I thought CC was guaranteed right to purchase a GF ticket if we get in. Not a 'Ballot' situation, how can a ballot be guaranteed access to buy a ticket. It would be ludicrous if we had more CC and Club 17 members than the 15K allocation.

Guaranteed access means just that. You have guaranteed access to purchase a GF ticket if the Club is participating.

If it was guaranteed GF ticket, it would say so on the website.

It's definitely a ballot.
I am a CC Member and received all the ballot details in 2011 after we beat Essendon in the Elim Final.

Had we made it to the Prelim, I had to register on the Ticketek website and pay a $5 fee.

I am sure this can be confirmed by other CC & Club17 Members.

At some stage the Club will most likely cap CC Members. I am pretty sure Club17 is capped from memory.

I am CC and remember getting the ballot request but i thought that was more to make sure all the CC members who wanted to purchase a ticket were registering their interest to purchase the ticket.

The site says
  • Guaranteed access to purchase Grand Finals ticket if Carlton is participating.
To me that wording is you have the right to purchase the ticket, ie the purchasing part was the important part so people didn't read it as the membership includes a free GF ticket.

I'll call the club during the week to confirm if i cannot find that email from 2011. Doesn't impact my decision on CC just doesn't seem right to say it is guaranteed but through a ballot. Also just like the pies members started upgrading to their CC equivalent to get GF tickets in 2010. Would be highly annoying missing out because people upgraded last minute to get a ticket through a ballot.

The key word is "access".

When you find out, please let us know.

I just looked for the email but must have deleted it.

Ok just found this from the Official Club account from last year .........

Hope this clears it up.

As a Captains Club member you have guaranteed access to purchase a Grand Final ticket if Carlton is participating. The reason we use the terms 'access to purchase' is because it's up to the member to register to secure the Grand Final ticket.

If you were a member in 2011, you may have recieved a letter from Greg Swann in early September explaining the Grand Final registration process. If Carlton is successful in the Finals Series again this year, the same communication will be sent out to you in September.

To sum it up, as a Captains Club member you do have a guaranteed Grand Final ticket as long as you register for your ticket.

(3 + 8 - 4) + 3 + 7 = 17

Teams tracking ahead of schedule to break last years membership numbers:
Adelaide, Collingwood, Essendon, Fremantle, GWS, Sydney and West Coast. (n.b. Essendon's numbers have slowed down in recent weeks)

Teams running on track to break last years membership numbers:
Carlton, Geelong, Suns, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide and Richmond

Teams that look highly unlikely to reach last years mark:
Brisbane, Melbourne, North Melbourne, St.Kilda, Western Bulldogs

Only one of that last group made the finals last year & there is every possibility none will make it this year, which is clearly having an impact on their membership numbers. It would have to be a concern for the AFL that none of these teams have cashed in on the time they have respectively spent near the top end of the ladder over the last decade or two.

They seem to be making calls to those who haven't renewed yet this year judging from a Mitch Robinson tweet.

:D

Thats a disappointing figure, yeah i know Swann said we're up on last year etc on SEN this morning, But our club has finished 2nd in attendances 4 of the last 6 seasons, we have a massive following and yet are still miles behind Collingwood, Hawthorn, Essendon and now Richmond......we simply cant convert match day walk ups to members, or we have a piss weak supporter base who just don't support the club.

We were told at the family day 50k is the target, we were told 50k is NEEDED for bargaining power for an MCG home ground switch.:(

We'll finish at around 45-46k......Just not good enough in my opinion.

Absolutely and given that GWS and GC are the AFL darlings for now and for some time to come, there will be little favouritism coming those sides' way.

Brisbane in particular must be a real worry. Their membership may be somewhere not much more than half it was 10 years ago.

50K is still achievable but it seems that a lot will need to go right for that number to be achieved as we're only 2K in front of where we were this time last year. That alone would net us 48K

The numbers really took a dip when we started losing in May and almost flat-lined for the May/June period. That hurt us.

A nab cup premiership and a good start to the season could just tip us over, here's hoping

So... I'd like to purchase a Captains Club membership with a reserved seat. I went into the club last week to do just that. Problem is, it turns out that I would prefer a level 1 seat at the 'G and a level 3 (really level 2 but 4 year waiting list) at Etihad... who knew. And you can't do that... even if you're prepared to pay the higher level 2-3 cost. So, now I'm torn. I want a membership, but maybe I'd be better off with and AFL with club support... damn it... I simply do not know which way to go. (And I don't know that the girl at headquarters particularly cared for my dilemma... I know... first world).

I've not been a member before, but I'm a passionate supporter of the Blues and have been for 35 years. I want to dedicate my weekends to more than shouting at the tv...

So... Captain's Club or AFL with Club Support?

Will you go watch other teams or just Carlton? If only Carlton, the main difference is that with Captains club you get guaranteed reserved seats to all Carlton home games (and away if you so choose), and access to every final we participate in.

AFL membership you will have to start as a silver member, I can't remember off the top of my head what the restrictions are but I'm pretty sure it'd have to do with final tickets allocation. On top of that all the 'big' games you will certainly have to reserve a seat.

It's a shame the Carlton rep on the phone couldn't sway you to sign up for Captains club seeing as it's her job and you're already interested. It seems like they've come a long way recently but still have a bit of work to do.

Thanks for your reply! Actually, I was at the club and they didn't put a lot of effort into convincing me at all (and after I spent 20 minutes attempting to choose seats. And perhaps it would help if the salesperson had actually been to both Etihad and the 'G (embarrassingly I've never been to see the Blues (or anyone else) at Etihad). And maybe if they actually barracked for Carlton it would help... but I digress).

I'd like to go to other games but the truth is I've only just convinced myself (and my very understanding but Essendon supporting wife) that I can afford to commit to all of Carlton's games (17). I'd like a dedicated seat because then I could arrive close to the start of the game (two young daughters and my wife would like me to not spend 6 hours at the football). The thing I like about AFL memberships is that I can get seating on centre wing... really want central seats... my eye sight's simply not good enough to sit at an end.

Seriously though, with all this complaining, you'd think I barracked for Collingwood. But then again, I can spell; and construct whole sentences.

You sure can ODNB.

Do what's in your best interest mate and if you have a few lazy dollars then buy a CFC raffle ticket or go to a function.

When it comes down to seating you have to get what suits you best. No one can hold it against you.

Nothing better than being at the game though. Just not the same on telly.

If you're only getting a seat for yourself surely they could find you a seat where you want it? I know they have a waiting list for level 2, but this is usually for people wanting to sit with a group of friends. I was led to believe there are isolated seats all over the place.

I would try the club again and explain your situation... see if they can help, if not go for the AFL membership. Best of luck!

Thanks again BLue_Bloys. I will try again and see how I go.
