I did say unlucky to miss were the Crows. But what team would the Crows 6 best midfielders push out? They are IMO the #7 team, with Lions being #8. Obviously you feel differently which is fine...what's your rating?

IMO next year Thompson, Danger, Vince, Porplyzia, Van Berlo and Knights will challenge the best of midfields

Carlton are rated very highly however our midfield smashed Carlton twice this year

1. West Coast
2. Adelaide
3. Geelong
4. Sydney
5. Port
6. Brisbane
7. St Kilda
8. Richmond
9. Western Bulldogs
10. Melbourne
11. Fremantle
12. Carlton
13. Hawthorn
14. Collingwood
15. North Melbourne
16. Essendon

Do you ever watch any of the non Victorian clubs

I think you should throw Adelaide's midfield in that mic

Adel - Thompson, Vince, Dangerfield, MacKay, Van Berlo, Knights, Porplyzia, Otten (next year), Goodwin, McLeod, Doughty and Edwards
dont know much about the non-vic teams cos they dont really interest me.. but isnt porplyzia a forward ? and doesnt mcleod usually play in the half back line ? where does knights play usually?

Judd(Top ten Brownlow) 26
Murphy(Top ten Brownlow) 22
Gibbs(Top ten Brownlow) 20 years
Kruezer/Warnock/Hampson 20/22/21
Hadley 26
Mclean 23
Simpson 25
Carrazo 26
Walker 23
Grigg 21
Joseph 20

Average age 22

Probably 4/5th at the moment but def on the way up

So I would say

Geel
St Kilda
Dogs
Haw/Carl
Adelaide
Coll

Judd(Top ten Brownlow) 26
Murphy(Top ten Brownlow) 22
Gibbs(Top ten Brownlow) 20 years

Hadley 26 Terrible
Mclean 23 Solid
Simpson 25 Solid
Carrazo 26 Terrible
Walker 23 Average
Grigg 21 Still too raw
Joseph 20 Still too raw

Average age 22

For all the hoopla about Carlton's midfield they have a fair few average players in their rotation. If it wasn't for Judd it would be quite average...but alas their first three players are terrific (Judd, Murphy, Gibbs)

1. Cats
2. Hawks
3. Saints
4. Dogs
5. Pies
6. Blues / Crows

Actually when you consider ruckmen as well, Hawks probably fall a spot or two. But for actual midfielders, they're comfortably top 3 with Burgoyne now in there.

I agree Carlton needs more midfield depth, but you need to remember that it's not a question of how good the individuals are, but how well they complement each other. Players like Hadley & Mclean are important as they get the hard ball, releasing other plays to be on the receiving end. Walker has barely played over the past 2 years so we'll see how he goes.

1. Geelong
2. Dogs
3. St Kilda
4. Hawthorn
5. Carlton
6. Adelaide
7. Collingwood

if I had to split them. You could very reasonably argue Carlton should be lower also, and even though the whole downhill skier thing was overdone, we do lack defensive pressure a lot of the time.

Hawks & Dogs a bit underrated I think.

aye in 2009 it was cats and saints, with e dogs closing in fast.

the class difference between the top 3 at the end of the season was significant.

Dogs comfortably 3rd ahead of Collingwood and a solid argument that they could have beaten st kilda with some luck and a forward.

Collingwood were, when it counted, smashed in the middle by the saints and cats, as were adelaide.

hawks can argue injuries.

2010 I don't think will have any one team stand ahead of the pack let alone two as St Kilda and Geelong did in 09.

Whilst I agree our midfield is behind the other 3 members of the top 4, we will have two enormous additions in 2010 from that which got smashed in the finals: Pendlebury and Jolly. Pendlebury is our clearance specialist, and Jolly is a top 3 ruckman, our midfield output will increase tenfold.

As I said 2009 had 2 standout teams and one closing rapidly.

2010 will be a lot lot closer.

earlier i said in the thread several teams had their form tactics driven, Geelong's stands alone IMO.

Collingwood and Adelaide closed rapidly by building on Lyon's pressure in the midfield, which itself was an expansion on Sydney's mid decade strategy.

in 2010 st kilda won't surprise teams as it did in 2009. Some teams will build on Saints strategy, others will look at how Carlton, Essendon and Geelong played it, which was with greater speed through the lines not allowing st kilda to regroup.

Also i would suggest at the start of the season st Kilda had a marginal edge in fitness, which closed up rapidly by mid season.

lastly st kilda had a mighty run of luck with injuries (in so far as we had very few), Lenny Hayes as in 2006, would be a massive blow to our aspirations.

which is why Geelong stands apart as it has had injuries and managed through them.

Don't you think after you'd won 8 straight you would have stopped surprising teams. Or 10 or 12 straight maybe. Stupid comment

mentioned earlier in the thread that other teams closed up on us after the mid season break, on strategy and fitness.

we got off to a flyer based on that surprise.

we wont get off to a flyer in 2010 based on strategy.

Sydney's best midfield..

Kirk, Bolton, Goodes, Mcveigh, O'keefe + Jack as tagger.

Not bad at all. Very inexperienced depth after that though other than ablett.

The Bulldogs midfield can mix it up with anyone I reckon. This season they added the hardness that perhaps they'd been lacking a little in previous seasons, and Ward is going to be a star.

I'm pretty interested in how Hawthorn's will be next season. With Gibson added and Shoenmaker's a year older we might see Hodge back to the midfield full time, and then we add Burgoyne. In effect we add two top line players into what was already a strong midfield. Of course we may still need Hodge back, and Burgoyne might not be fit, so who knows how we'll actually line up, but the potential is incredible.

Lovett hahaha I still cant believe we scored LOVETT!!! THAT IS SO FN GOOD!!

Exactly what we needed the last piece of the perfect puzzle BABY!!

Lovett in his prime OMG this is going to be fun to watch.:thumbsu:

Pendles
Swan
Didak(50-50)*
Davis*
Beams
Sidebottom
Thomas*
O bree

Johnson (tagger)
Wellingham*

i dont think thats a horrible midfield at all
It's not bad, but also it's not worthy of top 5. Swap 'em and put in Crows instead.

Bold= Not so good
*= not midfielder

1.Geelong (not as good in '07)
2 Saints (In their prime)
3.Blues (1 or 2 more years)
4.Dogs (could do better)
5.Hawks (below their own standards)
6.Crows (will only get better)
7.Magpies (young & restless)
