The Dragon Spirit Medal is an award that is voted on by all the Dragons FFC players to acknowledge the opposition poster who best dominates the match thread and/or the Qooty field. High quality banter, excellent engagement with all posters, and good humour are all taken into consideration.

So once again the Drags came upon their flying, firey brethren in the East Side Phoenix. Nevermind the fact they're actually Hawks that are just lit on fire, pretending to be magical birds, but we'll humour them. Unfortunately they still pipped us on the Qooty field but the match thread was as always a good bit of fun, at least.

The winner for the Round 5 Dragon Spirit medal is no stranger to winning the medal - and if he is, I assume amnesia is at play.

The winner is of course thewizardmelon ! Congrats mate, try not to let it go to your head or it really will be the size of a melon.

This may be the closest I get to back to back for a while! Appreciate you crew as always. Thanks Dragons! Until our next match thread!

So sim-results aside it was quite a disappointing round against the Bombers in Round 6, with only 13 Dragons making an appearance in the thread - our lowest number in quite a few seasons. Those that did appear though stood tall, and our total of 552 match thread posts was nothing to be ashamed about. Strigoi (97), T2B_ (78) and DragoDelph (82) were everywhere, and they had some wonderful support from Bonz (75) and Braklet (64). We also saw season-high output from Ljp86 (24), Blaze Storm (17) and Chief (10) - whilst Hatchy1992 (15) and Pie 4 Life (11) each popped in for handy cameos

Hopefully we'll see the return of the likes of Stoods, Matt_352, DJ75, Ashman OG and HawkAussie shortly!

Round 7 sets us up against our arch-rivals the Warriors who have always been a bit rabid due to our on-field dominance over them for the past few seasons. Let's continue our recent form and keep that trend going. Go Dragons!
The fact that that is actually my season high output is slightly embarrassing. But alas.

Round 6
Team Banner MVP S33.png

One of the awards that is issued each season at Dragons FFC is the Coach's MVP. Each week Coach will cast votes based on who he thinks performs best on the qooty field. Raw statistics, positional dominance and big moments in the sim are taken into account, and Coach crunches the numbers with a complex algorithm to deal out 3-2-1 votes. Coach AceAndy still has the big job at the Dragons, despite an increasing reputation for sudden, strange onfield moves that either pay off brilliantly or end in total disaster, fast becoming known as Craaaaazy Andy, but after a premiership in season 32, understandably still has the keys to the machine that is the Dragons.

Coach's thoughts:

And so along came Round 6, and with it a game we had either been dreading or looking forward to, depending on who in the team you would ask. Personally, I couldn't wait for the team to face the Bombers and hopefully send them crashing to Earth. Well, even more crashed to Earth - their record so far this season wasn't amazing. But still, you can only face your opposition on the day and our record hasn't been stellar either.

Would we pull off a desperately needed win, or would the Bombers manage to earn the bragging rights and send us slinking back to Crocodile Drunkees?

Round 6, Conditions for this match - CLOUDY

As the team ran onto the field at Ljp86's Lair under cloudy skies, the atmosphere was palpable. The crowd was loud and our team looked determined. I will admit, even I was taken aback at just how determined the team turned out to be. What would follow would have to be seen to be believed. It was definitely enough to make me put Animal Crossing aside for at least 80% of the match.

The game lasted about 10 minutes. I mean this almost literally. The Bombers managed to draw first blood through Metalcrusher, while Knifey Spoony, beyond desperate now for that Subway voucher, responded with a goal of his own. Bonz then burst out of the blocks to give us 2 goals of his own in succession. The Bombers then snuck in a major of their own through Noidenous to bring the margin back to just under a goal.

That was the last time the Bombers were seen alive.

Bonz once again got a major, showing no signs of his sore back from carrying us the previous weeks, and from here on in the first quarter it was all Dragons! Goals (and a fair share of behinds as well) rained down for the rest of quarter from the likes of DJ75, DragoDelph, Strigoi, Ljp86, Pie 4 Life and, naturally, Bonz (his 4th for the term!) meant we were a staggering 55 points up at the first break. An incredible quarter where all in all we had kicked 10 goals, 8 behinds.

