2008 phantom draft

I Decided to give it a go. Give me some feedback. Got abit lazy at the end as it gets extremely hard!
Round 1:
Pick 1: Melbourne: Jack Watts: Good young forward exactly what Melb needs.
Pick 2: West Coast: Nicholas Natanui: West Coast need someone to help out Dean Cox, definetely not satisified with Seaby(Plays better up forward anyway)
Pick 3: Fremantle: Daniel Rich: The next best available. Watched him play in the championships, the kid will be a gun, already made for senior football. Another gun into the midfield to help Rhys Palmer.
Pick 4: Port Adelaide: Hamish Hartlett: Looking around the forum, many are beginning to say that Vickery will go at #4. Having a look at Port.Adelaide's list, they do not need another ruckman. They have Brogan and Lade as there number one ruckman and then the youngsters in DeLuca and Lobbe. No need for a ruckman here. They will go for the next best midfielder and that is Hartlett.
Pick 5: Essendon: Michael Hurley: With Mal Michael retiring, Fletcher at 32 years of age and Patty Ryer beginning to play more up forward, Essendon need a key backman and here is their man. He is a big boy for his age and will slip in nicely down at bomber land at FB/CHB.
Pick 6: Carlton: Jack Ziebell: Although their Midfield is pack full of superstars, they are going to have to go for the next best available and it will be Ziebell.
Pick 7: Brisbane Lions: Tyrone Vickery: Pencil this one in. I believe Brisbane need a ruckmen the most out of any club. They have Leuenberger and Beau McDonald(not sure where he has been all year) then it has been Mitch Clark who has had to bob up and do some ruckwork. A ruckman is definetely what they need now that Jonathan Brown is staying at the Lions.
Pick 8: Richmond: Shaun McKernan: Can play as a tall forward/tall defender and also fill in the ruck roles. This will be a tough choice for Richmond as they seem fairly balanced around the ground. I think they will go for the next best available who has a body to jump straight into senior footy.
Pick 9: Collingwood: Steele Sidebottom: Next best midfielder who goes in and under. Will need to replace the ageing Burns and O'Bree.
Pick 10: North Melbourne: Mitch Robinson: After drafting youngster Robbie Tarrant last year and a very big forward line with the likes of Edwards, Thompson, Tarrant and Hale they wont go for a tall or KPP. This kid can jump straight into the Roos' on-ball department.
Pick 11: Sydney: Nick Suban: Do need a ruckman but i think they will leave that for their next pick. Suban is the next best midfielder who will replace the swans ageing midfielders in Bolton, Crouch, Fosdike, Kirk and Matthews.
Pick 12: Adelaide: Lewis Johnstone: Many say he should have gone before pick 12 but because of different needs from other clubs he will fall to number 12. Adelaide need key forwards and key backman and Johnstone showed at the championships that he can fill these roles.
Pick 13: St.Kilda: Sam Blease: Need a classy midfielder to replace the retirement of Harvey. The kid can run and carry and break the lines. Exactly what the saints need.
Pick 14: Western Bulldogs: Ayce Cordy: Would rather no one make a bid for Cordy but the likes of Sydney and St.Kilda probably will, so the dogs will have to take Cordy here to help out Minson and Hudson.
Pick 15: Hawthorn: Christopher Yarran: The Hawks have a super forward line and too many young tall backman to grab another KPP here. They will go for the next best midfielder who can go forward and kick goals alongside Rioli.
Pick 16: Geelong: Jackson Trengrove: Will take the next best KPP i think. There midfield is too brilliant to add anymore midfielders so Trengrove will go at #16.
PRIORITY PICKS:
Pick 17: Melbourne: Thomas Swift: I think he is the next best midfielder and Melbourne need in and under midfielders who can break the lines.
Pick 18: West Coast: Shephen Hill: A Classy midfielder who will add plenty of pace to the eagles midfield. Definetely will need a midfielder considering Kerr might be packing his bags.
Round 2:
Pick 19: Melbourne: Aaron Cornelius: Surely won't pass on Cornelius if he is available at this point in the draft. Another KPP who can play up forward for the demons alongside Jack Watts.
Pick 20: West Coast: Tom Rockliff: They have picked a ruckman and now will continue to seek for the small forwards/midfielders. Rockliff is a genuine goal sneak who is a very good mark for his size, the eagles will hope that he can develop into a midfielder also.
Pick 21: Fremantle: Jordan Lisle: Fremantle need a KPP to play down back and also up forward to help out Pavlich. Lisle is the next best KPP in the draft at this stage.
Pick 22: Port Adelaide: Matthew Deboer: Port will continue to stock its midfielder structure and will pick the next best midfielder in DeBoer. Hard as nails this kid who gets alot of the ball. Exactly what Port needs.
