Yes but nowhere near Buddy's level. You can't deny those picks were shocking mistakes.
No, they weren’t. Griffen at his peak was one of the better midfielders in the league and their captain. Roughead was a calculated risk that Hawthorn took because they knew that if they took Buddy first then Roughy would have gone to the Tigers. Tambling was a shocking mistake, those two were perfectly good selections.

How can you say picking Griffen and Roughead ahead of Franklin is not a shocking mistake. They bypassed one of the greatest of all time. Buddy would be in the top 5 players of all time, Roughead would be ranked about 130 and Griffen 460.
Please, some perspective. If you think Old Ruff Ruff is anywhere near Buddy's standard, you are sadly mistaken. We saw how ineffective and slow Old Roughy was in a bad team, it was a lot easier for him when he took the 2rd defender and Buddy took the main defender.

Is your reading comprehension really that bad or do you just not understand the logic behind Hawthorn selecting Roughead before Buddy?
The only one who needs perspective here is you. The draft is a lottery for the most part and clubs make selections based on limited knowledge. More often than not a player will be selected that turns out to be not as good as one selected later, but if that player goes on to play 200 games and captain your club still it can hardly be classified as a ‘shocking mistake’. Get a grip.

So you're saying picking Roughead before Franklin is not a shocking mistake?

Given the reasoning and circumstances behind it, absolutely not. I’d go as far as saying it was bloody genius.

So Cotchin was a shocking mistake as the Tigers missed Dangerfield?
Not at all, they are comparable, Cotchin is a duel premiership captain and Brownlow medalist, Dangerfield is very good but kicks only 10% of goals when bursting out of the center-not a good stat. The Geelong players themselves didn't have him in the top 3 nominations for Geelong in the player of the year and they would know.
Franklin is miles ahead of everyone in that draft and that includes good 'ol honest Roughy who got dropped this year then delisted.

I'm not sure about Gawn in front of Martin. The real question is how did Melbourne rate Scully and Trengove over Martin? And Watts over Natanui? Two of the biggest draft blunders of all time.
4 picks in the top 20 and none of them would play 100 games for us. Trengove unlucky with injuries, Scully a mercenary and the other two were just not good enough

Thank **** we got lucky with Gawn to save this draft

Time for Salem ,Petracca and Viney to step up as well.

No one is denying that mate. Griffen had a career worth of a pick 3 and same goes for Roughy. Draft is a lottery for the most part, no one knew Buddy would become a generational talent, same as no one knew Tom Boyd or Jack Watts would be a bust. Griffen is in no way a 'shocking mistake' as we got good return on that pick.

And by the way, the careers of Dangerfield and Cotchin are not comparable. But not in the way you think.

It's possible that had Hawthorn picked Franklin at 2, Richmond and Footscray may have picked Roughead at 3 or 4. By taking Roughead at 2, the Hawks also got Franklin at 5. Great move by the Hawks.

Wow - 1 time All Australian Cotchin is comparable with 7 time All Australian Dangerfield. I read some bias posts before but this is right up there.

It was a mistake from Hawthorn to risk Buddy getting picked. They wouldn't have done it if they knew how Buddy was, they just got lucky.

Dangerfield is obviously the better player ,my point is that there is a bigger difference between Roughy and Franklin than Danger and Cotchin.

AA is a lottery and a farce. Have a look at the clowns who select it: to a man they are people we ridicule for their bias and lack of insight.Luke Darcy, Cameron Ling. Biased morons. Zach Merrett was picked ahead of Cotchin in 2017, that's all you need to know. In 2013, Richmond won 15 games, missing top-4 by half a game, and didn't have a single player in the AA 40-man squad. It's a joke. Perennial favourites and flavours of the month.

Cotchin v Danger is like choosing between Hodge and Judd, if Hodge could play on-ball and Judd couldn't get his team into a grand final. Cotchin is a two-time premiership captain credited by all in the know for the massive cultural shift that led us out of nearly four decades in the wilderness. Danger is more dominant as an individual, but I wouldn't swap him for Cotch in a million years.

All that said, Socrates is fighting a dumb battle. Roughy and Griff over Buddy was nowhere near the mistake Tambling was. And seriously, who cares? Buddy had issues that Richmond of 2004 was ill-equipped to cope with. And if we'd got him, we might have finished even one spot higher in 2007 and 2009, which means we don't get Cotchin and Martin and we don't win two of the past three flags. I'm not saying we were right to overlook Buddy, but it did work out for us in the long run.

Zach Merrett was picked ahead of Cotchin in 2017, that's all you need to know.
The same Zach Merrett the AFL coaches deemed the fourth-best player in the league in 2017, with Cotchin not making the top ten? The same Zach Merrett the Umpires ranked 11th in the 2017 Brownlow while Cotchin roared to a cheeky 46th? Biased morons, the lot of them.

The same Zach Merrett who never got tagged v the same Trent Cotchin tagged every week, even ahead of Dusty. The same Zach Merrett who disappeared once teams put work into him.

You do realise your coach gives half the votes for every game you play in, yes? Merrett competing with a bunch of VFL players and Cotchin with a plethora of premiership stars.

And yes, umpires are morons. All they do is look at the stat sheet these days.

But na, you're right. Zach Merrett is a better player than Cotchin. Hurley is better than Rance. Essendon is better than Richmond. Congrats.

Hilarious melt. Where did Richmond finish in 2017