Entering the second term, the Bombers would naturally be looking for a pulse. But the defibrillator would never come. Chief, having moved up the ground, kicked us off with a nice goal. Bonz threatened with 2 minor scores in a row before kicking truly for his 5th goal, bringing the margin, in a rather poetic fashion, to 69 points. Knifey Spoony finally scored his second goal, bringing up the Subway voucher once and for all and he looked a new man. Braklet, Ljp86 got in on the action before once again Bonz showed the Bombers had no answer for him. Knifey Spoony kicked his 3rd (!) goal before the Bombers finally got a goal, thanks to JustaBattler late in the term. However Bonz wasn't done yet, ragdolling his defenders to slot another goal just before half time, bringing the margin to a whopping 103 points at the main break.

Ljp86 informed us that the second half of the Qox Qooty telecast was being moved to the Adults Only channel, and he wasn't wrong. I looked around during the break and saw network executives looking nervous and Bomber fans covering their children's eyes - the sight so far was not for the faint of heart and didn't look likely to improve.

dragons-bombers-phub.png

The third quarter was actually a little better for the Bombers. By better, I mean instead of being absolutely annihilated, they were merely destroyed. But if we're being fair they at least reduced the margin a little. Goals to T2B_, Bonz and DJ75 gave us a great start and got the margin out to a game high 119 points before the Bombers finally hit back with 2 goals in a row. Braklet snuck another goal in before the Bombers kicked 4 goals to close out the term in red time.

Obviously wanting a second voucher, Knifey Spoony started us off in the final term with his 4th goal, followed up by Bonz throwing his weight around yet again with his 9th goal. From here on it was a bit of a shoot out for the term, with the Bombers getting a few goals in, while our own Hatchy1992 and Chief slotted a major each. Closing out one of the best full forward performances in recent memory, Bonz another couple of goals bringing his total up to a brilliant 11 goals for the match.

When the siren sounded, we had a final margin of 98 points. Not quite the triple figure margin in the end, but given we had basically been in junk time since half time and cruising, one cannot complain. A brilliant win, not soon forgotten.

Extra KFC and Subway for all!

Defender highlights: With an absolutely staggering first half, the defense had relatively little to do, such was the strength of our offense. Then with essentially junk time to follow, it's a little hard to get a read on our defensive unit statistically, but suffice to say like the whole team, everyone played their role and did their job, to say the least. HawkAussie (15d, 6m) defended well and got a decent amount of it. Blaze Storm (11d, 5m) likewise held up his end of the bargain and Ashman OG (18d, 9ho) had looked likely before I decided to switch him for Strigoi in the ruck for the fun of it.

Midfield highlights: The engine room fired on all cylinders, no doubt about it. T2B_ (24d, 12t, 1g, 2b) was relentless all day and tackled the hell out of the opposition, while Pie 4 Life (20d, 9t, 1g, 3b) was his partner in crime. DragoDelph (30d, 5m, 1g, 1b) was everywhere in the centre as was Bradesmaen (28d, 5m) on the wing. The midfield was further bolstered by some incredible numbers from the half forwards as we'll see below.

Forward highlights: If we had been lamenting our forward craft last week, it was definitely not so this week. Braklet (37d, 11m, 2g, 4b) was absolutely phenomenal at CHF, blitzing around the forward half and outpacing even the onballers for sheer disposals. Bonz (16d, 11g, 5b) was at his absolute best, and a little terrifying given he had 16 scoring shots in total. Supporting Braklet expertly around the HFF were DJ75 (20d, 10m, 2g, 1b) and Ljp86 (21d, 6m, 2g). Finally, we have to mention the finally nourished Knifey Spoony (7d, 4g, 1b) who broke a major drought and made his presence known in the forward pocket.

Next week: We take on the Coney Island Warriors, AKA the Karens. We've shown just what we're capable of against the Bombers, now let us carry it on. Go Dragons!

