Okay. You're old fashioned.

Based on the fact Ellis played for Box Hill last week while Savage and Smith played in Perth suggests Clarko isn't thinking this.

By the way, pre Puopolo, Savage, Smith, etc, we were struggling to make the finals in 2010. Injecting the new blood last year with minimal input from the likes of Ellis, Young and Osborne got us into the top 4. Am I missing something here?

We'll agree to disagree, wait until about rd 3/4 and we can reassess the line-up. Some of the players sent west were still auditioning for spots.

His issue is getting on the park, not his contribution once he is on it.

Agree.

--Also I haven't seen many people acknowledge J Lewis' comments as per certain selfish players. I can name them for you: Savage, Bruest, Poupolo...
perhaps another reason I turn to mature heads

There's something I see in Savage (can't really put my finger on it yet) that is telling me that he'll be elite. He's certainly on the upward tragectory towards this and as such I think he should be playing ahead of Youngy, who as much as I love, doesn't have the same upside.

WOW, this is a contender for the worst post for the year, and we still have 9 months left..........its going to take a lot for this one to be beat.

With the Boxhill team released it gives us an idea of the side next week. The following shows 32 players of with AFL experience that could play a role if required this year.

FB: Gibson – Bohmann – Guerra
HB: Burgoyne – Schoe – Birch
C: Smith – Mitch – Savage
HF: Guston – Franklin – Bateman
FF: Rioli – Hale – Pop
R: Brock Mac – Lewis – Hodge
I/C: Sewell – Shiels – Suckling – Whitecross

Emerg: Bruest – Young – Osborne – Stratton
Boxhill: Bruce – Roughhead – Ellis – Cheney – Murphy
Injured: Gilham – Bailey

Strong depth :thumbsu:

My brain just melted. Puopolo in particular has put his body on the line for his team mates and shared the ball around instead of taking difficult shots, time and time again.

How on Earth are Savage and Breust selfish?

Pretty good crack at the team, but I would try slot Stratton in to help deal with Cloke and Dawes. Possibly at the expense of Savage but it's hard to drop anyone from that lineup. :thumbsu:

Agree, anyone playing for BHH his week will not play round one.
I don't see Murphy, Bruce or Cheney near our best 22 so am pretty happy with that.
I think Ossie will miss Rnd 1, not sure who else though.
Best depth since 1985.

We all know we have a great team but I'm not sure we will win against Pies only 15 on the field. Not sure about Lewis at FF either...

Cyril?

Hard to imagine us not picking Breust. He is quick, clever, stronger than last year and good for 2 goals a game.

Also hard to imagine Stratts not playing but he hasn't shown any form so far and players might need to this year to get a run.

Young and Ozzy are just stiff.

Box Hill shows us Bruce, Murphy and Ellis aren't in our best 26 (28 if you include Bailey and Roughy) which is what many have been saying for a while.

I think you will find us playing some of our best players as subs this year given that there are no byes. If a Hodge or a Mitch played only a quarter every 6-8 weeks, they would stay reasonably fresh.

Don't fully agree. Some guys who had niggles last week, will be in the mix.

King Hodge, you mixed up full forward and Ruck/Ruck rover and rover - forgot them I would say.

Broc needs to do his best to compete hard and nullify the opposing Ruck (that is, a defensive role/mindset). Hale seems to be relishing both the Ruck and full forward roles. I remember when he was drafted, he said he'd like to do both so he has a thirst for hard work.

He seems to be finding his best form which is great.

Ossie is such a team first hard nut, but may miss vs Pies.

If Bowman plays, he will be playing his first senior gig in front of about 85k. The pressure will be huge. I think he can do the job on Dawes.

I've been pleased with Shoe in the pre season. He has been more aggressive, confident and his decision making is a bit sharper. His disposal has been elite. For mine, a lock in.

Roughead is playing for Box Hill on Sunday (confirmed) so won't front up in Round 1, considering it is five days later on Friday.

Full Back: Gibson Bowmann Suckling
Half Back: Birchall Shoe Stratton
Centre: Savage Mitchell Lewis
Half Fwd: Smith Franklin Rioli
FFwd: Bruest Gunston Puopolo

Rucks: Hale, Hodge, Sewell,

I/C: Broc, Shiels, Burgoyne, Guerra (Bateman had an excellent pre season and is very fit, so he may push someone out and take on a tagging role - maybe Shiels is not 100%??).

Gunston will move to the flank or pocket when Hale is rested at Full Forward.

(They say you measure how good a side is via the talent on the interchange bench = this bench is pretty talented).

I would hope Gibson helps Bowmann out in the last line of defense. It's tough leaving out a number of experienced players...

