Will Gould

Player Profile

A hard-running key defender departed South Australian club Glenelg for the Sydney Swans at the 2019 AFL Draft, joining the club via pick 26. Will Gould averaged 21.5 disposals, 4.5 marks and 7.2 rebound 50s per match as South Australia’s captain in the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships, a glowing campaign resulting in back-to-back All Australian selection. He also averaged 19.7 possessions, 5.2 marks and 6.5 rebound 50s per match for Glenelg in 2019, while he recorded a match-high eight rebound 50s in his side’s SANFL Grand Final victory over Port Adelaide.

I feel like you've kind of clarified your own point of interest there Kingy.

Maybe he is better than he's shown but if he hasn't shown it, then why would the Swans rate him?

FWIW I think he showed more as a forward in about one month of VFL action than he did in nearly four years in defence.

He doesn't have a tonne going for him physically, in that he's not quick or athletic, but he can clunk a mark and can be a beautiful kick. Playing forward those limitations don't matter as much and his few strengths can be capitalised on more.

But with our three main talls going forward signed up, as well as Buller, whether the club think he's shown enough in that regard to warrant another contract remains to be seen.

I think he is done here, meant more would another club take a punt

I've been thinking about Will Gould too. Has anyone been monitoring his social media accounts to get any clue of what he is up to?

I think if we haven't heard any news of him being delisted within the next week it means they are considering retaining him, subject to other moves. I think the same goes for any other out of contract players. I reckon after the B&F tomorrow they will move to announce definite delistings fairly quickly, there's nothing else to wait for.

Saw an IG story of him on the family farm a week or so ago, but nothing since.

Our tall forwards...., Logan, McLean, Amartey, Buller. - Only 4, which is 1-2 short
We dont seem to be in the market for trading in any tall forwards. I wouldn't be surprised if we keep 1 or both of Reid and Gould.

Thought his form over the last 4-5 games up forward in the VFL was very promising. Tackled (that hurt), plenty of possessions, took marks, played up the ground a bit, Kicked Goals and offered up goal assists.. Hes a big body, hes strong, Hes a good footy player
I wonder what is said in his exit meeting? maybe - get really fit??

I suspect he’s a delist.

BUT

If he’s retained (and I hope he is), I suspect the message is “work hard on your forward craft” - as his form when shifted forward was promising.

Wouldn't be surprised if we delist and re-rookie as a last chance, but I feel you are spot on with the delisting.

Goodnight sweet prince

Agree. He is a goner. He really has some craft but his body shape and in between height stuffed his prospects.

Whichever SANFL Team picks him up will have a cult figure for the next decade.

Played at Glenelg prior to being drafted so could step straight into the big big boots now left vacant by the second coming of the Pinkstar.

Not surprised - but still a bit disappointed.

Of all the de-listings, I felt Gould was the one with most upside.

He’d looked pretty damaging after the late season shift forward.

But - you can’t keep ‘em all. It’s a brutal business this AFL.

My thoughts exactly. Glad our list managers are making the tough calls though. Better to get it wrong than not risk the hard call.

I can absolutely see Gould starring in the SANFL. Maybe he'll get a second chance, either sooner, or later.

Man this is why I should leave the scouting and decisions to the coaches and professionals.

Of all the drafts we've had I thought Will Gould was the most promising of all because he played in such an unusual way and he was the full back captain for South Australia. Whereas I thought Chad would be useless (until I saw his training videos).

Just goes to show what I know.

It sucks for the lad getting delisted when you realise your dream of playing at the top level is over, but that's the sport unfortunately.

But, conversely to the opinions above, I seen in the two full games he played for us this season as to why he wasn't getting much of a look-in; he wasn't really AFL standard, to be honest. Lot's of people on this board don't really think much of Melican but Gould made way in the team for him, so...

“Not much point in coming back”: Why delisted Swan is looking for new opportunities

Now that's a classy way to accept what's happened. Didn't bag the club, didn't bad mouth anyone or anything to do with the club.
Hope he gets another chance and makes the most of his opportunities .

Tom Mitchell take note.

you mean Brownlow and Premiership winning Tom Mitchell?

Seems like a good enough bloke, but sounds that the penny didn't drop soon enough for Gould. 4yrs in the system he's had plenty of opportunity to impress despite his game time at AFL level.

Hopefully he does get picked up by someone else
Agree. I wish Gould the very best and hope another club gives him a chance. If he goes on to be successful I'd be genuinely happy.