Round 6 MVP Votes vs. Baghdad Bombers
3 votes - Bonz
2 votes - Braklet
1 vote - T2B_

The sim really plays up Bonz' best qualities:
  • In what became a bit of a clinic, KohPhi's bum will be a bit sore after having it solidly kicked by Bonz. - 59m from 2 to 61.
including his status as a Roman governor:
  • In what became a bit of a clinic, Bonz massacred The Jesus. - 23m from 76 to 99.

Probably not the first time someone has gone toe to toe with Bonz and finished with a sore bum.

ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE COACH

coach-aceandy.png

While we could do much worse than a draw, and runs on the board mean most of you do still get to enjoy KFC and Subway rations, there is one I must single out - T2B_, mate, you had a decent enough overall game and I know you gave your all, but you couldn't hit the side of Crocodile Drunkees even if you tried at point blank range. We want you to kick behinds, but not like that!

T2B_ gets no rations this week.

Bad luck, Dragons. It was a seesawing battle all day with not much between the sides for long portions of the game. We certainly had opportunities in front of goal and probably should have had a good win but we didn't have the best day in front of the sticks which proved to be a problem in the end. Thankfully we were at least able to secure a draw so two points is at least something to take away from the game.

Bonz had another great game in front of goal and continues a rich run of form, T2B_ had a super game in the midfield while Strigoi, Nool Carpenna, Bradesmaen and HawkAussie also played strong matches on the day as well.

A bit of an indifferent result in the end in what was a pretty entreating match overall. Next week is another away game so we'll need to prepare for that which is sure to be a big game for the club. :thumbsu:

Go Dragons!!

Chief, Bonz, DJ75, Nool Carpenna, Maylandsman, Blaze Storm, Braklet, Pie 4 Life, serial_thrilla, T2B_, Mooresome, Stoods, DragoDelph, BringBackTheAnchor, Matt_352, Strigoi, Hatchy1992, paraaaa, Knifey Spoony, VandoHawk, Bradesmaen, Ashman OG, HawkAussie, Ljp86.

It was a similar story this week against the Warriors as it was the previous week in the Bombers thread: good overall posting numbers, but the key metric (number of Dragons in the thread) was down. 501 posts with a 59% thread share was as much as we could expect without talking to ourselves endlessly, but it would be great to see some of the missing Dragons make a return. No posts from Knifey Spoony, Stoods, Ashman OG, Matt_352, HawkAussie and paraaaa meant that only 14 Dragons made an appearance, which is a number that I'd love to see improve once again.

Even so, there were solid contributions from the likes of T2B_ (91), Braklet (78), DragoDelph (62), Strigoi (51) and Bonz (48) - whilst we saw season high numbers from Bradesmaen (14) and BringBackTheAnchor (3).

This week we're facing off against the West Coast Wonders, so I expect there to be a fair bit more thread activity and general fun than there was against the mopey Karens. I hope to see you all there as we look to properly get our season off the ground. Go Dragons!

The Dragon Spirit Medal is an award that is voted on by all the Dragons FFC players to acknowledge the opposition poster who best dominates the match thread and/or the Qooty field. High quality banter, excellent engagement with all posters, and good humour are all taken into consideration.

Round 6 rolled around and we came up against the Bombers. Yes, the Bombers. You never quite know how a match thread with them will go. Generally we (Dragons) have a pretty good time with the Bombers, as weird as that may seem to say, but there's always the potential for someone from either side to drop a metaphorical grenade and then all hell breaks loose. I think this time around it was fairly smooth. And even if it wasn't, it was drowned out by Bombers music spam anyway.

Anyway, time for the Round 6 Dragon Spirit medalist. I think this winner did pretty well, as he would have spent most of the week peeing on people's legs and getting into the scraps dumped out the back of Dragon Island Subway.

Yes, that's right, it's the 4 legged former Dragon himself, Pugsley ! Congrats mate, now try not to swallow the medal.

Thanks mate. I love coming up against my former team and it is a time I will always remember fondly.
The banter is always of the highest quality and I look forward to our next match up.

In Round 7 the Dragons met up with the
inverted bob sporting mob known as the Coney Island Warriors. The actual match ended much how anyone would have approached the match thread - in no fanfare whatsoever. That said, it wasn't a bad week, it had it's moments and the Warriors four posters can be decent value.

