) no one gets close to...

    Fact Ken Farmer's career

I think the other pertinent point is when the above players played the majority of their careers. Ignoring VFA players, Ken Farmer, George Doig, Bernie Schultz and Ted Tyson played the majority of their careers in the 1930s. John Coleman and Bernie Naylor played during the mid 1940s to mid...

    Fact Ken Farmer's career

I can't really talk about non-VFL players, however I would certainly remove VFA players as my understanding is that it has always been inferior to the VFL (at least since 1897). Of the VFL players, John Coleman is unquestionably the best given the era he played in which was relatively low...

    Final replayed twice

I was taking a look around a website which provides scores and ladders of most VFA seasons. Interestingly in 1912, the first semi final was replayed twice. North Melbourne and Brunswick drew the original match 9.6 (60) apiece. The game was replayed two weeks later and again the game was a draw...

2 years on, what do you think of the Giants branding?

In my view Freo's branding has improved mainly due to on-field improvement coupled with a more traditional guernsey design. Port Adelaide have also adopted a more traditional design. I think GWS could have gone down a more traditional path from the beginning. Given the nature of the area they...

    Luke Hodge over rated?

Who cares if he is overrated or not? He is an important part of the Hawthorn side at that is all that counts. This preoccupation some have with whether one player is better than the other baffles me. It is the contribution a player makes to the team that is important not whether he is superior...

Mike Sheahans end of season top 50 [2013]

Why is Mike's top 50 given so much prominence? Personally couldn't care less who Mike ranks where; it is the team rankings which count. I watched bits and pieces of the Brownlow and again realised how little significance individual awards are.

Why don't we match the Swans' deal?

I must admit, it surprises me that Sydney would go to such lengths to secure him. Perhaps he is of significant value marketing wise. I don't see him being a great fit with what Sydney have built over two decades. Perhaps he has given certain undertakings. Don't see how the Sydney style of game...

Why don't we match the Swans' deal?

The club will make the best decision based on the pros and cons. They do have some experience in these matters.

Why don't we match the Swans' deal?

It is what it is. Hopefully we get decent compensation (I.e. a first rounded or end of first round). While it is easy to get frustrated - there is no point. The only thing that annoys me a little is the additional salary cap they get. In the past we have traded well to the frustration of others...

They can offer him whatever they like. but geez nine years is a big risk.

didn't we offer Nick Holland a five year deal? Great offer that was!

Franks for the memories. Things don't always go well with COLA

I have never really had a significant affinity for any one player of our club. I barrack for the club, not one particular player. So whether Buddy stays or goes it is up to him. The club is bigger than any one player and quite frankly, I don't think he is the superstar that the media makes out...

    Weird football scores

The 1948 GF was a draw with Melbourne scoring 10.9 to Essendon 7.27. Melbourne won the reply. Pre WW2, Geelong beat Fitzroy 19.8 to 2.27. Hawthorn scored 25.41 in the 1970s to beat St Kilda (I think) who scored 16.7. Hawthorn trailed St Kilda by 63 points early in the second quarter in a game...

    Weird football scores

Hawthorn played Geelong in a game which I think took place in the 1980s. At half time, Hawthorn led 10.8 to 10.5 and then kicked 25 goals in the second half to by well over 100 points.

    What happened to Heritage round?

Gee they are a few themed rounds. Personally the only thing of significance is who we are playing and where. The only themed round I had some interest in was Heritage round to see the old guernseys, but they got rid of that.

    What happened to Heritage round?

Why on earth didn't GWS go with something like this rather than what they currently wear. Probably would need to make some changes due to colours already being used by Footscray.
