Pick 39 - Nathan O'Keefe - KP Forward (third tall) - 192cm, 82kg - Eastern Ranges, Vic

Tallish Key Forward who joined the Ranges list mid way through the season (Not sure why he didn't at the start). Played mainly as CHF in the couple of games I saw and has a strong pair of hands and was very good kick for goal. Out-marked and Out-played Hurley in round 19 and than was very dangerous in the final I saw him in against the Bushies. Bit of a risk I just think he has plenty of upside and could be a really good quality forward for the cats who will give him plenty of time to develop.
Interesting selection, Blood. Why did you go for him over Cornelius?

Enjoyed your selections so far mate, looks like you've done your research.

What number is the extra pick Hawthorn will take now that Crawf has retired?

Crawf is/was an outside veteran. Thus he would be replaced through the rookie draft unless Hawthorn decide to promote someone to the veterans list to replace him.

If Hawthorn DO find a new veteran, then the Hawks would be looking at selection #78 by my maths.

Ahh I see... cheers! Do the Hawks have anyone else who qualifies for veteran listing?

I dont really rate Cornelius TBH I have watched a couple of his VFL games and little bit of his Champs and I just didn't see anything at all. With O'Keefe I see more improvment in his game at the next level he moves well for a tall and has strong hands as he showed against Hurley in the game I mentioned.

okay there are plenty of folk about now who i've considered to be best available but after getting LJ with pick 13 i think i'll start trying to address needs..

Pick 47 - Jamie Sheehan (Murray)

Seriously considered Kade Klemke with this pick but went with Sheehan because i just love the way he goes about it. Although he is young he will set a good example to blokes like Dal Santo about how to go about it.. Sheehan is just like that jack russell that was on the pitch in the I.R over in Ireland:p just chases and chases the ball around all day, He is reasonably quick and is just a great footballer (perhaps a more talented Clinton Jones?) anyway, i think he'll slot nicely into our midfield/half forward

Pick 48 - Jordan Jones (Geelong)

Obvious choice here, St.Kilda needs some young defenders and Jones fits the bill.. as he develops it'll allow Sam Fisher to run off even more (scary isn't it:p) but yeah, Jones always seems to make every contest and is great in the air. Hopefully a little bit more growth height wise in him and he'll bulk up nicely. Was too good to pass on.

Pick 49 - Geelong - Taylor Hunt (Sandringham Dragons)

A really quick midfieder who loves to run and carry the ball. Watched him a couple of times for VM and noticed that he quite gets the ball and takes off breaking lines. His delevery can be little off at times but makes up for it with the speed and carry he generates. Together with Smith the will charge off the half-back line and give Geelong the little bit of speed they require.

Back to you Quigley, one of the main reasons I took Brown over Cornelius was I see Brown turning into a KPP at AFL level, whereas Cornelius will only ever be a 3rd tall IMO. As I have said, now that we have got Hurley and Brown, combined with the other talls on our list, it really shores up our spine for some time to come.

Fair enough I have always rated Cornelius as a key position and thought he might end up like Bradshaw. Admittedly he would require a lot of time in the gym. I just think he has that goal scoring instinct and the hands make him a dangerous prospect.

Interesting on the countdown on the AFL website he said he saw himself as a third tall and I think likened his game to that of O'Keefe. That would steer him away from the key position category.

Pick 50 - Rory Sloan - Vic Metro - Eastern Rangers - 182cm 78kg

Really liked Sloan here and amzed he has slid to 50  . This probably now shows me i should have taken the 188cm Broadbent (Utility) with my last pick and grabbed Sloan here. Its funny how clubs taking certain players can affect the way u draft. Cant belive so many quality mids would still be available at 50. Ill do a better write up later, busy busy busy.

HAWKS
16 - Phil Davis
34 - Luke Shuey
50 - Rory Sloan

Im getting very worried as well, im starting to agree with everything that Quigley says. Im a huge fan of the Bartman McCulloch :thumbsu:

Who's up now... Melbourne... cool 1 more pick til 52 for WCE... interested to see who Gilly takes - was very surprised he didnt take Jetta at 36 seeings he was still there and our known need for a crumbing forward, after the two mids he took... are there any decent small forwards left?

Quite simply I rate Zaharakis higher than Jetta......he had a more consistent champs and a very good year captaining the Knights. I think Zacca has more tools to work with to become an AFL midfielder and he has also troubled the scorer's sheet more this year, so I don't see any reason he couldn't start off his career on a HFF....although ultimately his pace and accurate kicking (vastly improved form last year) would see him ideally suited to a wing on Subiaco. With his reaction time, pace and agility he is capable of moving into the middle and winning clearances too.

Not that I'm aware of.

With Crawford gone their oldest players are Dew (born 1979) and Croad (born 1980). Dew doesn't meet the 10 year service rule, while Croad is definitely too young.

