Chad Warner
When the Sydney Swans swept up Chad Warner with pick 39 at the 2019 AFL Draft, they secured a youngster with an insatiable appetite for the contest. Warner attacks the ball and opponents with aggression and is relishing calling midfield bulls Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker his teammates at the Swans. Warner impressed for Western Australia in the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships, averaging 18.2 touches (50 per cent contested), 3.2 clearances and 6.8 tackles per game. He also tallied an average of 27.1 disposals, 6.4 clearances and 7.4 tackles per match at Colts level for East Fremantle in 2019. He earned his AFL debut against Richmond in Round 6 of the 2020 season, recording eight disposals and two tackles.

Chad Warner
DOB: 19 May 2001
DEBUT: 2020
DRAFT: #39, 2019 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Willetton (WA)/Aquinas College (WA)/East Fremantle (WAFL)

The club hid him from media at the media day. They didn’t do that with any of the other guys that we were re-signing last year .

I think they are just trying to delay questioning until the seasons rolls around there is a 24 hr news cycle .

Cannot see a situation where he signs an extension of any length tbh

Well the money we’d save could be used to acquire quite a large fish so you tell the players if they have any qualms that this is what’s still required to win premierships.

Chad at a minimum would probably cost us $3-3.5 million over three years. Hopefully, the hypothetically free cap space secures the blue chip talent that we’re after that can improve the team overall despite the loss of what Chad brings to the side.
What large fish is coming ? People keep dangling this carrot. We havnt signed anyone since buddy , unless they are salary dumps or unwanted by their clubs.

The reality is the market we are in, is not conjusive to signing superstar players.

You are forgetting one significant thing- Tassie drafts mate. Even if they don't jump that pick 3-5 is pick 10. So you are taking heinous unders. Honestly sell high that should be the number 1 thing. If you can GUARANTEE he'll stay for 4 years taking us past the Tassie drafts then I'm all ears in resigning him but if it's only 2, sell now. Take the pick 3-5 plus pick5-7 next year for Chad + Corey and our f2/3 (Corey the steaknives to open a list spot). That is more than fair compensation and WCE are fantastic to deal with. Is it ideal no but personally not interested in only a 2 year deal. People have to remember think the GWS drafts that's how bad it will be. you could be second last the year prior and get pick 6 or so at best.

The top prime mids this year look elite in the draft, take one of them, are they Warner right now no but they look top line. Then you still have a top 5 pick the following season on top. Win/win trade
You are heading down a "give players up to maximise their trade / draft value road" that really leads nowhere.

If, if your club routinely did this then it would release players before they are ready to be released. This could unstable the team. This can be cancerous. The Swans are not a factory for other teams. They are not a place where we maximise compensation for players as a matter of course.

The Swans want to develop players and have them IN THE TEAM rather than historically judging our effectiveness at jettisoning our players at maximum value.

I look at your former club, Essendon. They maximised trade value and draft value every year. It lead them nowhere.

Losing players like Mitchell the Money Hungry, the Adelaide captain, the Richmond premiership ruck etc for less than full value according to your index did not diminish us as a premiership contender. Your consistent premise of we should get rid of Chad early to maximise draft value is boring. He may want to stay but you consistently bang the drum of getting rid of one of THE most damaging midfieders in the competition. For what. An extra 1st rounder? All draft picks are speculative. Proven gun AFL players are a bird in the hand and not a few in the bush.

It's also based on the false premise that Warner's value will somehow be diminished if he was to leave in 2027 because Tasmania might have a bunch of picks in that draft.

Tasmania entering the competition doesn't impact what West Coast would have to give us in a trade.

And the fact that clubs can now trade picks a few years ahead.

His value won't diminish because of it, in fact it should go up if he has a good next 3 years to 2027. But the return we would have to accept in compensation may be diminished if that draft does become compromised.

eg. say West Coast finish 10th and have pick 9, but if they do get pushed back a few picks, it may end up at pick 15.

If their first pick is 15, then they will have to make up the trade value elsewhere through future selections and/or players.

It really makes no difference in terms what would we should be expecting as a return if he was traded at the end of this year or the end of 2027.

If or when it comes time Chad requests a trade there’s more than 1 way to skin a cat, if we are getting draft picks in exchange -

1) Depending on what year he wants to go home then work past Tassies concessions.

2) Tassie will also be after experienced players, our objective / opportunity should be to include them in a 3 club exchange for us gain 1 of Tassies higher picks along with the WA teams highest pick…

These are just my thoughts….

My Hope he signs for longer than we are anticipating….
