Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

I am slightly comforted that they'd have to persuade Reid - a mature, senior, long-term one-club player like him isn't going to Melbourne if he doesn't want to. But if they offer him more money/longer contract and given he's originally from Melbourne (not sure how embedded in Sydney he is these days) they might have a chance. Also, I guess if we did lose him, I could live with that - it wouldn't be a disaster. I have after all spent most of the past 6 months thinking we shouldn't recontract him for the coming season. And it appears clear that if we had brought in a 'big name' forward we wouldn't be committing to re-rookieing him.
From memory, Sam is married to a Sydney girl, has kid/s and built a home somewhere around Berowra, so he's pretty settled up here I think.
Having said that, if we are offering him a year at say $150k and Melbourne are offering 2 at say $250k, it could be worth it.
I'm an unabashed Sam fan and think a fit and firing Sammy is a huge asset, but I think the club would have thought through all scenarios and would be willing to take the chance.

Might work for him if he has a property in Melbourne to move into.

Immediately negatively gear Berowra.

he would only move for $500k imo. If he doesn’t own Melbourne property he would have to spend $70k plus pa in rental. Some of which hed also get back from the ATO.

I hope you're wrong. I would be very disappointed if we broke a promise. If someone else grabs him, so be it. Not sure that would make him all that happy.

Depends on the money and the contract length. If he passes medicals Norf, Hawf and the Donnie’s could be interested. All need KPFs

He's not long bought/built a new house, has a young family. He's well settled in Sydney. Being picked up by WCE for instance would be a total disaster family and financially wise. Victoria would be better but I doubt very much he would welcome it at all.

hmmn.., would clearly prefer staying at Sydney on good coin and security. But has only been offered a possible Cat A.

If he has a mortgage he will need to consider.

Cat A doesn't determine his money, only the discount the club gets.

True. More if he gets a choice of a one year with us or two elsewhere.

Obviously I would not support paying him very much at all.

Worst case we get another injury year like 2023. Sadly Sam is fit and kicking bags for Melbourne against us. We're left to play Ladhams as a forward/ backup ruck. He kicks 3 behinds, drops a sitter in the goal square, gets creamed in the ruck by Reid and in frustration the red mist descends so he thumps Grundy, causing him to be concussed before downing an umpire behind play.

Highly likely too!!:(

Fantastic news very happy for him to get another chance.

And personally very very happy that it probably upset a couple of haters on here. What a great day.
We missed him last year - his experience is needed up forward. Just need him to stay fit in his final year for us.

Takes him a while to get going but the big IF his body holds up we are better for it. If for nothing more than such a good high reaching set of strong hands.

Even his detractors surely at times see his value. Seems like a great free hit and as you say value as a veteran to others.
