Chad Warner
When the Sydney Swans swept up Chad Warner with pick 39 at the 2019 AFL Draft, they secured a youngster with an insatiable appetite for the contest. Warner attacks the ball and opponents with aggression and is relishing calling midfield bulls Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker his teammates at the Swans. Warner impressed for Western Australia in the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships, averaging 18.2 touches (50 per cent contested), 3.2 clearances and 6.8 tackles per game. He also tallied an average of 27.1 disposals, 6.4 clearances and 7.4 tackles per match at Colts level for East Fremantle in 2019. He earned his AFL debut against Richmond in Round 6 of the 2020 season, recording eight disposals and two tackles.

DOB: 19 May 2001

Like all things, I think this is true up to a point. I’m not sure what the golden rule, but I am guessing it is something like if your current club can get to within 90% of the other clubs offer, you generally stay. Once the disparity falls outside whatever range it is, then I think money can become a factor. In Warner’s case, given he clearly wants to return home eventually, I imagine the range is narrower than other players.

The curious thing for me in all this is that I don’t think Warner is worth $1.5m per year - which I am assuming would make him our highest paid player, and by some margin? I am not even sure Warner is currently in our 3 most important players.

I have inside knowledge, but I suspect the Swans thinking maybe the same. Especially if they want to maintain a balanced list and keep good morale amongst the stars who likely signed up for slightly unders. And the impression I get is that the Swans are pretty disciplined at staying within their valuation of a player (it’s different when they try to recruit externally).

I reckon the Swans are selling a chance at premiership glory, for Warner to stay with his mates a bit longer and a decent salary (probably equal highest for the club or there abouts). I reckon Warner is going to have to choose between that and the opportunity to move home, play with a really exciting developing list, and get paid a fair bit more in a city where the houses are a fair bit cheaper.

That’s a tough choice.
And ignore his girlfriend , she has to remember it's the swans that have got him to where he is

Some things are more important than football whether we like it or not, and his long tern girlfriend is part of his life. It's similar in life, you and I would make compromises for the partner we have. I'm not going to hold it against him if he wishes to follow his partner home, so long as he's transparent about it. I get it.

No manager in the world would let a player sign a deal for say a million a year if they have offers of 1.5 on the table
You do know that a manager is along the lines of a business advisor, yes? He can ADVISE Chad to take the 1.5, but he can't stop him from not taking it.

For the record - and I took it with a grain of salt when I was told, but I thought I'd share just to see the reactions .
A bloke on the cruise told me that one of the Swans people on the ship, let it slip in conversation, that Warner has already re-signed for two years. According to this bloke, the person accidentally said it to him and a group of five others and said too much to be able to back peddle.
As I said, I took it with a grain of salt as I just couldn't imagine the person whom he named, as being so loose lipped.

This morning on the radio when they reported that a young Swan had signed on, I got excited. Then they said it was Campbell. I'm happy that he's staying but wish it was Chad so that this circus will end!

Hypothetically let’s say allan goes to Brisbane for band 1 compo and wce finish 16th

How would everyone feel about pick 3* + 4 for Warner and swans FRP
Wouldn't want any picks for Warner because we're absolutely hopeless with top picks and the players we get with these picks will inevitably want to go home anyway and we'll be screwed all over again.

Best case scenario we get a couple of semi-decent players for him that cover some of our weaknesses.

Don’t see the value in signing him for 2 years . Wce won’t have the same value trade capital as what they will now . Especially with Tassie coming in

The value is that you get one of the best players in the league for two more seasons. Why would you not want that? Do you want to be GWS and lose good players for draft picks all the time?

I don’t want to lose warner at all but trading him in his prime durin the Tassie years is absolute worst case scenario.

I disagree but that’s the way it is I suppose. I think worst case scenario is losing him after this year. I’ll happily have him for 2 more years and get more than we paid for him in 2027 anyway.

Tasmania entering the competition has no impact on Warner's value.

And there is every chance West Coast is still a bottom 4 team in two years time, so their first pick would still be pretty early with or without Tasmania.

Well Tassie will have 11 of the first 15 picks so I’d argue it does affect his value . In the end warners value will be whatever picks wce have