Now this week's winner was a bit out of the blue. A newbie for the Warriors who made his presence known, clearly. This kid seems a real up and comer and who knows what his future holds in the league. I feel the Dragon spirit is strong with this poster though.

Congrats A Swallow !

Itā€™s true. I knew that this was the only way I could qualify for this club award.
Understandable, it's not like you've ever won any club awards before.

Round 7

With the excitement of facing the Bombers out of the way and a whole heap of celebrations after that win, it was time to face the Warriors. We've had the wood over the Warriors for a while (much to their chagrin) and we weren't about to let them get back one over us. Still no game is guaranteed.

Would we once again send the Warriors packing (and complaining to the SFA managers) or would they finally get some pride back?

[RD 7], Conditions for this match - WARM

This one was an Away game at Van Cortlandt Park, so the crowd might have seemed hostile if not for the fact there might have been all 5 of the Warrior fans there. The weather was a bit of a treat - warm and still.

I thought to myself we might have another stats fiesta on our hands, and hopefully, a good win for the Dragons. What followed though was a strikingly even game. A little too even, as it turns out.

It took over 5 minutes for either side to score; the ball being exchanged between the sides like some kind of hot potato and the contest was fierce. In true fashion for our full forward behemoth though, it was Bonz that got us off and running with a major. No one scored again until red time however, when the Warriors finally landed a blow through Mesc. Pie 4 Life and Braklet quickly responded with a major each to get us a 14 point advantage at quarter time.

The second quarter was rather odd - it seemed like a flurry of scores (about 6 goals worth) from both sides all happened in less than one minute. I assume this was a mistake on my part though, as I was pretty distracted looking up cruise ship deals online at the time. Anyway according to the stats Braklet opened the quarter for us with a goal, only for the Warriors to respond with 3 goals of their own. The goals kept coming from the Warriors, but in between - so did Bonz. Each time they got 1 or 2 majors he would respond with one of his own, culminating in him kicking 4 goals for the quarter (5 total to this point) and it was looking like the Bonz Show (as usual). He didn't have many friends joining in, however, (though T2B_ kicked a couple of quick behinds - so close) so as half time rolled around, we only had a 1 point advantage.

After getting some input from the team about the deals I had found online, which they had little interest in (young people today, I tell you), they rolled out for the third term. This was another quarter of ultimately trading blows and it was obvious this match was a war of attrition. We got a few goals through Matt_352, Nool Carpenna and Strigoi while the Warriors snuck a few through themselves. For the opposition though perhaps their greatest achievement was finding a way to curtail Bonz, who kicked just the one minor score for the quarter. All in all the Warriors had just edged ahead for a 2 point advantage at three quarter time.

Knifey Spoony got us underway in the final quarter with a major. The Warriors hit back with 2 majors before Knifey Spoony once again kicked a goal, helping himself to another Subway voucher, followed up by Matt_352. The term continued with this trading of blows that ultimately saw 6 (!) lead changes and we might have just pulled ourselves over the line, but the Warriors' BEEG caused us just enough grief at full forward, kicking 2 of his 4 goals for the match in the final term.

While Bonz had been kept quiet for the second half, in the end he did save the game for us: With less than 2 minutes to go, the Warriors' PhatBoy managed to nail a major to put them a goal up. With less than a minute remaining, however, we managed to edge the ball forward and Bonz, never to be outdone, received a long handball, sold some candy and blasted one through the big sticks. A few moments after the next centre bounce, the final siren rang out - and it was a draw.

Both sides were down on their haunches and looked pretty flat, and who can blame them?

