As always, a great look into the mind of Kerr and the on goings of the club during trade week. Good to see not one reference to Post, looks like another UTG special.

Hrmmm...:

With respect to Luke Delaney, our Pro Scout had identified Luke as a developing key defender who could hold down a key post for several years.

This article answers pretty much every question and criticism from the Brisbane board from the last few months.
Now I understand the delay. It would have taken Rob a week to read ~4300 posts. :D

Great read. Maybe in a few years we can grab Hogan for peanuts, knowing Nutty Neeld it'll probably just involve what we got for Stefan. Great Job Rob Kerr! My respect for that man just keeps increasing, so glad he's apart of the Lions. Also, he's growing a moustache. awesome.

Can't wait for the draft.

that was an awesome read and it makes me hate gold coast even more, only if they had bid for viney we more than likely would have been able to land hogan, thanks for bringing such a lovely team into the competition AFL

With respect to the key forward, it is a fact that quality key forwards are rare beasts. As one of our recruiters outlined, there are about 12 genuinely good ones in the world, and the rest are either hopefuls developing or are not going to make it. To test this theory, supporters should list the number of quality key forwards in the AFL
Wonder if Ronaldo's name was thrown as the 12 best forwards in the world. What would it cost us to make an offer? John what do you reckon, or have you your eye on another?:D

Hrmmm...:

Sneaky...

I like the explanation of Martin, and it's good to know he was someone we identified before the trade period, he wasn't a last minute panic option like some thought he was. He was brought in for his specific skill set in relation to our list. Whilst Longer is that ruck/forward we need, lets not forget he is a 2nd year ruckman. Sounds like the club is not going to rush him to senior footy, and wanted a better back up option. I posted awhile ago that with Huddo gone, Longer will take the #1 ruck position in the 2nds, this step up alone will be a great test for him and will aid his development. He doesn't need to be pushed into senior footy, he is still learning.

Don't forget the Dees - using picks they only had because they tanked.

What do people think Kerr meant by this?

It appears to me that unlike 2010 and 2011, there is a greater divergence of opinion amongst clubs as to the relative merits of this draft cohort. Some of the selections that have been speculated in the media and online also support that view. Therefore, it may well be that on November 22 there are a few surprises.

Just that there will be some surprise selections?

It's not beyond the realms of possibility that if the AFL comes down hard on Melbourne, they may lose their ability to secure Hogan as he still isn't on their senior list. It wouldn't be a case of organising another trade though, rather he would enter the 2013 draft as he would have if there were no mini-draft. It's an unlikely scenario, and one that I imagine the AFLPA wouldn't be rapt about, but I wouldn't rule it out.

Brilliant write-up though. Loved every bit of it.

Just what it says - there's more disagreement than usual about players among clubs, media and 'online' (sounds like he's been reading BigFooty again).

would be a dream come true if that were to happen, we probably still won't get him but it avoids melbourne ruining another future star

The Brisbane Football Department employees should all be told they aren't needed. The Brisbane coaching panel should be told I pack up their desks. Rob Kerr should take their jobs.

While the above summary appears quite orderly, I can assure supporters it is not always the way the trade period works. The best demonstration of that is the final Thursday when the Stefan Martin deal still had to be concluded, Jesse White was being considered and we were scrambling to see if Kurt Tippett had in fact become an option for us again. I was involved in 75 phone calls that day with player agents, the AFL and Brisbane officials. It was reminiscent of the Saturday in 2011 when the Mitch Clark trade occurred, and it was the type of day that that can only occur in the trade period.
75 phone calls. Damn.

Very, very interesting that if the Demons hadn't done their sneaky little deal over Viney, Hogan would very likely have wound up at Brisbane.

We might remember that in five years time.

"The only other options that we considered at different times were a swap of picks with GWS who were interested in our Pick 8. Had we been able to get an agreement on a deal that involved the GWS’ Picks 12 and 14 coming to us for Pick 8 and 24, we would have seriously considered it but GWS didn’t want to give up those positions. Similarly, the options put to us by GWS were not attractive enough for us to forfeit Pick 8 "

I found this interesting too, wonder if we were offerred jed anderson along with a lower pick for 8

Melbourne would have wanted him just as bad, 3 and 13 would have been the cost, and they were happy to do that. It's a shame, to think if they had to use 4 on viney, Hogan might be in blue maroon and gold.

It's an interesting read as it also explains why Melbourne effectively paid more for pick 2 than GC did for pick 1 - basically the Doggies were interested in Martin but wouldn't trump pick 2 by giving up two first rounders, whereas we were willing to trump pick 3 on its own with 8 + 24, forcing Melbourne to give up 3 + 13.
