My take:

Mayes - not a steal, went where he seemed to be rated. Good attributes to add to the club, some of which we are probably lacking at the moment.

Paparone - perhaps a bit of a needs pick. Some strengths but some areas of concern. Seems the type of player that some might rate highly but others might only consider worthy of a rookie spot.
Probably the most questionable pick, but also the hardest to predict.

Close - seems a good gamble for someone at this pick. Some enticing qualities and fits a need perfectly.

All three with great endurance - coincidence?

Solid post Grim. Great summary.

The closeness to family would be a big thing. When Mayes went to school in Adelaide, he didn't board. The whole family moved. His two older brothers went to school in the country and had graduated so at that stage it was Sam and his twin sister.
I and I am sure everybody else on here is more then happy to have opposition supporters come on here and add their own individual input to the thread topic but so far you have come on here and waffled on about nothing but the fact that Sam Mayes is likely to get homesick and he is a homesick kind of guy. We all now understand your view on Sam. Please either add something new or move along.

Interesting, by my recollection we now have three players that have a twin.... Bewick, Polec and now Mayes.

Some interesting selections. Of course we will not know anything further for up to another 3 years or so.

The thing that pleases me most about this draft, is not so much the guys we selected, but the fact that we have a plan. We got the players we wanted. The players that fit into the plan that the Lions staff have devised. This plan no doubt takes into account future drafts, future academy intakes, proposed changes to interchange rules, game plans and future list movement.

I guess we just need to wait and see if the plan is a good one or not!

Sam played at my footy club which was the same country club as Lewis Johnson...everyone up here talks about how much more mature and lvl headed Sam is. And that he will have a great attitude towards his career. He has work really hard to get to the AFL by playing against men since the age of 14 as a skinny kid...then going on to move to Adelaide away from friends to better himself. Like redden he won't be the type to cry homesickness...for he has shown to have the mentality to tough things out and get on with the job. He will be fine...plus SA people love qld

I think we're showing Melbourne how to tank correctly.

Ladies, settle down. We were always going to load up on some key position players last night. Talls are always a risk. It was a risk we needed to take for 2015 onwards. I am assuming MP and Close will be groomed at both ends of the ground.

Mayes seems like a bit of rolls royce. Can't wait to see him in action with Docherty in 2013.

I couldn't agree more..... There was no guaranteed star kpp in this draft. So we went for two who are playing great football in the national series, both have elite fitness, good height, and have potentially more growth potential than a player like Shaw for instance. Good drafting.

One very interesting note is that we were willing to give up the picks that got us Mayes and Marco p. for Hogan.

If you read my first post, I'm a big wrap for his talent and didn't mention his homesickness at all.

I'm just giving you what I thought could be interesting facts.

Seems like a nice down to earth kid. Also sounds like he's from New Zealand strangely......bro

Mayes looks like Andrew Gaff to me.
Polec and Mayes on either side of the wing, blasting away from opposition. delicious :p

Kerr-
We’ve recruited with a view that we need to develop our next generation forward line - that’s where the overriding philosophy came from,” Kerr said.

“Sam Mayes is a forward who is developing into a midfielder, so we expect him to go into the midfield. He’s a very clever player.”

“Paprone will be a really good connector for us into the back line or the forward line… and Michael Close is a centre half forward who is really competitive.”

“We came tonight with those three boys in our minds as who we wanted to pick - we obviously had backups but those were the three that we wanted to walk away with.”

Some things i found interesting from that little quote. I noted earlier in the thread whilst at the draft that we wasted no time in reading out those names, especially picks 23 and 32. We didn't talk or look like we were deciding between a couple of players, we read them straight out, so it doesn't surprise me to read that we had those guys picked out.

Interesting to see us say Paparone could be back or forward, and we clearly see Close as our next CHF with his huge tank. I really like the pick of Close, he strikes me as the kind of player we sneak under the radar, missing a lot of the year with injury and being out of the spot light.

I little dis-heartening at the amount of people who got hounded last night for having an opinion on the draft.

People are allowed to write what they think, Whether it's about Mayes' face or the odd selections of Paparone/Close.

So many bullies in here that don't even know it.

For the record, I did jump the gun last night on the whole '3 forwards' after realizing we will probably get Conway next year and I am pleased with Mayes/Paparone but Close is a project and will take time before you can really assess him.

has the world gone crazy?

surely anyone from south australia wouldnt get home sickness

maybe thats why brisbane have drafted so many of them

People have jumped the gun in assuming where these players are going to play both positional wise and living. Paparone may have been drafted because has extra versatility as he can play CHB and CHF. Close he can play FWD and RUCK and back(?). Mayes has a great kick and is eventually viewed as a midfielder. The only true forwards you can drafted without a backup positions are the Browns, Pattons and Franklins and they don't always work out... Mitch Thorp. I think our recruiters have done well because if these boys don't make it as a FWD they have another position to fall back on.

So, did I miss anything in here lastnight?
Scanned through some pages and looked like a big family re-union. A lot of fly-by nighters, old friends we haven't seen for ages, plenty who I've never seen and a good spattering of rookies. And wouldn't you know, all a ****ing expert. One even had the likes of Merret and Longer pegged as spuds, so clearly an expert. I hope the cleaners are coming in this morning to clean up the bile, blood and spew.
I can only assume all the older members who we never see here frequent the main board or bay, reminds me why I don't bother venturing out there.

Anywho, Kerr has given clear reasoning for drafting who they did and whilst not everyone will be excited about all our pick ups, we can just hope they all develop well for us.
For those who think they are bullied, I would say that if you have an opinion in the minority it will always seem that you are under attack because there are simply more who disagree. Either you can make a good, sensible argument to back your opinion or you can't. And if you are wrong well so be it, we've all been wrong at times. Glad most of the tools lastnight are not regulars here.

The thought of Mayes, Rich and Polec getting the ball forward of centre is very exciting. One of the biggest deficiencies in our list in those "wilderness years" after the three peat was a lack of mids who kick goals or effectively spot up a forward 50 target. We've got some elite finishers now.