MATCH-UPS :
  • In a comparatively small-fry arm wrestle, it could be argued that Mesc had the better game against Ashman OG - although there was very little in it. - 84m from 3 to 87.
  • Neither having much reason to brag, A Swallow had the better of Ashman OG. - 0m from 99 to 99.
  • In a solid performance, Blaze Storm won the bout with Dinsdale. - 95m from 0 to 95.
  • In what became a bit of a clinic, Bonz massacred Ambrose Burnside. - 53m from 7 to 60.
  • In a bit of an exhibition, Bonz massacred Mofra. - 28m from 71 to 99.
  • While not all all one-way, Bradesmaen came out tops over the brave A Swallow. - 94m from 0 to 94.
  • In quite a display, Braklet won the bout with Volbeat. - 95m from 4 to 99.
  • Neither having much reason to brag, BringBackTheAnchor did very well against Ambrose Burnside. - 4m from 95 to 99.
  • In an epic battle, not much between pantskyle and BringBackTheAnchor - the former was probably a smidgeon better. - 68m from 25 to 93.
  • In what was a very slow day for both, Chief had toxic's measure. - 26m from 25 to 51.
  • While the match-up was a bit of a side-show, not much between Snuffaluphagus and DJ75 - the former was probably a smidgeon better. - 93m from 4 to 97.
  • Spending most of the game pushing and shoving each other, DragoDelph did well against Elton Johns Wig. - 25m from 0 to 25.
  • Neither having much reason to brag, Piggy Smalls beat DragoDelph today - but not by much. - 2m from 62 to 64.
  • Neither having much reason to brag, TheInjuryFactory and DragoDelph were evenly matched. - 1m from 61 to 62.
  • While very slim pickings for both players, Mofra came out tops over the brave Hatchy1992. - 56m from 4 to 60.
  • Neither getting, near the ball much, Ambrose Burnside was way too good for Hatchy1992. - 3m from 71 to 74.
  • Spending most of the game pushing and shoving each other, it could be argued that Hatchy1992 had the better game against TubbsFarquhar - although there was very little in it. - 20m from 77 to 97.
  • Despite neither player having much impact, Piggy Smalls had HawkAussie's measure. - 32m from 1 to 33.
  • In a solid performance, HawkAussie exposed Raveneyes's frailties. - 67m from 33 to 100.
  • While the match-up was a bit of a side-show, not much between Knifey Spoony and NaturalDisaster - the former was probably a smidgeon better. - 46m from 46 to 92.
  • While overall a quiet day for both players, I'm not sure that what Raveneyes did to Knifey Spoony should be entirely legal. - 21m from 4 to 25.
  • Toe to toe throughout, FootyGuy13 and Ljp86 were evenly matched. - 82m from 0 to 82.
  • Despite neither player having much impact, PhatBoy was easily the winner in the clash with Ljp86. - 9m from 89 to 98.
  • While the match-up was a bit of a side-show, Matt_352 either broke even with Freofalcon or vaguely bested him - it was hard to tell. - 75m from 24 to 99.
  • In a resume-material performance, Tonga Bob had Nool Carpenna's measure. - 94m from 6 to 100.
  • Toe to toe throughout, it could be argued that Pie 4 Life had the better game against pantskyle - although there was very little in it. - 25m from 0 to 25.
  • While overall a quiet day for both players, I'm not sure that what Mesc did to Pie 4 Life should be entirely legal. - 0m from 35 to 35.
  • In quite a display, BEEG won the bout with serial_thrilla. - 70m from 25 to 95.
  • Regardless that this wasn't a huge game for either player, Stoods was easily the winner in the clash with TubbsFarquhar. - 55m from 2 to 57.
  • Spending most of the game pushing and shoving each other, Elton Johns Wig did well against Stoods. - 30m from 65 to 95.
  • While not all all one-way, TheInjuryFactory came out tops over the brave Strigoi. - 36m from 63 to 99.
  • While not all all one-way, Tonga Bob won the bout with Strigoi. - 5m from 0 to 5.
  • While worlds weren't set on fire, Elton Johns Wig gave Strigoi a bit of a touch-up. - 15m from 25 to 40.
  • Spending most of the game pushing and shoving each other, Strigoi either broke even with Piggy Smalls or vaguely bested him - it was hard to tell. - 21m from 41 to 62.
  • In an epic battle, T2B_ and TheInjuryFactory were well-matched - there was no victor. - 60m from 0 to 60.
  • While the match-up was a bit of a side-show, T2B_ did well against Piggy Smalls. - 30m from 67 to 97.