So hard to pick a team now as our depth is great and i feel guilty leaving any out.
Until Roughy is ready to go, i'd be happy with this team.

B - GUERRA BOUMANN GIBSON

HB - BIRCHALL SHOENMAKERS STRATTON

C - LEWIS MITCHELL SMITH

HF - BURGOYNE FRANKLIN GUNSTON

F - RIOLI HALE BREUST

R - MCCAULEY , SEWELL , HODGE

INT - SUCKLING , SHIELS , PUOPOLO , SAVAGE

EMERG - OSBOURNE , WHITE X , MURPHY , CHENEY

INJURED - ROUGHEAD , GILHAM , BAILEY

outskirts and in the mix - ELLIS , YOUNG , BATEMAN , LOWDEN

I reckon we should go with Gunston from the outset, give him game time and get him used to the times, especially with some big games first up. The experience will be invaluable.

When roughy is ready to go, it depends on where they want him ? forward or back ?
I'm pretty confident the club will not play him in the ruck, but he is auto selection.

Gilly still has a way to go before he even gets a run at Boxhill, he then has to show some solid form before knocking anyone back out of the team. I hope he can regain his form and be the player he was.

Bailey will also need a couple with boxhill once passed fit to find touch again but he should regain his spot. Funnier things have happened though ( renouf / taylor ).

All in all i think we have a squad that can go all the way if they are focussed and hard.

All right I'll admit something. At the start of 2011 i wanted to see Young, Ellis and Bruce ahead of Savage, Smith and Breust etc. But after seeing Smith, Savage, Breust last year really have big impacts for us and 'rejuvenate' our team I wouldn't be playing Bruce, Ellis or Young at all. They are depth players going into this year, which just shows where our list is at right now. :thumbsu:

No Young? He is a chance to play IMO. He has played 4 Nab Cup matches and played well too. :)

Lol, you said two pages earlier that you wouldn't play Young at all, now you are confused when no one picks him?

based on yesterday, i think this is our best 22

B: Gibson Gilham Guerra

HB: Birchall Boumann Stratton

C: Lewis Mitchell Savage

HF: Rioli Franklin Burgoyne

FF: Gunston Roughead Puopolo

R: Bailey Hodge Sewell

INT: Smith (sub) Suckling Shiels Whitecross

Just want to add my opinion on our best 22 with Bailey & Hodge too come back soon and an abundance of players playing well for Box Hill.

FB: Guerra, Gilham, Gibson
HB: Birchall, Shoenmakers, Suckling
C: Young, Hodge, Smith
HF: Burgoyne, Franklin, Lewis
FF: Rioli, Roughead, Gunston
Foll: Hale, Mitchell, Sewell
Int: Shiels, Stratton, Breust (Sub): Savage
Emergencies: Bailey, Whitecross, Puopolo

Savage SUB? What is this. Best 21.
Bailey Emergency! Ya gotta be kidding me.
Whitecross? Bloke was on target for AA squad a few weeks back.
Puopolo? Can't have a side without him.

I can't believe you have the likes of err.....oh.

Da-amn our "top-25" is good.

I'll have a go (purely based on the form I've seen so far from the players)

FB: Guerra, Gibson, Stratton
HB: Birchall, Schoenmakers, Suckling
C: Savage, Lewis, Smith
HF: Whitecross, Franklin, Burgoyne
FF: Rioli, Roughead, Breust
Foll: Bailey, Mitchell, Sewell
Int: Shiels, Hodge, Hale, (Sub): Gilham
Emergencies: McCauley, Puopolo, Osborne

It was actually really difficult. In fact I got the feeling while doing it, that we actually have too many defenders (wtf?).

I had to put Gilham as sub simply because there was no room for anyone else in the backline! Seeing as he hasn't played too much this year I figured I'd give him a few more rounds to fully prove that he's in the best 21. Though based on his last couple of games, I think he's a shoe-in. No idea who's place he'd take though when subbed on.

Still, our FB line looks too small, but I can't bring myself to sacrifice any of Gibson, Guerra or Stratton as they're all playing great this year.

Puopolo is a gun, but left him out based on form this year. He'll come good though.

Osborne will disappear from the Emg list as time goes on. Left him there as this team was based on our best players from the first 8 rounds.

Hodge on the bench as he'd be rotating around several positions as a utility Back, Centre, Forward.

Fitting Bailey, Roughead and Hale into the team was a challenge. I do think Roughead brings so much to the team in a Follower roll. Perhaps Bailey or Hale need to go out. I'd probably keep Hale in if I had to chose between the two.
