Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

He would be a terrible defender and would not be able to be accountable for his opponent. It was tried in reserves and he couldn't do it. He would be ok as a loose interceptor like Aliir was, but then everyone else in the backline would have to cover for him. It won't happen.
How frequently was he tried in defence in the two's. We need depth in the backline. Maybe a full season there in the two's would help

I reckon a permanent move to defence could give him a 3rd wind. He has the height and athleticism to be able to spoil the monster FF's. It's clear that there is no space in the forward line. He has all the attributes to be a good defender and he is actually not a bad field kick.. just can't kick goals lol. The 2 big questions, how does go in 1-1 contests as a defender and can his body hold up. I wouldn't be against a 1 year contract on a much reduced salary. Bring in P McCartin too and we have some more depth at that 195cm range

Delist and possibly rookie on the most minimal of chips.

Paddy MacWack has to be the priority. Greater body strength and footy IQ.

For me Sam's future is a litmus test on how the Club intends to move fwd or just subside again.

Well I for one am clearly in the minority but I would play him ahead of melican in the backline and ahead of McLean - who i like but is vastly less mobile.
I would play him ahead of McCartin. He would immediately become our second best defender. Dunno what everyone's on about, lost the plot thinking he will be delisted. Horse absolutely loves him.

He also had a ripping start to the season and had the best game of his career against Essendon. He was colossal that game. Seems to have been forgotten just because he came back from injury at the back end clearly a bit underdone. He still has a couple of years in him.

His constant injuries shit me to tears but with our defence the way it is, he stays and should get shoved in there anytime he's fit.

Swing that swingman to defence permanently on a reduced contract. Our KPD depth is woeful. He's a good contested mark and god knows he's been thrown into the backline to stop the bleeding plenty of times.

I thought Harley's interview on SEN this morning was pretty ominous for Sam. Used the phrase 'haven't made a final decision yet'.

If we do release him, I think it has been a mistake to not try him for one season as a full time defender.

Standing toe to toe he will get touched up , struggles physically
Again I disagree. As a forward you're trying to mark the ball or at least try and contest the mark and bring it to ground. As a defender he's got the height and reach to be an effective spoiler in a contested situation. He's also a pretty good contested mark and he's saved our bacon at times when moved down back.

He's at the end of his career and he's not going to suddenly have some renaissance and he is very injury prone but we're not flush with KPD options right now. I don't know why you wouldn't keep him as insurance if the price was right.

That's been the story of his career though, hits good form, then gets injured, comes back and is not the same player he was pre-injury. He's never hit top line form for more than half a season, followed by extended periods on the sideline, then carrying him on field as a passenger until he 'comes right'. Which generally happens over the pre-season, only for him to get injured shortly thereafter - rinse and repeat.

He's done imo - at his age, injuries aren't going to become any less of a feature of his career - a 10 game stretch of good form probably 3 times in his career - followed by very little else.

Disagree. Contesting in the air is the one thing he's good at. Below the knees might be another story.
In fact Sam is one of our best pressure forwards. His work in close is pretty decent. Body on body on the lead is weaker when you talk people like Hawkins.
Melican just takes longer to get moving.
All the others are too small, which highlights how brilliant Rampe has been, given he is even smaller.
If it was a reasonable chance Horse at al would have looked at it. We'll see.
