I thought of the 2 Hopper was going to be the beast mid we needed but Taranto is instead. Disappointing in hoppers game as I can't recall any decent delivery or play apart the turnovers.
One game so he might need time unlike Taranto who just slotted straight in sign of a true elite player.

He did provide the goal assist to Lynch at the end...

Wasn't good let's not sugarcoat it. But no reason to write him off.

He will get better, a lot better. To me he looked nervy, a bit fumbly and indecisive. To be expected for a new club in such a big game, in a new role, etc etc etc

He's always been a classy player so that what's stood out to me the most. The unexpected skill errors. He's not comfortable yet.
Based upon last night his role is more defensive than possession based , he created a lot of space with blocks which allowed Prestia and Taranto space our midfielders generally haven’t had in the past .

It also oftens see’s the player getting the ball forward of the contest, when they get it , with opponents coming directly at them and in close proximity .

IMO when Dow has played, he has played a similar role and is undervalued .

Serviceable but not great on Thursday.

Looked at times a little frustrated. I think he just needs to get a bit of footy under his belt.

He’s an exceptional user and decision maker.

Needs match fitness and game time.

Only played 7 games last year so be patient.

2021 went at 27 touches a game and was an elite stoppage mid. Also defensively strong.

it's a long season he is being nursed Early and only Mansell and Cotchin spent less time on the Park.

Doesnt he have a heart condition which means he's always spent a fair bit of time on the bench?
Heart surgery then glandular fever. Unlucky start to his career but he was a gun for them and finished top 4 in their BNF 2019-2021. We all need to give him some time, he’ll be great for us

You could see we have to wash out some GWS instincts still. Twice we were breaking and he went for the short fast dinky kick they love at GWS to control the ball. He normally hits them but missed them on Thursday, which makes it doubly worse.

But he had some good moments with quick hands that’ll suit us too. And for me, and you can credit Taranto too here, this was the first time in probably 3-4 seasons where I didn’t feel Cripps just looming over the midfield, like he was ready to rip us apart in there with his size and strength. Cripps was still good but his presence in the contest was certainly a notch or two lower then normal.

Definitely. Remember last year players like Kennedy and whats his face from the swans looked AA calibre against us. Barely even noticed them.
Cripps is a bloody good player, will always get his touches but they didn't hurt us much this time.

He and Taranto played a vital role in the last play which saved us from a loss. Hopper went long but not too long with a perfectly weighted kick to Lynch while at the same time, Taranto ran through the defenders stopping Weitering's ability to affect the contest with a spoil. It was just perfect from the two. If the kick was longer, Carlton punch it through for a point. If it was shorter, the shot becomes more difficult. Everything about the play was perfect.

I was fishing prior to the game and suggested if Cripps tore us a new one again 14 years offered to Hopper and TT was a waste. I was taking the piss but didn’t expect them to produce as much as they did .
To win a flag midfields got bat deep , we get the forward line sorted and we may be a very sneaky chance again this year we should also be able to ‘ Manage ‘ midfielders .

If you get 70 inside 50 entries that tells me your midfield/Backline are doing their jobs

The foward line was a mess and just didnt function well , Main reason was we had no space with 18 Carlton players living there

teague needs to work this out and get it sorted
Got to give some credit to Carlton’s gameplan/ backline as well for that
They held up well and playing a spare behind the ball really helped them

It’s the same tactic we saw against us alot last year so hopefully the brains trust can work on some strategies to combat it

Balta might have to kick all our goals from 70 out over the flood

Doesn’t fit in the screenshot but both Prestia and Hopper average 4.7 clearances per game, Taranto 4.1. Taranto played more time forward at GWS so lower clearance numbers. If they can maintain or even better those averages this year it’ll bode very well for us. Taranto has started like a house on fire, give Hopper time and he’ll show us all why the club was so keen to get him as well

Thats my point

We seen what was happening and they were flooding the backline to double / triple Jack & Lynch
Would have been so easy to push jack & Tom further up the ground to 35-40 mtrs from goal and create space behind them so Dusty / Shai could do their thing.

With both our talls within 30 mtrs from goal they just clogged up the inside 50
This is on teague

The brain's trust has only had 6 months to counter it.

Early days cobwebs.
Last year were one of the highest scoring sides.
Tesgue is doing a great job.
