Callum Mills

Callum Mills is one of the best young players in the AFL. The QBE Sydney Swans Academy graduate won the 2016 AFL Rising Star award and was selected in the AFL Players’ Association’s 22Under22 team in three of his four eligible years. Mills is a small defender with uncompromising courage who’s also capable of shifting through the midfield. The New South Welshman was elevated to Sydney’s leadership group during the 2018 pre-season at the age of just 21, and he’s now a member of a five-man leadership panel alongside co-captains Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker and Dane Rampe, as well as Lance Franklin.

Callum Mills
DOB: 02 April 1997
DEBUT: 2016
DRAFT: #3, 2015 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: North Shore (NSW)

So it seems like he's had (and recovered) from a groin issue as well...

“His shoulder’s good. He had a bit of a groin problem in his rehab as he was coming back, and then he had his calf, which set him back a bit. He's still a few weeks away from playing, but we need to give him a good training block. He just needs to get some really strong work under his belt, so that'll take a few weeks now. Hopefully we'll see how he goes over the next few weeks and introduce him back into gameplay.”

Mids aren't going to be able to protect the backs every game. We lack backmen depth and maybe height ie McCartin out Francis in, Fox out Francis in, Rampe out Francis in or Francis not cutting the mustard put an undersized Roberts. Should be obvious from watching a few of the last games that it would be better to have Mills down back than Francis, Roberts and Fox (although I thought fox was good). Its just an opinion but having Mills down back would improve the defense.
Francis out of defenCe is obvious

It’s always a few weeks away.

He needs to come back through the 2s in my opinion for a number of reasons. First, he's missed a lot of footy. I also hate the message it sends to our younger players when players are picked on seniority. Still pretty annoyed at Longmire for dropping Logan for an underdone Reid in the 22 grand final. Not that it would have changed the result but I still think it sent a horrible message to the rest of the playing group in the lead up to the game.

Also this stupid injury was Callum's fault and he needs to earn back some respect. Still shaking my head he was made captain after that. If it's good enough for Parker it's good enough for him.

Any injuries to our current 22 might change the equation obviously but I don't think we should toy with form or structure when players have been delivering results.

Underdone is putting it kindly the man could not put up more than a slow jog

It still remains the worst selection i have ever seen for a GF.

Mills could easily be eased back from HB playing seniors

It is going to be a really interesting to see what they do when he is back and fit. If he wasn't club captain, then I'd absolutely agree 2s is where he would come back through. But that element makes it difficult. The fact he is also such an important player around the ground (i.e. he just isn't a midfielder), and has that ability to play back I think will see him back in very quickly.

Might depend on when he is ready - if our good form continues, and the mixed 'anyone can beat anyone' continues below us on the ladder, we could easily be in a position several weeks from finals where we can start to actively manage players through the last few weeks - giving rest to players, and giving some on the edges at the current point in time (him, Parker, Campbell) a sustained run of time in the senior team.

What a great position to be in - our midfield firing on all cylinders, despite two critical midfielders not having kicked a ball in anger in seniors this year.

When they finally got to team selection in the last 60 seconds of today presser, Horse said Mills is in back in team training, and he's been pulling up well from the training block he's been doing, and it'll really ramp up over the next 2 weeks.
To be fair to the journos in today's presser, it was important for them to know if Horse actually does rate Heeney, Warner & Gulden, or if he is just selecting them for shits and giggles.

Your keyboard still having problems? Caps fixed numbers transposed.
We had an idiot working in our office and he pulled the keys off and moved them around on all the keyboards for most of the staff of 20. A few days before he left. Was a bit confusing trying to get your keyboard keys back to their original positions.

And the Hector is still on the list and is threatening to return and let us down again

I think it's likely Mills plays a tune-up game in the VFL but I wouldn't be opposed to him coming straight back in if the coaches are confident in his fitness. He's a top 5 player for us so there is no doubt about whether he comes in like there obviously was with Parker.

As for who, well the coaches will need to make that decision whether he comes in via the VFL or not because he wouldn't be there for long. We're flying on top of the ladder so whoever loses their spot will be unlucky, but the captain isn't going to be kept out of the side just because we're winning games.

If he pulls Heeney out of midfield and into the forward line again in favour of Mills or Parker I think he deserves to be sacked.

Should just put Mills into half back and Parker half forward.

Are you saying Bradman could not score a century from position 11 and Mills could not hold the entire defence of any AFL team to 0?
With Pigeon at number 10, don’t think so. Now Mills has very broad shoulders but these shoulders are also in recovery - so maybe not just yet. We need to protect these shoulders for the cup hoist September 28. Priorities Rusty, cmon!
