There were people on this thread daying he should be traded or banned for 6 weeks.
Yeah that was wrong. Getting judged without all the facts, he will improve and I look forward to seeing that.

A very good game in the VFL today playing midfield. What MRJ needs to do over the Summer is do those half or full marathons going up and down hills with KMac and JGTI to build up his endurance. Needs to be able to build a solid four quarter game.
Unfortunately for MRJ he has been designated as a small pressure foward due to his size and speed and ability to kick goals as a junior
I have personally always thought he is a midfielder that need time and experience and build his tank to play that position.

Its our pressure foward game thats killed of his attacking instincts and hopefully they play him another 1-2 games in the VFL as a mid and as you mentioned get him to build his tank to play mid/fwd similar to Shai's role and take over from Prestia in 2 years time

Yeah all true, but he can’t comeback after the offseason looking like he did this year. He’s got to put in some really hard yards as I still believe he’s got the untapped talent to be an A grader. When he was on for about 2.5 quarters today we were in a good position to win. Then he dropped off and they got away to a three goal lead. Then he got a second wind in th e last 15 minutes and we charged home. He has the class and skills, but just no tank atm.

Bring them to The Funny Farm as I’ve got some hills here for them to climb and work on. Get the buggers to do some fencing and obnoxious weed clearing. 😂 I lost 30kg in six months and Dr reckons I’m fitter than a 30 yo bloke. 😉

Just don't see him as a midfielder. He's not that clean, a pretty average kick, not that composed.

Great tackler and pretty quick, his skills suit being a pressure forward he's just needing to build a bit more ball finding and another goal a game into his game averages.

I'll be hugely surprised if he ever made it as a mid long term.

Well you would have to ask is Cotchin , taranto , Prestia great kicks of the ball ?

Cotchin is just about the cleanest one grab player with his hands and ground balls we have, he was the ultimate class and toughness but not necessarily by foot. Hands and movement are/were elite.

Taranto and Prestia are elite runners and ball winners and again very clean contested players in the contest and one grab gatherers of the footy in traffic.

MRJ to me lacks a ton of composure and fumbles a lot.

I'm not writing him off as an AFL player, just don't think he has the qualities to be a mid long term.

Prestia very much yes, and moves through traffic like it's not there.

But as much as I'm loving Taranto's work, I wouldn't call him clean. I find him pretty fumbly a lot of the time. Once it's in hand he's solid enough, and he's bloody fantastic defensively, but he could really improve his first touch of the football work.

Bakes is probably our cleanest as far as taking possession goes. He's a bit like the Indonesian government - some of his decision-making can be a little dubious at times, but you can't question his execution skills. :D

No different to you to your weak comment hey?

Nothing in it, he’s young and will learn. I’m happy he has a bit of emotion with the situation anyway, nothing wrong with it.
I’m more with how he reacts, is he packing his bags or digging in. I bet the later.
Can’t wait till he proves a few wrong.

MJ showed good signs last year when he rotated through thr middle when Shedda went forward and managed to have an impact in short spurts. I'm not sure why we haven't tried this when he has struggled to get into the game this year.

Thought MJ was great in the final Q which shows he can run out games. Finally using the VFL for what is should be used for, trying players in different positions that will help their game overall. Cumberland next.

This can also be detrimental to them (Ross at half back /facepalm) but yeah, it's good to see here and there. I'd love to see MRJ in the seniors as a midfielder and see what havoc he can wreak.

some people are stupid. unfortunately

Well our centre clearances are horrid. Just watched a bit of kosi at naarm play well at centre clearances after being unsighted as a small fwd.

Great that MRJ has been pulled out of the small fwd role. It's not a fun role.
If Castagna had stayed he could have reinvented himself.

Dusty and Shai rotate mid and fwd. It took Shai a few years to develop.
Let's see what they do with Maurice

The making of Shai Bolton was when Fly decided to move him in the guts at HT in a VFL game against Box Hill 2018 . We were pushing shit up hill that day and he lit up the park leaving everyone totally gobsmacked it was so spectacular. Has never looked back since and I’m not saying Rioli will reach the same heights, but it will definitely improve his game, involvement, concentration and endurance.

Thats what we want to see

Maurice Rioli (23 disposals, 13 contested possessions, seven tackles, six clearances)

"He led us for contested possessions, tackles and clearances. He played on ball for the majority of the day and provided us with plenty of pressure in and around the footy. It was great to see him show his strengths further up the field."
