Gotta cut him some slack. It literally couldn't be a worse scenario for a young defender to be playing. There is no senior players back their with experience to direct him, the whole defensive system would such as handovers etc would have been set up around the mccartins and rampe etc.

Normally he would have to come in and fit into a defensive scheme, atm he has to be it

We will know the answer to him by the end of this season, he should get plenty of games under his belt to show what he has.

IF he can show some transferrable skills at the AFL during our current injury crisis then I'm happy to bank he'll be a long time player for us. He's playing under horrible circumstances. Happy to back the young fella in. One thing he was known for was his leadership in his junior years, hopefully he can utilise a bit of those skills in our current situation.

Given all our outs, we need someone to fill that gap in. Sometimes the slightest opportunity will provide the spark he needs.

Lloyd? Cunningham? Fox? Even Florent - he's a senior player these days and by now he's been playing down back long enough to understand how the structures function.

I'd like to see Will play in the mids for a VFL game.
When he played the last quarter (a few games ago) , he looked a different player.

I'd love if we could try him on the wing.
I agree. It's clear he can't defend a leading opponent at AFL level. However he is actually not slow from what I've seen and his kicking can be exquisite. Size wise, he would be a great target on a flank and potentially a hard match up for a smaller winger. I guess the big question would be his tank and work at ground level. But before we write him off, it would be good for him to have one final chance for the remainder of this year.

Our version of Stewy Dew.

I don't think we'll be seeing him again at AFL level unless even Melican gets injured in the short-term. Once Rampe and Tom McCartin are back, he won't get a look in. I hate how harsh I sound but I guess we saw why he wasn't getting much of a look despite people on here crying out for him. I just don't think he's AFL level unfortunately

He's got all the attributes of a great player so it'd be a shame if we can't find a place for him in the team.

Probably should've found it by now to be honest, he's been on our list for years. Many players on our list come and go without being able to establish a regular start in our first team, and Gould is likely one of them. Just the cut-throat nature of trying to play at the highest level. Not a slight on Gould whose remained professional his entire stay and gave it his best shot to date... I mean, I'd rather him on our list than a dickhead like Elijah Taylor for example, who was probably the more talented

I feel like he's possibly a bit of a tweener. If he had a tiny bit more pace we could play him as that medium defender but he lacks a bit of height to go with the bigger boys.
I wonder if he sticks on the list for another year given he is solid at VFL level, even though he is likely fifth in line at KPD. If he's doing uni part time up here he might be fine with that. And we might be fine having a solid citizen to play VFL - Need some older guys to provide a base for the new recruits to learn from and play off.

Unlocking his inner Matthew Pavlich

Wonder if he's any chance to be retained if he finishes strong

Ive watched a bit of the last few VFL games.. and Goulds move up forward may have just saved his career..
I think he had 20+ disposals, 10+ marks, 4 goals and a good number of tackles,, not to mention a few goal assists on the weekend (cant remember his exact stats, but they were bloody good)
He's clearly a very good footy player but is that 'in-between' size and speed.. Maybe up forward is his role?

Amartey, McDonald, McLean, Buller and Gould offers a lot of potential and some decent depth in the key forwards. (Reid also)
Im not as bullish as most on here about Mclean. He had his best game yet last weekend but is still uncontracted.
If Reid retires (possible) and if McLean gets traded (also possible) then I reckon theres a very good chance that Gould stays on.