My understanding is that they have listed Cameron Stokes as a "nominated rookie" for 2009, the retirement of Crawford may allow them to have a second "nominated rookie". They won't be the only team without any veterans in 2009.

Dam Do Boer is gone - Hoping he would last to the Pies Picks:(
Dam Do Boer is a real guy.

He immigrated from Vietnam as a kid. :p:eek::rolleyes:
After careful consideration, and there were quite a few players looked at here, I have decided to go tall again, to really bolster our forward line. Therefore:

Selection: 40 Mitch Brown

I'll do a write up a little later on.
Your premiership window is closing. ;) :)

I find that every year "I'll do a write up a bit later" is really code for "There is no way I am going to get around to doing a write up." :p

I know that I'm currently sitting on a surplus write up on Sam Wright, plus I've been meaning to jot down a couple of thoughts on Ayce Cordy since sportz1 didn't. He's been a hard man to find (well, both Cordy and sportz have been). ;)

Selection 52 - West Coast - Michael Still - Northern Knights, 194cm, 83kgs

I love my Knights boys .

While the need for a small crumbing forward is identified, there is likely to be some candidates available in the rookie draft.

Still is a bottom aged FF who averaged 2.3 goals a game for the Knights this year. Reads the play and times his leads from the square well. Not overly quick but quick enough, uses his body well and has a strong pair off hands out in front of his face which makes him difficult to spoil. Reacts well when the ball hits the ground and evidence of second efforts. Will do the 1%'ers instinctively and is prepared to chase and apply defensive pressure, although a slight query about him being run off and exploited by quicker and more agile defenders at AFL level.

Set shot kicking can be a bit hit and miss and would like to get him a running coach and squeeze a bit more speed out of him. WC fans will probably disagree on a needs basis, but having missed out on Shoenmakers at #20 I think he's worth a punt at #52.

Kade Klemke came into strong consideration too, but I think you got a better version in Selwood last year.

ysaye, im happy with your picks so far, but i really think we should have snared a key position player in the second round.

i think lisle really suits our needs as our key back stocks are fairly poor at the moment. mcpharlin is the only player id back to win the majority of contests i our backline. grover and dodd get outmanned and mundy, ibbo, hayden and johnson are too unaccountable. we need quality man-on-man backmen. drum isnt meritting his early pick-up at this point in time. that said, i think we're just as desparate for a kpf. after pav, i dont think campbell or murphy have the tools to hold down our forward line.

i hope you target some key position players later in the draft because really, in four years our current stocks arent shaping up to be anything overly special. but great effort so far. walters, rich and robinson will make our midfield a force to reckon with in four or five years.

Yeh Ysaye isn't it about time you started taking key positions (ie I am going small again and I need you not to steal my guy). I hear Sibosado is the second coming of buddy I am sure he would great for you guys (btw I actually don't mind Sibosado).

BTW Vic Crow my write up on Cordy if that helps any:

Ayce Cordy (DOB 6/8/90, Ht – 202, Wt – 77)

Very tall stick insect who once he puts some weight on should be first class ruck option for the Bulldogs. He was the tallest of the attendees at draft camp this year measuring in at 201.7 and when you combine that with a pretty good jump you have a guy who is going to get fairly high up in the air. His ruck skills are okay but at the moment he is nowhere near strong enough to hold his position against AFL rucks. In most years we would be raving about his athleticism but Natanui puts him in the shade so not much has been said about it. I think he compares very favourably with most of the first rucks running around and he is certainly not going to be disadvantaged in that regard. As mentioned he has a good jump on him and when that is combined with his good hands he is a serious marking threat. He moves around the ground very well and accumulates possessions nicely. His disposal skills are okay but could use some work. Cordy put in one of the real stand out performances of the draft camp for me in the agility test. This extremely tall guy who is still growing into his body pulled out the 5th best agility time with an 8.27. He presents a pretty big target so I am not thinking of that in terms of his work in traffic but more for turning circle and changing direction when he rests up forward and down back. It was reported on here that he did a 3.05 in the 20m sprint which is pretty good for a big guy and adds to the allure. Injury issues kept him out for most of the year and with him playing school football last year there is some question marks about his matching up with better quality opposition but really he has a lot of tools that make him an attractive prospect.

I disagree on a needs basis.

Tall forwards we have and I would've rather a speculative mid, an agile, small forward or an agile, small defender.

Having said that however, if Still is a lot better than anything else on offer, we'd have to pick him.

Good job overall, I think Gilly.

Quigs, I have Cordy down for 3.05 over 20m and a very quick 5m time of 1.04. Interesting that the rucks were the quickest group at 2008 draft camp ... although a few of them didn't test like McCulloch, Stanley and Redden.

I would have looked at Hunt and Sloane but they were gone. Klemke as I said is probably too similar to Selwood.

You have some tall forwards on your list, but I think most are best suited across CHF, whereas I like Still leading out form the square.