Defender highlights: HawkAussie (17d, 6m) continued his nice run of form at half back, ably assisted by Stoods (14d, 6m), while Blaze Storm (13d, 5m) did his thing at CHB. This was a difficult game for defenders of either side as the ball was liable to slingshot inside 50 rapidly.

Midfield highlights: Bradesmaen (29d, 5m, 1b) was at his ball magnet best on the wing. His partner on the opposite wing in Matt_352 (14d, 3m, 2g) while less prolific did sink two important goals. Nool Carpenna (16d, 17ho, 1g, 1b) very ably took care of the ruck situation once he was moved off the interchange bench for Strigoi. The aforementioned Strigoi (16d, 3m, 3t, 1g, 2b) did grind away well onball, though I did notice some scowls coming my way up in the coaches box. T2B_ (25d, 3m, 4t, 4b) was a terrier in the midfield whose only real blemish was not splitting the sticks with multiple attempts. BringBackTheAnchor (18d, 5t) was also quite handy after coming off the bench for Pie 4 Life who suffered a sprained ankle after ironically slipping on one of his pies.

Forward highlights: While last week the forward line was like a well oiled machine, it was a bit less so this week, with our reliance being a little too much on our main man again. Bonz (7d, 2m, 6g, 1b) continued his run for the Fred Medal and kept us in the game early and also ultimately saved us from true defeat. Knifey Spoony (3d, 2g) was the only other forward to kick multiple goals, though I suspect it was mainly to get his Subway voucher!

Next week: We take on the West Coast Wonders (eww). Yes, the Bombers, Warriors and Wonders all in a row is truly joyous. I probably should have taken my cruise early. Oh well. Go Dragons!

Nice win Dragons!! The first half was quite the challenge and there was certainly quite a lot of work to be done being close to four goals down at the main break. A very good third quarter and a solid last term helped turn things around and we posted a nice win come the final siren.

DragoDelph played a super game this week in what has been a great rookie season with Pie 4 Life, Bradesmaen, Chief, DJ75 and Braklet all playing pretty good games while Matt_352, Knifey Spoony and Hatchy1992 kept the scoreboard going, particularly in the second half.

Nice to get a win in a big game away from home. Next week we're back at home in what shapes up as another big game for the club. :thumbsu:

Go Dragons!! :thumbsu:

Dragons FFC Board Announces Inquiry Into Star Ruck's Benching
28 March 2022

In a surprise move on Monday, the board of the Dragons FFC have announced an independent inquiry to be taken place within the club's walls. The Dragon Island Times has been told by sources that the move likely comes after repeated and strange interchanges during the club's matches. Specifically, they say, concerning Dragons FFC star ruckperson, Strigoi. The inquiry would likely be targeting Dragons FFC coach, AceAndy, who insiders say is most responsible for the "bizarre" moves.

One of the board members, who wished to remain anonymous, told us that the inquiry was "necessary to uphold team standards" but denied that the inquiry was targeting any specific persons at the club.

"Look, we feel a star and otherwise fully healthy ruck, for example, being benched just minutes into a game on multiple occasions is something that needs to be looked at," they told reporters on Monday morning. "We will have all levels of staff and processes looked at. No matter whether you spend time playing Animal Crossing, look up cruise deals or spend way too much time posting and encouraging Rebecca Black 'Friday' music videos, you will be looked at during the inquiry process."

A Dragons FFC player, also remaining anonymous, told reporters that it "was about time" that something was done. "Every time I witnessed 'Strigs' getting benched for no apparent reason, I felt sick. I mean I literally went even greener than I usually am," he said. "It's not just Strigs either, though that is by far the worst case, but it happens to a lot of us though. The last game is a prime example of that. I shouldn't say this, but, Coach AceAndy will be a bit nervous I reckon. He probably also shouldn't have stripped T2B_'s fast food allowances for the week. That's how stuff like this happens."

"Wait, you can edit that last part out, right?"

Dragons FFC Coach AceAndy was contacted for comment but has not responded at the time of printing.
