Well they certainly didn't change between the 70's, 80's and 90's.

And as with anything from the past - on game day tactics, fitness and skill levels, the best team of the 70s, 80s or 90s would struggle to beat the worst team of today.

(stands back and waits for outraged reactions)

Are you suggesting Rutten is indicative of modern day full backs?

No, he was the first Crow defender that popped into my head. Scarlett is though and he is a stopper and an attacker. There is absolutely no reason as to why Gav can't stop his opponent and still be an attacking option when we have the ball.

Not only is there no reason why he can't do it, the simple fact is that if he doesn't do it, he may as well buy a one-way plane ticket to 1974.

Yeah I could really imagine Melbourne absolutely shitting on our 96 Premiership team.

Yeah we can be all romantic and doey eyed about that. Just as Collingwood people will tell you that the great 4-in-a-row team of the depression era would thrash Melbourne of today. And they'd be very wrong too.

But thanks for being first to fulfill my prediction. Now for some even more hysterical reactions...

Did Gav do something to annoy you, snrub? Normally you are the strongest of defenders of all of our players and staff (well, perhaps 2nd strongest), but you've taken the opportunity to put the sly boots into Gav in a few of your posts in this thread.

FWIW, I can't understand all the criticism of one of our younger players who had an average season in a team that had a crap season. Especially one of our young players who has a great deal of upside.

There's no discernible difference between the Gav knockers in this thread and the boring Hansen knockers who take every opportunity to voice their ignorant opinion.

I know you're not one of the latter, phaz, so why be one of the former?

Just my 2 cents, but I'd say there is. Hansen is under rated here, and Urquhart is over rated here. The two schools of thought came out of the fact that Hansen's initial appearance was marred by unmet expectations, whereas Urquharts first year could be characterised by expectations exceeded.

However, if you only look at this year, Hansen was finally shaping up to meet those heavy expectations before the injury, after which he never regained that momentum. By contrast, Urquhart's year would probably be more characterised by a bit of stagnation. While the fact that the team had a crap year probably had a bit to do with it, his performances didn't IMO life up to the promise of an Army award nom. and a rising star nom.

Don't get me wrong, I like Urquhart as a player, and i'm as excited as anyone about the potential he possesses. I agree with the earlier poster who said that if he comes on, he'd become one of our most important players, but some folks here seem to carry on like he already has the runs on the board. His disposal efficiency is not good enough for an outside playmaker role. On the bright side, I think a bit of that inefficiency comes from selecting overly ambitious options. That means if he finds that range, he could come on quickly. I think Urquhart is over rated on this board because some posters talk as if he has already got there...

I think Gav is an excellent prospect but as some excellent judges of junior talent among us (North Bhoy, Windsock) have pointed out, he needs to get on his bike and real quick. I think we romanticise Gav as well as Robbie Tarrant based on training ground form or a couple of speccy highlights. I am also becoming more aware that we lost a couple of big headed superstars in the making this off season, mostly due to their over inflated sense of self-worth. So we have to keep talent in perspective. And I also think that Gav is not our best option as a shutdown defender (not by a long shot) so I'd much rather we use his natural attributes to serve us. That's not necessarily in the midfield, it may well be, but there are other creative roles that he can be given. It's a fair question that you raise, but I will not say that Gav doesn't have what it takes or that he is the reason we lost a game or that he is unworthy of wearing the jumper or any other such hysterical rant. I think he could be a B&F winner possibly, but he needs to become an attacking force for that to happen (though I'm sure Brady says hi to that!)

As far as small defenders go I really like the look of Cruize Garlett. He may not be quite as athletic as Urquart but he has far more composure and has no difficulty finding the pill.

If Gav cant move into the midfield this year he might be spending alot of time in the Magoos'.

Really? ok whats his best spot on the team? Also from what Ive seen he uses the ball far better than Urquart, and when tackled or put under pressure doesnt just give it back to the opposition. If you dont think hes a defender thats fair enough, but from what I saw he did a great job mopping up down back when he played last year.

Jesus. Are we that impatient? Maybe the experts know more than the average Joe, but Gav is definitely one of our best prospects on our list and is 21 years old. He started from a long way back when he first got to the club and suffered from OP during that time. This time next year, people will be eating their words.

He's twice the player Garlett is.

Hi. I was hoping someone could shead some light on how Gavin Urquhart's pre-season has been so far? I have been following him closely the last couple of seasons and he seems like he has a heap of potential. What are his chances of holding down a regular spot in the midfield? Cheers.

I've seen enough of this guy now to say he is not up to AFL standard. Turns it over, soft, panics and fumbles which is a recipe for shitness.

Time for him to play VFL and bring in someone who at least can go in hard and make a contest and not be a witches hat like Gav.

Terribly disappointing:thumbsdown:

Don't let the Super Gav crew hear that.

Looks like Gav needs some time in the magoos, would rather Pratt with all his shitfulness play than Super Gav, at least you know you get an effort.

Lets see if the torching comes out just as much for Gav as it did Hansen?

He is not doing anything well at the moment. I am not sure what his role in the side is... does he even know? Must be dropped. We have depth in our squad, he cannot possibly be retained.

Yeah bad game today for urqs.....I dunno the rain may have had something to do with and him coming from Qld. Not making excuses for the bloke but I guess Scotty boy will work it out and assess the situation. You would think that type of game is suited to the smaller player and urq and many others I might add let the team down especially that 1st half.
