Player Profile

A hard-running key defender departed South Australian club Glenelg for the Sydney Swans at the 2019 AFL Draft, joining the club via pick 26. Will Gould averaged 21.5 disposals, 4.5 marks and 7.2 rebound 50s per match as South Australia’s captain in the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships, a glowing campaign resulting in back-to-back All Australian selection. He also averaged 19.7 possessions, 5.2 marks and 6.5 rebound 50s per match for Glenelg in 2019, while he recorded a match-high eight rebound 50s in his side’s SANFL Grand Final victory over Port Adelaide.

Door may have cracked open for a senior game up forward. Amartey and Buller likely not available, McCartin out which may mean Francis goes back, leaving a forward position available.

Interesting idea but I think Melican comes in for McCartin. However, has Gould kicked multiple goals every single game since he was moved forward? Or did he only kick one last week? Anyway, he has been prolific and he is a proper footballer, at least at VFL level. Definitely given the coaches and list managers something to think about.

I think Melican would be a good shot to come in for McCartin after a couple of reserves games. Francis would stay forward and Melican straight swap for McCartin. But good on Gould for putting himself in the frame after looking well and truly gone halfway through the year.

I agree that's probably more likely, but Francis doesn't look convincing forward and may be preferred to Melican down back pending match-ups.

Either way it's an intriguing option - imagine if he came in and booted a few?

I certainly agree that Francis isn't a forward. I really respect what he's done this year for us - he looks happy, comfortable and trusted within the club and he's playing better, more consistent football than at any other point of his career but he's just not a forward. Really solid backman though. My sense, however, is that Longmire would trust him more than Gould to contribute as a forward so close to a finals series. So if Melican is right to play and McCartin is suspended, that just makes more sense.

The story of Gould coming in, kicking 3 or 4, winning himself another contract on the back of it from a club (us or otherwise) and going on to have an actual senior career is enticing though. I'd love to see that romantically.

And overlook Melican? No, thank you. Melican was in good form yesterday and is our most accountable KPD from the 2s.
If we're going by this week Melican will come in. I'm just saying Arnold deserves a spot over Gould, not necessarily advocating he come in this week (although if anyone has a niggle this would be the perfect week)

Gould up forward has been impressive as he gets more comfortable. He certainly has a prescence and this week might be the ideal time to see how he can handle it at AFL level.

Arnold has bumped Gould out at the VFL level. What would make Gould ahead of him at AFL level?
AFL experience counts for a bit.

And I don’t agree Arnold has bumped Gould out. Gould was shifted forward as he provides a target to help our struggling young mids. Which has worked.

Notable also that Gould still gets moved back into defence (Sam Reid style) when it’s time to shut up shop.

I’ve watched every recent VFL game & whilst Arnold has been OK, my view is that Gould has been better.

Since moving forward he has kicked:

2.0
3.1
4.0
1.0
2.1

12.2

Melican > Gould > Arnold for a key defensive post at this stage.

Melican’s form in the VFL is OK.

Really? Lewis got a bit of ball yesterday but thought he was beaten by his Oppo. Thought Arnold looked better and was our best the week before. He is also a better intercept mark and more mobile.

The Dees forwads are not tall. If McDonald gets a run he will be too mobile for Lewis. Oh well I guess Melican will get the gig this week and Francis will stay forward.

Of the two, Gould seems like he is a better forward than Francis. Much better kick and can throw his weight about.

Personally, I think its a bit of shiny new toy syndrome with Arnold. His limitations haven't yet been exposed at AFL level, whereas Melican's have.

Gould is somewhere in between - we've seen a fair bit of him - but he's performed very well in a new role since we last saw him at AFL level.

Be interested if he is on an AFL list here, I think he is better than shown, Swans dont seem to rate him though
I feel like you've kind of clarified your own point of interest there Kingy.

Maybe he is better than he's shown but if he hasn't shown it, then why would the Swans rate him?

FWIW I think he showed more as a forward in about one month of VFL action than he did in nearly four years in defence.

He doesn't have a tonne going for him physically, in that he's not quick or athletic, but he can clunk a mark and can be a beautiful kick. Playing forward those limitations don't matter as much and his few strengths can be capitalised on more.

But with our three main talls going forward signed up, as well as Buller, whether the club think he's shown enough in that regard to warrant another contract remains to be seen.