Pick 23: Essendon: Nick Heyne: They have already picked a KPP and are now set to develop their midfield. Nick Heyne is the next best midfielder who is a Utility with a deadly left foot. Can also go forward and kick goals.
Pick 24: Carlton: Rhys O'Keefe: Midfield is full so they will start considering giving their back half a make-over and will select O'Keefe who runs off Half Back very well.
Pick 25: Brisbane Lions: David Zaharakis: Have selected their ruckman and NOW will begin searching for midfielders. This kid had a good championship who has kicked plenty of goals for the Northen Knights as well as dominating the midfield.
Pick 26: Richmond: Tom Lynch: As i said previously, seem fairly balanced around the ground and arent that desperate for key positions so will go for the next best available and that will be the Utility Tom Lynch.
Pick 27: Collingwood: Jamie Sheehan: Will start as a small forward but will be able to jump into the midfield in years to come to fill the shoes of Burns, O'Bree etc.
Pick 28: North Melbourne: Paul Cahill: Wont jump straight into senior football but will develop to be a handy forward/defender in years to come. Massive vertical leap. Very athletic.
Pick 29: Sydney: Jordan Roughead: Have got their man! Picked the next best midfielder early with their first pick and now have a good ruckman who will take over Spider Everitt and help out Jolly alongside Currie.
Pick 30: Adelaide: Ryan Shoenmakers: Picked a KP forward with their first pick and now have a talanted midfielder with a great left foot who showed great poise throughout the Championships. Can play a variety of positions.
Pick 31: St.Kilda: Clancee Pearce: Small Utility player who mainly played off half back at the Championships and ran well. Loves a hard contest and will look good alongside Luke Ball.
Pick 32: Western Bulldogs: Matthew Broadbent: Many say they need a good KP forward. I believe now with Cordy in the side as well as Jarrad Grant who will play next year should give the Bulldogs forward line enough bulk and size, so they will pick a Utility who can play off half-back and in the midfield. A classy mover who can break the lines.
Pick 33: Hawthorn: Mitchell Banner: Will continue to develop their midfielde structure. Racked up disposals in the championships who can also go forward.
Pick 34: Geelong: Michael Walters: Pretty simple, will go for the next best available. Small pocket player who is clever by foot and can win his own ball.
Round 3:
Pick 35: Melbourne: Tom Salter: Have selected two KPP and one midfielder and will continue to develop its midfield and will pick the Tasmanian captain, Salter. Wins alot of the ball and uses it very well.
Pick 36: West Coast: Neville Jetta: Have an exciting ruckman, a classy midfielder and will now grab a small forward. A very exciting prospect who is explosive off the mark and is a good small crumbing forward.
Pick 37: Fremantle: Luke Shuey: With the best midfielder being selected and a good KPP, the dockers will select the next best midfielder considering that Josh Carr wants out. Vic Metros Best and Fairest so obviously can play.
Pick 38: Port Adelaide: Jay Shannon: Will continue to pick midfielders. This kid is all class who reads the game really well and has good work ethic.
Pick 39: Essendon: Zachary Clarke: Need a ruckman only on the basis of rumous that Laycock might not be a bomber next year or might be trade bait. Will take time to develop this kid who is very mobile but could be a very good tap ruckman when developed.
Pick 40: Carlton: Luke Stanton: Tall athletic wingman who is very creative when the ball is in his hands. Big tank who can run all day. Would fit in nicely in the navy blue jumper.
Pick 41: Brisbane Lions: Tom Alwright: Another midfielder who has played senior footy in the VFL for Tasmania. Clean hands and a good mark.
Pick 42: Richmond: Riley Milne: A skinny defender although will be a project player for the Tigers with a hard attack on the footy. Key defender for the future.
Pick 43: Collingwood: Andrew Browne: Absolute giant. Played TAC Cup this year as a 19 year old and will be a good option for Collingwood as a ruckman for the future.
Pick 44: North Melbourne: Taylor Hunt: Can play half back and can switch into the midfield. Had a reasonably good Championship and is quite good by foot.
Pick 45: Sydney: Mitchell Brown: A big boy from the Sandringham Dragons. Good hands and very good out on the lead. Will take Full-forward when Barry Hall moves on.
Pick 46: Adelaide: Kade Klemke: Reads the play really well and has good footy smarts. Will be a real steal here.
Pick 47: St.Kilda: Daniel Hannebery: Can play down back and also go into the midfield with good pace and great foot skills he will be a good pick up for the saints.
Pick 48: Western Bulldogs: Ben Speight: Nice skills and class for a young small forward.
Pick 49: Hawthorn: Taylor Gilchrist: A very handy utility, doesn’t have a set place on the field but will probably be able to develop either forward or back while playing in the vfl.

