His nephew needs to teach him how to kick. Dan rarely 'catapults' it like Short or Houli use to, but he always place it exactly where it needs to go like Leon Cameron did.

Two years ago dan did the same as a forward. He’d receive the ball 60-80 out. Put his hand up and then hang the ball up high.

A lot of posts too harsh on Maurice here. He will get easier assignments than that, and is 6 months shy of 21yo, so he will be improving all the time. Clearly has some things to work on but imo he is well and truly AFL standard.
Maybe his tackling is out of this world but been a forward he needs to kick goals as well as defend which he doesn't do. I hope his not another one skill wonder like George.

He has 2 goals + 2 goal assists = 4 for the season. 1.3 per game. He would be aiming for about 1.5-1.8 per game, which would be a good return for a defensive forward. But he has played in 2 very low scoring matches, where 15 & 16 goals have been scored. Over time this should all normalise. Go back to the higher scoring final last year he kicked a great goal amongst 1.1 and a goal assist and layed 4 tackles. He has played 20 games, some of those as sub, and his goals + assists figures are probably around 1.6-1.7 average per full game, which looks healthy enough to me for his role. Castagna for eg averaged 1.36 over his career, let's say 1.4 per full game forward.

This player is not our problem. He may not get picked every game this season but to me he is tracking brilliantly overall.

Goals? 0.9 I think

Has gone at 40% and 50% disp eff. For the last two rounds from 5 and 6 disposals and provides zero threat in the air .

For a bloke who chases at lightning speed, I cant understand how het gets caught with the ball so often.
He's fast, but not quick. The 'speed' of AFL is not in how fast people can run, it's how quickly the can react to a bounce of the ball, how quickly they can get the ball to boot, how quickly they can change direction. It's speed of mind. MRJ is often taking an extra step or pause before kicking the ball to steady up, or assess his options.

It happens to many players when they first come into the game - eventually most work it out.

Got to laugh, Daniel had a terrible game against the pies, dont get me wrong I'm a huge Daniel fan but we need to take the rose coloured glasses off.

These are damning stats for Daniel if we want to just lay the boots into Junior

Worse DE%, team high clangers, team high turn overs, less pressure acts and the same number of tackles. 15 of Daniels 25 possessions were clangers or turnovers LOL yet because he got it 25 times at half back we think he had a decent game.

We kicked 1.3 on half a game of wet weather footy. Of course D. Rioli's possessions were going at low DE. We had nobody to kick to and when we did we either missed them or they dropped it. Rioli's possessions are normally very creative, so not damning stats at all, just par for the course of that night.

It's why I laugh, there's always an excuse for some players when no excuse for others.

Collingwoods ball use in the wet didnt seem to be an issue. LOL

Just posted on the Roast thread just on this, so better to not repeat myself.

Collingwood didn't because their coach backed them in and they have many very good skilful kickers in their side. We have quite a lot of good footballers but average by foot and the wet just emphasises this. Rioli to me is a very creative kick normally so I'll give him a weeks grace.

He’s quick enough that’s most certainly not his problem , he’s misfired pulling the trigger lately which has been the diff , a few real blunders he needs to get out of the system

while 7 clangers aren't ideal, it is from 25 disposals. whereas for mrj it's almost a buy 2 disposals get 1 free clanger

and since you're being pedantic i thought i would be too - the person you were talking to mentioned drioli teaching mrj to kick, and would you look at that

looks like dan rioli was a better kick!

no 15 of 25 disposals were not clangers or turnovers, because the stats literally say he got 12 effective disposals, and i believe non effective disposals aren't always clangers/turnovers, as spoiled balls from <40m kicks aren't considered effective. kicks over 40m have to go to a 50/50 contest or better for the team, so a lynch 1v2 wouldn't be considered an effective kick, i'd assume it becomes an effective kick if he wins the 1v2 but i'm not actually sure. also i think all turnovers are clangers but not all clangers are turnovers since clangers can include dropped marks

and i do agree that dan rioli did have a below average game but i also want maurice dropped, if he survives another week and doesn't have a great game i'd hope he gets dropped, give someone else a chance

Good call fair enough.

However 57.9% isnt that great to be teaching someone who kicked at 50% lol Youve also conveniently brushed past turnovers, funny that. Turnovers IMO are far worse than a clanger kick, turnovers generally hurt you on the scoreboard in today's modern game.

I stand by my call D.Rioli didnt have a good game against the pies, in fact it was pretty shit. This board is quite fickle, it was only a few years ago D.Rioli was where M.Rioli is right now and every one wanted him dropped.
