I was thinking of draftees who got drafted with pre-existing long term injuries. Where they join a new club and are immediately watching from the sidelines and miss that shared experience. The worst thing is that a lot of his training will be individual so the shared experiences will be a bit limited. It will take some effort to ameliorate that.

I don't think it's unreasonable to feel a sense of 'season over' doom & gloom where Dattoli is concerned. That's his pre-season effectively wiped out. Go back over the journey to find an eighteen year old who has managed to have any meaningful impact in his first year with no pre-season... I don't imagine there'd be many at all.
We just have to hope for the best and be thankful it's not a more serious injury at this stage.
Hopefully his injury is less serious than theirs were.Exactly! Especially when you see how Buller and Arnold went with similar injuries last year
We'll be lucky if it's not career over. Have we screwed up another first round pick in a super strong draft? It kinda feels like it. I don't understand how this doesn't get picked up in pre-vetting.I don't think it's unreasonable to feel a sense of 'season over' doom & gloom where Dattoli is concerned. Both Campbell and Gulden had to take time out in their first year due to stress fractures. It happens when a young body takes on a heavy training load and he won't be the last one. Unfortunately, there weren't any mature-age draftees in the first round this year (or any other year) so it is what it is and isn't anybody's fault - least of all the recruiters. We'll be lucky if it's not career over. If I understand correctly the draftees are medically checked by the AFL and the results made available to all clubs. I doubt that susceptibility to stress injury would show up, although an existing one might. Given that he only experienced pain over the last few days I think we can safely assume that he didn't pull the wool over our eyes. We'll be lucky if it's not career over. Will be interesting to see who gets back first, how much longer for the second one to reform and who plays better once they're both back.Jesse isn't the only one
Back issue leaves Hawks forward facing delayed start to 2025 - https://www.afl.com.au/news/1264058
One is a second year player who’s already shown impressive senior form and whose main competition for a senior spot is Chol. The other is a first year player. So not really comparable. Will be interesting to see who gets back first, how much longer for the second one to reform and who plays better once they're both back.
McVeigh coaching forwards , that's no great rap , some can't get the footyEven if Dattoli had not got injured. Maybe it would have been premature to pencil him in for round 1 and expect him to be best 22 for most of the season. And make a immediately difference in our forward line.
Most of our draftees did not really put together a full 1st season in the seniors (with the exception of Gulden). Even if they played seniors, they tended to be in and out of the side.
Maybe there is some upside in Dattoli playing some VFL initially. Especially with McVeigh now coaching the reserves. He used to be the forwards coach and hopefully the reserves team will be a better development side than it was.
How would the recruiters have known he would do this injury in preseason training? They had no information in this. Are they gifted with ESP? This was a tragic occorence. A one off, the same as Bulker & Arnold. Just bad bloody luck. We had a similar situation with Gus last year. He never did make it back, even though he was playing good footy in the end. I think it was a mistake not to play him & Mills in the GF because we needed to win the ball at the coalface against the best mid combo in the compWe'll be lucky if it's not career over. Thanks. Sounds like there is every reason to be positive albeit that it will take time. We have the resources and he will be surrounded by good people and hopefully be learning and developing other parts of his body as he recovers. Was a bit bored, so doing a bit of research into stress reaction injuries