Pick 50: Geelong: Steven Gaertner: Didnt get picked up last year when many say he should have. Tall athletic defender with huge potential and will finally get drafted.

Why would melbourne pick up midfielders who are inside players we already are overcrowded with these- Brock Mclean, Nathan Jones, James Macdonald, Brent Moloney, Shane Valenti, Jack Grimes we dont need any more inside mids, yes we do need outside mids with pace but not inside. Other than that Watts and Cornelius are good picks although im not sure about Aaron, would rather us gamble on Mitch Brown later in the draft or another KPF.

What you think????

Will Mitch Banner go to collingwood that low thought he would be higher than that?

Pick 7: Brisbane Lions: Tyrone Vickery: Pencil this one in. I believe Brisbane need a ruckmen the most out of any club. A ruckman is definetely what they need now that Jonathan Brown is staying at the Lions
We have Charmo and Leuenberger + Clark,Tippet etc and won't pick a ruckman.
Lions will be looking at the best midfielder available at our first pick and probably second as well. So either Hartlett or Ziebell or if they are gone possibly Blease or Sidebottom for our first pick.

I think he'll go a bit lower than that actually.

I think you'll see him go in the second round, not later than early third IMO. Even though his size is probably a draw back for some clubs, his ability to find the ball and work rate is second to none. Had a very very impressive carnival and his form hasn't dropped off at all. Very good around goals and absolutely doesn't stop running. 45 touches (32 kicks) with 20 handball receives and 9 marks on the weekend for the Jets. If his disposal by foot was more consistent and had a few more cm on him he would be taken late in the first round IMO.

I'll wait until the final order has been determined.

Yep same here. Not much point right now, still don't know the positions of 6 teams. Had a few rough goes before but things just kept changing. I've got names and their rough draft positions but will wait at least until after Grand Final day before starting to put something together.

4. port - hartlett everyone reckons they need ruckmen but they dont and hartlett is a gun mid from sa perfect mid

They will go for the next best midfielder and that is Hartlett.

god no.

the last thing we need is a skinny barstard who is too small and weak to lay a tackle.

and we desperately desperately need a ruckman, which is where Vickery fits the bill (he also has Brendon Lade written all over him).

Ports ruck depth: Brogan (probably only has 3 years left in him), Lade (will probably retire after next season), Deluca/Giles will probably be delisted.

Lobbe is not a ruckman.

I don't question his effort and work-rate, not at all. So not surprised to see him racking up the disposals in the TAC Cup. He's a hard-at-it, thumping kick small midfielder but not only is he small, he isn't one of the quickest blokes either to go with his height. When them two go against a player a tad in this day and age ; Height & Pace ; than in my opinion he hasn't got a a massive scope for improvement, and I think recruiter's now go with potential superstars with a heap of scope for improvement. Palmer was superior to Myers the year he got drafted, but Myers was drafted earlier. That's because he had more scope for improvement.

True, definitely not two things you'd like to have, lack of height and pace. I just don't see him falling any further than early 3rd TBH, i guess we can't agree on everything can we mate? :p;)

Anyway to you, how does he compare to someone fairly similar to him in Jaime Sheahan with regards to draft position? Both between middle third and late second? Who would you take first? I personally can't split them because while Sheahan is somewhat quicker, hes disposal isn't as good as Banner's. Other than that they seem to have fairly similar traits, especially the hair. ;)

Nup, can't agree on everything. :p

Umm, difficult question, I'd probably take Sheahan first. Has got a bit of zip around the ground and can be more than handy up forward. IIRC the last Champ's game he played in, he kicked 3 goals.

Pick 7: Brisbane Lions: Tyrone Vickery: Pencil this one in. I believe Brisbane need a ruckmen the most out of any club. Penicl this one in?

Jamie Charman ring a bell? McDonald has retired. Plus Brisbane really rate young Tippett as well and he will be promoted to the senior list.

If we pick a ruckman with pick 7 there will be a riot. We have gone tall early in the last few drafts - it's now time to focus on the midfield.

Pick 24: Carlton: Rhys O'Keefe: Midfield is full so they will start considering giving their back half a make-over and will select O'Keefe who runs off Half Back very well.
Would love to get him, but I'll take this guy please. :D
Pick 30: Adelaide: Ryan Shoenmakers: Picked a KP forward with their first pick and now have a talanted midfielder with a great left foot who showed great poise throughout the Championships. Can play a variety of positions.
Shoenmakers has a top name, but I like his highlights as well.
Pick 40: Carlton: Luke Stanton: Tall athletic wingman who is very creative when the ball is in his hands. Big tank who can run all day. Would fit in nicely in the navy blue jumper.
I was reminded of Jordan Russell watching Stanton's highlights.

Carlton, like most clubs needs footballers who are very good kicks, not another rangy flanker and potential project.

Another partner in crime for Betts would be perfect.

This kid has me intrigued though.
Pick 45: Sydney: Mitchell Brown: A big boy from the Sandringham Dragons. Good hands and very good out on the lead. Will take Full-forward when Barry Hall moves on.
Carlton need a CHF and CHB not midfielders
You're contradicting yourself and your criticisms of Hughes if you want us to overlook the best available at six.

We have a CHB who is only 19 years of age, but we desperately need another clearance player or midfielder with legspeed and skill if we can find one.

A player similar to Boak or Deledio would be great.
