A player has served ten or more seasons of AFL football at one club, has already come out of contract once in the period after serving his first eight or more seasons at his club, and is now out of contract. (Unrestricted free agent)
The player is eligible to field offers from all rival clubs.
If he wishes to change clubs, the player must decide on the best offer of his choice from one rival club.
His club does NOT have the right to match the presented offer, and the player can move AUTOMATICALLY to the new club of his choice.

After 14 seasons Paul Chapman is an UNRESTRICTED free agent.

As Geelong has also delisted him, he is a delisted free agent and therefore can go to whatever club he wants regardless of the amount of money the clubs are offering.

If he wants to come to Carlton, there is nothing stopping him from coming to Carlton. GWS might come along and say hey... we will give you 400k, but we are only offering a 1 year contract with an option of a second based on performance and Carlton come along and offer him 2 years straight for 250k with a coaching role when he finally does pull the pin and we also tell him that he can do his coaching certificates while he is at the club and we will pick up the tab for it. While it sounds like GWS are offering a lot, they are only offering him 1 year. If he wants 2 years and he wants to go into coaching, Carltons offer is much more appealing to him long term.

Does this mean we need to do a deal with hawthorn if we want Mitch thorp?

No way Chapman will be playing next year his body is shot!

He looked pretty good against Port.
Give him a late start to preseason training - gives his body a good 3 months off.
Risk is pretty low with him, but there's no reason why he couldn't be 20+ goal kicker for us in 2014.

Correct me if I'm wrong boys, but isn't Chapman delisted? Plus he was an unrestricted FA prior so we don't have to give Cats anything. He can walk to us for nothing - just gotta get him to decide to come here.

Laidler on the other hand is still technically on our list until next lodgement (Oct 31 I believe) so can be traded.

He's a free agent.
We don't have to trade, and Geelong have absolutely nothing to do with where he goes.

Oh, sorry. I forgot to add this to the post.

Chapman is a rich man's Duigan. Would prefer we have one of the two or none.
Would rather put these types on our rookie list for safe keeping like Ben Hudson. Don't see the need to use a list spot on a player who isn't in demand. GWS is the only club who would be likely to take them to get senior bodies in. We're not exactly short on small and medium forwards.

Agree - but reckon Chappy should be picked up prior so we can play him off the main list from R1. If we get Pods on the other hand, I'd much rather rookie him and play him from there.

We've essentially wiped the slate clean with our rookie list, so the club might already be looking at this option.

I love the idea of crouch but i'm starting to be concerned that he was a star player in a ordinary team. the rebels didn't set the world on fire this year and he is definitely the pick out of the team. I'm just wondering whether his 40 possession games came from the mentality that his teammates fed him the ball a lot because he was the only one in the team who could use it.

although he did gather 29 possessions and 1 goal for vic country, when playing vfl picked up 23 disposals.
So i'm probably talking crap.

You do have a decent argument, which may have been true to a certain extent. From what i know about him though, is that he is very good at earning his own ball so its maybe a little from column A and a little from column B.
