Chad Warner
When the Sydney Swans swept up Chad Warner with pick 39 at the 2019 AFL Draft, they secured a youngster with an insatiable appetite for the contest. Warner attacks the ball and opponents with aggression and is relishing calling midfield bulls Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker his teammates at the Swans. Warner impressed for Western Australia in the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships, averaging 18.2 touches (50 per cent contested), 3.2 clearances and 6.8 tackles per game. He also tallied an average of 27.1 disposals, 6.4 clearances and 7.4 tackles per match at Colts level for East Fremantle in 2019. He earned his AFL debut against Richmond in Round 6 of the 2020 season, recording eight disposals and two tackles.

Chad Warner
DOB: 19 May 2001
DEBUT: 2020
DRAFT: #39, 2019 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Willetton (WA)/Aquinas College (WA)/East Fremantle (WAFL)

We had a lot of players last year re-sign with minimal fuss, which makes me think each player left some value on the table to help keep the group together.

The one thing I do not want with Warner is that we pay him a higher share of his worth than those other players.

Who knows what his contract value may be, but $1.5m seems like a lot of salary cap for a single player. I’d prefer depth of talent personally, and rewarding those who re-signed with a deep list who can support them.

There lies the problem. If the guys last year left money on the table , and Warner re signs for maximum money , what does that do to the rest of the players.

If wce are offering 1.5 mill a year , it’s extremely hard to see Warner leaving let’s say 500k a year on the table costing him millions over the course of the deal. It’s just not a good business decision

Yep, it’s why I believe that IF Warner requested a trade last period and IF WCE were offering their first and future first (or something else as attractive), we should have taken it.

Whether that hypothetical happened or not no longer matters. For this year, I want the swans to appear deadly serious match a bid of $1.5 million so we get the best trade currency possible (especially if WCE get off the bottom of the ladder).

I think Parker leaving has given us space for 25. If Warner was on 500. .. We could restructure 25,26,27 for 3mil. WC cant offer any money for this year obviously. 1.5 for 26 27 doesn’t beat our deal by much as he gets a rise this year.

If that is what has happened he would have a contract that the bank would lend against.. (To buy a 3m property) not some in princaple agreement from WC that means nothing to a bank unless signed..which he cant do yet.

Unless it works differently ?

You keep banging (every year ad nauseum) on about us not signing a big high priced star.
Now you say it is not a good business decision.

Are our incumbent players worth less than players from other clubs?

Warner is going to get very well paid regardless of what he decides to do.

Like anyone, he will want to get paid as much as he can. But decisions like this are rarely based on money.

It isn't easy to find information on the AFL website about contracts and list lodgement dates, and what the rules are around renegotiating existing contracts.

Merrett just re-did his deal though.

No it’s not a a good business decision for Warner to lose 2 million dollars in earnings to re sign with the swans

Agree if you’re talking 1-200k. But the numbers that wce are rumoured to be offering are gonna be 5-600k more than what we will.

No way in earth we get close to the 1.5 mill mark

No manager in the world would let a player sign a deal for say a million a year if they have offers of 1.5 on the table

Every decent player in the league could get more money if they left their current club. For some reason though, very few players leave their clubs.

We have almost 20 players out of contract this season. There would be cap space to offer a very good deal to Warner.

Unless someone offers him stupid money, it would be unusual to say the least if he left for money.

The offer from wce is going to be / is north of 1.5. Hell the reports are bombers are offering Reid 2 mill per year.

Like I said it’s a hard sell to to turn up an offer that’s in all likelihood 500k more than what the swans can offer and back to home state

Can't he just go already! Or at least make a decision openly. The Swans games are going to be the footnote in the Chad Warner contract status articles for all of 2025 if not.

I personally think we've been here before, the meal ticket cashier and manager will win out. One year to go, and next to zero negotiating capital. Make the best of it and move on.

None of us know what West Coast can offer and what we can offer. They have their own players that they need to re-sign, including Reid.

We worry way too much about what other clubs might be doing. If Warner wants to play for us, we will offer him a very healthy contract and he will stay.

I think it’s a fair guesstimate that they have more room in the cap than what the swans do

I think they probably do as well.

But how often does a genuinely good player leave their club primarily because of money. If you exclude the expansion clubs, it almost never happens.

If we offer him a million+ a season and he still wants to leave, then he was leaving anyway regardless.

Well it won’t be about money , it will be “home sickness”

Gulden could have made himself the highest paid player in the league if he moved to Adelaide.

What could have Sam Darcy got if he had shopped himself? I doubt he is on anything close to the 1.5mil+ that a team would have paid to get him out of the Bulldogs.

The money aspect of these decisions are way overrated. The player decides where they want to play and then the manager gets them the best possible deal with that club.

The financial issue for us will be if other uncontracted players like Campbell and Sheldrick get squeezed out.

Those guys are already playing at “home”

You said that no manager is going to let a player sign a contract if they can get significantly more money elsewhere.

Gulden's manager and Darcy's manager, and heaps of others, did.

How much could Hayden Young get if he left Fremantle? He just extended for about 10 years.

Depends how much Errol was being offered ? Yea the years were there but the annual salary probably wouldn’t have been that far apart

Be more interesting if he takes his foot off the accelerator game wise to protect himself from injury this year, having opted to see out the year without a LT deal in place. He's rolling the dice a bit.
His manager should have had something honest drawn up where he got a 4 year deal, with an option to be traded if a WA club offered a top 6-7 pick next year (or the year after - whenever he sees himself heading home).

The Swans sign it to ensure a decent return in the trade and no walking through to the preseason draft to WC, he signs it to ensure some security, WA clubs still come in and pay that draft pic price, no issue. No media speculation all year (so long as they keep the trade clause quiet). Job done by all.
