I have several questions. How many of you experts have actually played footy at this elite level? How many of you attend team meetings where strategies are discussed? How many of you are aware of instructions given to players? Seems to me your observations are made on a shallow knowledge base. If you are a true Kangas supporter, look at positive plays and stop the uninformed criticism made from the stands!

I have played senior football in the next best competition after the AFL. Have played with and against current AFL footballers and been coached by former AFL players. I am aware that different players are given different instructions and I don't consider myself an expert, but I do consider myself a passionate North Melbourne supporter like many others.

I buy my membership every year and put money into the club and wear my heart on my sleeve and I just call it as I see it! When we win I walk away tickle pink and love every single player on the list. When we lose it pisses me off and im looking for someone to blame and rightly so. I am a supporter of the North Melbourne football club and the club wouldn't survive without the passionate supporters that we have.

I also disagree and think you don't have to have played football at the highest level to know what you are talking about and PLYMPTON if you think we are all going to sit in the stands and behave and talk like pompous gentleman at a game of aussie rules football then your kidding yourself. GO ROOS!

He shouldn't have been in the side for round 1. He should have been a late withdrawel, because he simply can't play wet weather footy. I am not his biggest fan and never have been. I went to the game on sunday at AAMI and had seats in the members with a great view and I have watched the replay. I walked away from the game saying this??

Ill take a 14 point loss after being 50 pts behind

I Hate having an interstate game in round 1

Bring on St Kilda and I hope Koschitzke gets rubbed out

Shit day for footy

Did Swallow even play today. Was he a late withdrawel??

Why did blokes try and take marks in their hands when they are by themselves in the terrible conditions.

The backline just needs to play the percentages more often

Players had very poor body language at times for AFL footballers

Warren takes an impossible mark one minute and drops a chest mark the next. He needs to get consistancy and do the basics better, but he has endeavour.

I love Ziebell

I have a man crush on Anthony

Daniel Wells is so over rated and very soft

Boomer is going to have a big year

Petrie a huge loss

Wow I just vent on Bay 13 and move on.

I'm not too disappointed with his progress, although he has seemed to go a little bit backwards, but maybe that's just our rising expectations of him?

From his draft, some non KPP players taken in between Urquhart and Goldstein are Proud, Djerrkura, Edwards, Mackenzie, J.Morton and Alwyn Davey. Judging on how these guys are going, I wouldn't be too worried about Gav just yet, he's pretty much ahead of all of them, and one would maybe have him on par with Grigg from Carlton, who was taken a few picks earlier.

Of course the man has a lot to improve on and prove to supporters, but surely we can't be ferociously doom-saying after round 1, give the bloke a chance.

Agreed. I remember Gav's first few games, and how my first reaction was that we had really found a player here. I still think he'll get to where we want him to be. I don't expect miracles from our guys and I subscribe to the viewpoint that you back ALL of your players and forgive them for their mistakes. They are human after all and they're doing better than you are. Well, speaking for myself anyway.

I just don't understand the cutting down of those who play for YOUR club. I won't do it, not when I know or suspect that many of them must read these sorts of comments and it's surely not what they need to see. AFL must be hard enough as it is without your own supporters turning on you.

We are North supporters and we need to support our players, not cut them down. We chose to barrack for this club, and we can't influence the selection table, so whoever gets picked, back them 100% while they're in the side, and forgive their mistakes and lesser performances.

I think Gav's doing just fine. I just wonder what would have happened if the negative stuff on Lachie had been responded to with being dropped from the team. He wouldn't have been in our best last week and on a trajectory to be an outstanding rebounding defender with size, set to form an important part of our backline for some years.

Allow these guys to make mistakes, invest some time in them. Most of them are very new, and will come good.

Based on the last few posts, if you support the club and never played AFL - don't have an opinion.

Might as well shut down the forum then.

You can do that if you wish. I'd rather be positive and back our guys. I just think it's pointless and counter productive for fans to trash their own players on the 'net when they have no influence over their selection in the side.

"There is also a suggestion North Melbourne is preparing to offload promising talent Gavin Urquhart, and will look to bring in draft picks over players if it can land a suitable trade for him and Hale."

From article http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/103448/default.aspx

Obviously, this means diddly squat. But, it is the first 'official' suggestion that Gav could be on the move.

I'd be surprised if we didnt at least ask if anyone wanted them.

Not saying we should push him and Hale out but see what the market is offering.

Agreed.

I'd be disappointed to see Gav go however. I think his potential is probably greater than the potential of a second or third round pick from this years draft, which realistically, is what we'd be looking at.

Must say that I am really a fence sitter when it comes to Gav. Can see some quality but needs to put it together in the big time. Just not sure whether we should keep or sell.
I'm a bit the same.

He is the type we need. Outside player with the skills to be a very effective run and carry player who can absolutely thump it. However the signs of this talent have been sporadical over the past 2 years.

I question whether he has the hunger and smarts to reach the next level and begin to fulfill his talents.

Hopefully we float his name during trade week with the full intention of keeping him. Having Gav realise he is on thin ice might be the kick up the backside he needs.

The problem can sometimes arise when this stuff is leaked to the media before the player ever knew he was being shopped around. In theory, nothing wrong with shopping a player around, if it can be done smartly, and not like Laidley handled the McIntosh situation a couple of years ago.

Now that Gav's name has even been mentioned in one article, even if it's untrue, I hope we spoke to him to tell him that we are going to try to see what we can get for him, or if this is a made up story, then we can honestly tell him this is NOT true.

Not handling trade week well makes it difficult to negotiate with other players, and expect any loyalty from them.

Pre-season rumours aren't always correct, especially those about clubs shopping contracted players around.

If Norths chasing draft picks then this is the year to trade as most of the top clubs are chasing experienced players.

I like the idea of Sherman, Id be happy with a swap for Gav.

Ok , l'll prohbibly get my head bitten of here but what about either patrick vezpremi,or nathan dejurka for Gav? l dont know much about either player but after reading a few threads on this and other boards, these 2 seem to be the players supporters are interested in..

If Gav goes to Sydney he will blossom, absolutely no doubt.

I think there is an emphases on picks because the club realise when it comes to a premiership in the next few years, we need two more good kids at least to cement a chance, so they are probably going to do there best to secure two kids in the mould of Harper, Smetdz, Pitt etc.

I think North would be more interested in swapping a couple of players for picks, otherwise we only go into the draft with 3 picks. I still think it is a bit early in the race for us to be trading for players.

Harding and Rawlings turn 30 next year, Pratt 28 and Urqs 23. While he may not be in the best side for 2010 or 2011, if we are patient with him and use 2011 to work on his weaknesses there could be the opportunity open up after next year.

The only concern would be if guys like Macmillan, White, Kennedy, etc are starting to pass him as preferred second tier options. If he has been squeezed out just due to sheer fantastic recruitment over the last 3 years then it may be better for him and us to part ways.

But, atm I am not convinced that there is no position for him in our best side in the future.
